A sequel of sorts to Santa baby...

Drawn by RileyAV

The young man glanced up from his magazine when he sensed someone standing in front of him. He didn't even hesitate to say, "Oh, that looks nice on you, Adagio. What's the occasion?" He had noticed her slight frown from the beginning, but tried to ignore it. However, either what he said, or the way he said it, prompted the girl to frown even more intensely.

"It's New Year's Eve," she said finally, after a minute of silent staring.

"Hmm. So it is," he replied, taking note of the time from the digital watch on his wrist. "You going out with the girls tonight? Even though it's been unseasonably warm I'd take more than just that sweater out, tonight."

She glanced down at herself for a moment when he told her that, but her attention was actually toward her necklace. Specifically she touched her fingers against the bright red gem hanging between her exposed collar bones. The moment Adagio spotted the gem at the mall a couple of weeks ago, she seemed quite taken with it, so he decided to buy it for her, as well as two more for Sonata and Aria, for Christmas. They each displayed a different form of happiness at the gesture, which was surprising since usually girls weren't fond of getting the exact same present as another.

While Aria played coy and Sonata was more openly happy, Adagio's reaction was a bit more complicated, much so in the past week. "Why aren't you adoring me?" She asked. "You offer compliments and buy things when I don't even ask you to, yet you pay just as much attention to the other girls. Maybe even more. What gives?"

"Can't say I've been keeping tabs, though the fact that you've been...I'm honestly confused whether you're jealous or disappointed, or...?" The young man closed his magazine and placed it onto the coffee table in front of him. "Don't you feed off of adoration? I think?"

"There's just...something odd about you," was all she said, cryptically, before stomping off toward the stairs.

"Sorry that your wiles aren't working on me," he called out to her before she disappeared on the second floor. "If it's any consolation I have no regrets about taking you, Sonata or Aria in. Frustrations, yes, but zero regrets." Though he didn't hear a response, a slight creak gave him an indication that Adagio was still standing on the stairs. "Hey, we still have a couple of hours before midnight, so let me know if you change your mind about not going out. Though fireworks are better live all of us can just watch the show on T.V. You can even wear that and not worry about the cold."

"So that's what your plan was, hmmm?" Adagio called back from the top of the stairs. "How cunning of you~" She let loose her usual laugh which echoed through the house.

The young man jumped to his feet, however the door slammed shut before he could finish defending himself. "Huh? No, that's not what I...meant..." All he could do was scratch his head and sigh.
