Day 24...
Tis for season, for all things jolly, and for everyone to hang up decorations, mistletoe and holly. December 24th has come once more, and now is the time that we all adore. The time of opening presents, goodwill and cheer. And one more story before the day is here.
That's why this story, that you all should applaud, is Hearth Warming Trappings, written by Georg.
Many people make these Santa stories each year, and each of them loaded with their own sense of cheer. This story, however, is a special one tonight, for it highlights the ultimate Alicorn Princess, Twilight. In an attempt to prove that Santa Hooves isn't real, she sets up some precautions that do feel surreal. These work off in the end, and Santa is known, but the talk they have on that night is what's really shown.
Twilight starts feeling victorious, and she should for doing so. However, there's so much more that she doesn't know. Claiming him for being a burglar of all things, Santa tells her about the holidays, and the happiness it brings. He also proves his point by telling the nice and naughty, as well as the reasons they were sporty and unsporty. She doesn't buy him at first, but she eventually does, when he revealed the presents she sent off to the ponies she loves.
Upon her apologies, she lets him out alright, and he, in return, lets her guide the sleigh tonight. Together, the two of them bring Christmas on time, and Twilight of the two of them feels the most sublime. But this great victory comes with a cost. Upon tomorrow, the memories will be lost. She wakes up the next day, with all of her work unravelled, and no-one believes her, or the path that she travelled.
The reason she forgot could be learned in a jiff. Santa wants everyone to still think it's a myth. For if they believe in him, then the magic dies out. And that is the thing Hearth's Warming cannot go without. But he does return to Twilight when he's late another year, and the two of them fly off together, spreading lots of cheer.
What makes this story work, is how it's presented. Santa-is-real stories are widely respected. She believes in him now, and cannot keep it down herself. But has to by his wishes so that the feeling stays around. But the two of them meeting again is a nice reunion, showing he does come to ponies who believe him. The myth still runs around in our world today, but Santa Hooves is real, and his legend will stay.
The talk between the two immortals brings new life to generosity. For everyone will pass on eventually. And while you don't necessarily have to give someone anything, giving them something anyway is the most nice thing. We can all do with giving this holiday season, so give your loved ones a gift this week, no matter the reason.
Happiness comes from the presents we bring, not just from the joys of jokes or from sing. So while I'm on the subject of glee and cheer...
