A recent commission. · 12:54am Dec 24th, 2015
So, this was a recent commission for SPark.
I was asked to draw a picture of a changeling with a cutie mark fighting Chrysalis. I decided to have fun with this by doing some nice, dynamic poses and trying to make Chrysalis look menacing and feral. Animalistic. I was asked to include herr throne, and since there is no real solid canon design for it, I decided to make it look as wrong and grotesque as possible.
The image, lineart, and process images are below the break. If you don't like images relating (loosely) to trypophobia, or if you hate mud dauber nests, you might want to skip this one.
The throne was inspired by H.R. Giger of Alien fame. The conical columns on the front are inspired by two things; cream horn pastries...
And mud dauber nests;
The holes near the top were inspired by trypophobia.
When you see those holes, and the holes in the cones, think of what sort of things might be in that throne...
Here is the lineart;
notice the lack of wings. I initially forgot to add them. I didn't add them until after the image was colored. They were drawn on a separate piece of paper and scanned, then added in photoshop.
Anyhow, this was the first sketch I did;
Just to show the client the basic pose/composition.
This was followed up with a more detailed sketch, primarily to express Chrysalis' face.
This was an in-progress image of the final drawing.
The primary detail of the back of the throne was influenced heavily by a specific Giger painting. The one on the cover of Biomechanics (which, unfortunately, I do not know the name of).
The final drawing was done on a piece of 16 x 20 inch illustration board, with Copic multiliners. It was colored in Photoshop.
I'm pretty satisfied with how this turned out. So, for those who haven't seen this image, there you have it!
