When the Griffins Broke Free · 12:34am Aug 18th, 2012
This is from a story some time in the future for Britannia: the Unofficial Biography but I just had to get it down somewhere.
"It was just before dawn
One miserable morning in black 'fifty-four.
When the Forward-Commander was told to sit tight
When he asked that his troops be withdrawn.
And the generals gave thanks
As the other ranks held back
The enemy flanks for a while.
And the Hoovegorod bridge-head.
Was held for the price.
Of a few-score of ordinary lives.
And dear Princess Celestia
Sent Father a note
When she heard that Mother was gone,
It was, I recall
In the form of a scroll
With gold-leaf and all.
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away.
And my eyes still grow damp to remember
Her Majesty signed
In her own rubber stamp.
It was dark all around.
There was frost in the ground
When the griffins broke free.
And no-pony survived
From the Royal Cavaliers Company D,
They were all left behind
Most of them dead
The rest of them dying.
And that's how the High Command
Took my Mommy from me."
...Extract taken from Pink Philharmonic's controversial 984 AC protest album Whatever Happened to All the Post War Dreams?
It's wholeheartedly ripped off from this Roger Walters song:
but it has always had such a haunting feeling for me that it would be remiss of me not to make use of it at some point in my soldiers biography fanfic. I'm not sure whether to recommend the whole album, it's never been one of the most well-received Pink Floyd albums and has some very dark and heavy subject matter with a lot of reference to the political scene of the 1980's. Bit much for a site based on My Little Pony but if you want to hit it up feel free.
