Episode Review: Scaremaster · 4:52pm Dec 7th, 2015

Boo! Spoilers. You're scared of them.

In this episode, we get a return of Nightmare Night, and Fluttershy doesn't want anything to do with it, so she's made various preparations. But Angel Bunny spoils them by eating all his carrots ahead of time (seriously, what else did you think happened to them?), thus forcing Fluttershy to go out on Nightmare Night.

Granny Smith apparently gets hit by a bad case of insensitivity, scaring Fluttershy and not letting her have any hay. Mac was mean too, not interjecting, but then again, this is Granny we're talking about here. Fluttershy keeps looking for food for angel, and she keeps getting scared. Spike convinces her to try joining the others, and so they all give this a shot until it becomes clear that Fluttershy's caution is dampening everyone else's fun. Twilight has the brilliant idea to let Fluttershy be the scarer so she can't be scared, and she agrees, asking for just 1 hour to set everything up in her cottage.

Fluttershy does the atmosphere right, making everything dark and foggy, but the fears she uses are deeply personal ones, and not Halloween-type jumpscares -- including cut-outs of Sailor Moon, Utena, Ranma, Rei, and Bulma ponified as extra guests. Fresh off her failure, Fluttershy gives up and sends her friends to enjoy the rest of the night. But Angel has other ideas. Oh, what ideas he has!

Springing these surprises on her friends, Fluttershy discovers that she can scare others effectively, but she also discovers that she doesn't enjoy seeing her friends scared, even if she knows they're not in genuine danger. She decides to assert that Nightmare Night is not for her, despite her friends' invitation to be the scarer every year. It's just not her cup of tea.

It was nice to see all the costumes, even though some of the background ponies reused some of theirs. The Mane6 costumes were fresh, and it was nice to see Rarity take an outing, unlike in season 2. There's also a Sailor Moon costume, as well as Derpy dressed as Rainbow Powered Princess Twilight. The anime ponies also earned a laugh from me: I never knew Fluttershy was a fan, and she's not half bad at drawing either. Now we just have to see an Equestrian Japan. Neighpon, maybe? Nah, it doesn't need the pun.

I appreciate the lesson here, since Fluttershy didn't need to change after all. This episode scared a 7.5 out of me, simply because some of it was awkward in the wrong way. But it was still mostly fun.
