The Most Convoluted Thing I've Ever Penned · 9:09pm Dec 6th, 2015

Lots of you are currently aware I'm working on a Sci-Fi Mystery Moondancer fic. I'm about to release the first chapter (probably tomorrow) and will be posting one chapter every Monday thereafter until the fic is complete.

I usually write prose organically: I have the ideas in my head well enough that I don't need to organize them on paper. Twilight's Secret Journal is incredibly convoluted with author shenanigans (missing pages that reappear later, addendums by ponies other than Twilight, possible outright lies, missing memories that come back, dream sequences, etc.) but even there all I have to do to keep track of everything is keep a short list of "to do" notes. Since I know everything that's going on, what's real, what ain't, and what hasn't been shown to the readers yet, I can still keep track of it.

I have recently discovered that this level of effort is completely insufficient for my upcoming fic.

I can't reveal why in advance, but I've been using whiteboard, graph paper, notes, diagrams, and programming tools, and even then this story is crazy difficult to put together correctly. I really don't know what I was thinking when I decided to write this story. It was all so simple at first! :raritydespair:

I doubt most readers will see all the complexity, despite the fact that every bit of it will be carefully laid out. It's okay to enjoy a Sci-Fi story and not worry about the details, after all. Otherwise, this movie would have bombed:

Remember, three levels of dream, then the fourth one is permanent brain damage for some unexplained reason.

But details are still important to the author. Especially when your two protagonists are the kind of raging dorks who would demand perfection.

Awkward problem!
That's the wage of having too creative a brain! Do you want to lend me a part of it? :raritywink:

You could always go back through the stages by collapsing the dream.

These kiss edits are the best. I look forward to complex Sci-Fi Mystery shenanigans.
