So, I had this theory for a while about the time travel spell. That it was designed to let the caster see the past without changing because for timey-wimey reasons the present is what it is based on the actions of time travelers already. What I like to call closed loop time travel.
Then comes the S5 finale, where Starlight thinks she can change the past. But she uses an edited version of Starswirl's spell. Ergo the exact place and time you travel to is changed, but not the effect on time. Ergo she could not actually change the present because the effects of the spell both ensure the present is what it it because of time travel, but also that you would be doomed via infinite redo loops to eventually have no effect.
So even though she changed the small details, the base mechanics were still there of the spell leading to the present at the end being not changed.
