Comments on Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero

I've been doing those not-reviews thing for a while. I don't always have a lot to say (one time I had NOTHING to say at all), but at least I had some information to share with you. This time it will be a little different. This won't be a story about magical girls. It's a story about a very dumb person who ruined his own experience. Sit down, relax, and let me tell how Jetto experienced the tale

Funny story, I completely forgot that this title exists until recently, when Netflix used their magical algorithm to remind me that yes, I watch anime, and that I still haven't seen their greatest original show. Thank you Netflix. You did good (for once).

    Comments on Rozen Maiden

Talk about a blast from the past. Rozen Maiden is on the list of "barely counts as Magical Girls, but I've done worse" titles that I watched way back in the day and only recently remembered when I heard that song again. Dat song tho...

    Season 9 Finale Predictions

Having seen "Twilight's Seven" (a fantastic episode, leave this blog post to watch, there will be spoilers) I would like to make a prediction about how the story might come to a close. I'm doing it for bragging rights, therefore it's very important!

Quick Story Idea (that I won't write, because find out below)

I'm pretty sure I wasn't the first one who thought about it, but I still have to share it. No title yet, but the reason I'm not writing this EVER is because <drum roll>

I don't write clop. This is the moment you can leave safely, anything below is your fault.

Setting: Equestria, between seasons 8 and 9, Ponyville, Twilight's Castle

Season 5 Recap and opinions · 2:41pm Nov 30th, 2015

Season 5 has just ended with a big wham and it's time to think over how it was, compare and contrast and just write a bunch of thoughts I had.

Note on the ratings: I use the ACTUAL rating system, not IGN's "8/10 - It sucks". 10 means 'amazing!', 7 means 'pretty good', 5 means 'avarage', 3 means 'below avarage' and 1 means 'I hate it'.

Episode 1&2: The Cutie Map : BEST. SEASON OPENING. EVER! The town of equal marks was an idea that I expected to see in a Twilight Zone (the old tv show, not purple princess pony sensible area... perverts!) inspired fan fic, but they nailed it! Sunlight Glimmer was an intriguing villain and for the first time the show has been aired, I was really curious what's her deal. Don't get me wrong- I've read my share of villain fics to know that there's a lot of potential for Nightmare Moon, Chrysalis, Discord and Sombra to explore, but this is the first time the show, in itself, did it for me, without the aid of fan material, speculations or comic influences.

Rating: 10 different cutie marks out of ten.

Episode 3: Castle Sweet Castle : I label this episode as "had to happen" and "curiosity was satisfied". Golden Oaks Library was an important place, the most commonly seen place in all previous seasons, having it be gone couldn't just be shrugged of and this episode made a good job at easing us into the new status quo.

Rating: 6 Twilight's manestyles out of Ten.

Episode 4: Bloom and Gloom : I'll be completely honest, I had to google this episode to remember what it was about, which usually isn't a good sign. It's an avarage episode- Appleblooms nightmare cutie marks were interesting and it had its moments, but I couldn't help but feel like we already seen this episode twice before... mostly because we totally did. It was okay.

Rating: 5 cutie marks out of Ten.

Episode 5: Tanks for all the Memories : Meh. The first half was alright, but it has a lot of problems that stop me from liking it. For one, I'm expected to believe that Rainbow Dash is that attached to him? It would work if it was Rarity and Opal or Fluttershy and Angel, but Dash was barely ever seen with Tank! And the most important part is the 'factory destruction' thing. One- over last 4 seasons we were lead to believe that Rainbow is NOT BRAINDEAD OR STUPID, just not as smart as others, but we're supposed to buy that SHE WOULD DESTROY IMPORTANT, EXPENSIVE AS ALL HECK EQUIPMENT JUST TO STAY WITH HER PET? Nope, not buying it. And two, most important, she gets zero punishment for it! A simple 'I have to work overtime this winter to pay for the damages' or 'I was demoted from my manager position and pay for all this' would've sufficed. I know this is a cartoon, but most MLP writers got that this show can be smart and accessible for children at the same time, yet here we are, recycling a plot that came out of the wackier Looney Tunes episode.

Rating: 3 bilion bits of damaged equipment out of ten.

Episode 6: Appleoosa's Most Wanted : This is the one episode where I came for Breaburn, but stayed for Eyor... I mean, Trouble Shoes! I love this guy, I really do! And what do you know, it's a CMC episode that tackles a question not yet spoken for- what if you don't know what your cutie mark stands for? Apparently that kinda thing happens sometimes in this world and it's good to see a good example of this, with the problem itself solved by a trio that learned more about cutie marks over past years than anypony else in Equestria. I like it and I would love to see Trouble Shoes in future episodes.

Rating: 7 unlucky accidents out of Ten.

Episode 7: Make new friends but keep Discord : Confession time- I don't like Discord! Season 2 opening was amazing and I love it, but ever since he was reformed he lost all his charm and as much as I want John Delancie to get as many paychecks as possible, I was not a fan of his portrayal since. I wasn't all too hot for this episode, which turned out to be harmless and fun, but not because of Discord. Nope, not at all. I give all credit to mane 6 having a better approach to Gala this time. Also... Tree Hugger. I don't know HOW they managed to insert a hardcore stoner as her in the show but they did it! And they nailed it! Tree Hugger stole the show, hands down, everything she did, said and even the smallest gesture was priceless as all hell! She won't trounce Sunset Shimmer as best pony, but then again, who could? Maybe if she came back for another episode? I want to see her again so badly!
Oh, and the Schmooze? Meh, no impression on me at all.

Rating: 7 Hugged Fluttertrees out of Ten.

Episode 8: The lost Treasure of Griffinstone : For a gimmick as flashy as Cutie Map was, it took them a lot of time to get there, oh well. Anyway, there's not much to say about the episode, other than having Gilda, of all characters, come back and help solve the problem! It wasn't handled as well as I wanted, but I can't blame them for not trying. Also, this episode had my favourite Pinkie Moment of the entire season:

Pinkie Pie: [chewing] Grandpa Gruff's recipe is good, but it's missing one important ingredient.
Gilda: Don't tell me. 'Friendship'?
Pinkie Pie: Uh, no. Baking powder.

What I'm saying is, I like it when Pinkie's subtle once in a while.

Rating: 5 bits out of Ten.

Episode 9: Slice of life : It happened.

Rating: 10 Background ponies out of Ten.

Episode 10: Princess Spi---

"NONONONONONO! You will not GLOSS OVER THE 100TH EPISODE!"
"But if I start talking about, I will never stop! It was... perfect! It was exactly what we always wanted to see! I can't go over it like before!"
"What, no words on how they gave voice to your favourite background characters?"
"What can I say? That they all matched perfectly? That after the whole "Derpocalypse" they managed to give Derpy a voice that we all liked? That Doctor Whooves sounded EXACTLY like Doctor Who?"
"Which one?"
"Just... Doctor Who! It's not the voice itself, it's the way he talked! Or thought, or had a house full of gadgets? All that was missing was a Tardis and Sonic Screwdriver and we would've gotten an official, lawsuit bait! And it would be glorious."
"What about Lyra not wanting hands?"
"Oh please, that joke is so overdone, that everybody moved on. It's been what, three years since Anthropology ended? There's only so much "I want hands!" and Bon Bon facehooving you can take. I'm actually glad she got the spotlight here instead, which explained how she kept changing voices and why her toy has a different name!"
"What do you think of DJ-P0N3's voice?"
"It was perfect!"
"She didn't say a thing."
"EXACTLY! She never had a voice and by now there are so many fan interpretations of it, that there's no way they could make us all happy, so they went with the silent/maybe mute version. And it works, because she's paired with overtalkative Octavia, who lives with her. Out of the fan portrayals, those two are the most natural and writers nailed it.
"What about not having mane 6 anywhere in the episode?"
"They were in the background, which is amazing. After 99 episodes with those six (and occassional Spike) in centerpiece, they deserved a break. The fact that this break involved fighting Bugbear was... uh... funny, I guess?"
"Your favourite moment?"
"I can't possibly choose! Luna and Celestia arguing over presents; Stephen Magnet making a big comeback; the race to the wedding; Derpy in a plane; Big Lebowski cameo again; Gummy... so much awesome!"
"Anything wrong with this episode?"
"For me, nope. I thought some ponies were underrepresented, but with a crowd like this its a miracle so much happened. And this episode isn't really as amazing if you're not a fan, it's merely 'alright' if you don't get the jokes, or don't know about Doctor Whooves, or Muffins, or ScratchxTavia or Lyra Bon. All in all, this is a love letter to Bronies first and foremost, but after what we did to them in terms of marketing, spreading the word and buying their merchendise, it was about time they acknowledged us in the show proper. And they didn't have to do this, they could've just made an episode like any, but they did it. And we love them for it."
"Okay, I see your original point now. No sense in recapping this episode, it would take too long so you don't have to elaborate on it. Carry on."
"Thank you for understanding, Brain. There's nothing I'll say about this episo--- WAIT A MINUTE!"

Episode 10: Princess Spike : Not much to say about this one. Spike episodes are never high on my list, but this one was one of the better ones. I would've preffered if it went a little differently, but for what it's worth, I still enjoyed it. Two complaints I have: Fancy Pants was unusually jerky this time around, for some reason, and Cadance, as much as I love seeing Pink Princess do stuff, could've gotten involved a bit more. We need more Cadance, I demand more Cadance! In fact, I demand more princess episodes! We need it!

Rating: 6 Princesses out of Ten.

Episode 11: Party Pooped : Yaks. Are. THE WORST! Dear lord, just... WHAT A BUNCH OF JERKS?!

"Hey, we made this think you like, despite not knowing much about it, but we tried our best!"
"NOT PERFECT, DESTROY YOUR HARD LABOR AND SPIT ON YOUR COURTESY, HOW DARE YOU TRY TO PLEASE US!"

Pinkie antics save this episode from being my most hated episode in the entire show. And, Pink Princess Cameo, which is always nice.

Rating: 3 IQ that Yaks have out of ten.

Episode 12: Amending Fences : I already made a blog post about it, so I'll keep it short (nope, I won't, but I can try). This is my hands down favourite episode of the season, and one of the contenders for my favourite episode of all time! Part of it was seeing Moondancer in the show being 180 of what I was writing about her, yet she STILL made a huge impact on me, as well as other part of Twilight's old friends. I like everything about this episode and contrary to popular belief, it didn't break "Sunny, Moony, Twily" - it actually ENHANCED IT! My head is full of ideas since watching it and time will tell how it will influence my future writing.

"What's this? A subjective opinion! How dare you! You must be objective when reviewing stuff!"
"First of, it's not a review. Second, there's no such thing as an objective review. And third, yes I like it mostly because it has Moondancer in it. So what? I don't care, I'm too old to be influenced by other opinions!"

Rating: 11 old friends out of Ten.

Episode 13: Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep? : Remember what I said about Princess episodes? And how we wanted more of those? THIS IS ONE OF THEM! YES! MORE MOONBUTTS! GIVE THEM TO ME! HAHAHAHAHAHA!
I liked it.

Rating: 9 Princesses out of Ten.

Episode 14: Canterlot Buitique : First of all, I like this episode because it's about gembutt. Before Sunbutt and Hatbutt (Coco Pommel) was a thing, Gembutt was best pony and she is still high on my list, all thanks to episodes like those. Long since has the 'brainless fashion pony' been gone in favor of 'inspired generous fashionista' that we all love (or don't understand, therefore don't love, but those people don't get it anyway). There is a message about consumerism, marketing, corporations and blahblahblah, I'm a writer, not an internet reviewer. Sassy Saddles was cool and I love the fact that she wasn't totally shoved aside at the end but given a chance to shine and develop. Too bad she'll never appear again.

Rating: 8 fabulous, custom dresses out of Ten.

Episode 15: Rarity Investigates : Two gembutts in a row? Sign me up! Also, Sassy Saddles appeared again for a brief moment, which was pleasant to see. This is the most continuity we've had, not counting two-parters. And Treehouse burning. And Dash joining Wonderbolts. And The Royal Wedding. And Crystal Empire reapearing once in a while... huh, come to think of it, we'e having more continuity then ever! Awesome! Anyway, this episode was a blast! Like the Cake episode back in the day (I don't remember and I won't google it), it was the mystery in the old style, except this time with 20% more noir thrown into it! Yes, the answer was obvious from the start, but it's a kids show, so slack has been cut.
I wish the theory about Wind Raider being father/grandfather of Lightning Dust was true. Please oh please, I want more Lightning Dust!

Rating: 8 Wonderbolt Mothers out of Ten (I'm stretching this rating system, am I?)

Episode 16; Made in Manehattan : Geez, it took them eight episodes to get back to Cutie Map? What's the point of even having it? I wish they used it more ofte-- what's that? Can it be, in the distance? Yes. YES! It's the Hatbutt! Coco Pommel is back! And she's even more adorable than ever! Sorry Fluttershy, but your reign of the most adorable tiny horse has ended. All hail Hatbutt! All fanboying aside, this was a nice episode and the message was more personal than any before it. I have a lot of struggles with promoting boardgames and creating a community and this episode was like it was written about me, for me. I didn't like it nearly as much at first, but it grows on me every time I see it. Good job.

Rating: 8 Coco Pommels out of Ten.

Episode 17: Brotherhooves Social : I said it before, I'll say it again- Peter New is my new hero.

Rating: 8 drag queens out of Ten.

Episode 18: Crusaders of the Lost Mark : I also made a post about it before, but it bears repeating- this episode was awesome! Diamond Tiara getting development and redemption and the Cutie Mark Crusaders finall getting their cutie marks? Holy crap, they couldn't do it better than this! I heard some people say that this should've been a final episode of the season, or the entire show. I STRONGLY disagree. The reason it worked so well was BECAUSE nobody expected it! We're used to final episodes showing something big, we're waiting for the big reveal and when it happens, we're like "oh, so this is the thing, cool", but this time were like "wait, what? WHAT?!". Kudos for the studio for hiding a thing this big all this time while masquarading it as a simple 'Diamond Tiara is awful' episode, like we've had previously.

Rating: 10 diamond tiara's for Diamond Tiara out of Ten.

Episode 19: The one where Pinkie Pie knows : While not the worst episode this season, this is my biggest letdown. I was hoping for a news about a baby since Season 2 finale, but this was a bit too sudden, fast and with no fanfares at all. Pinkie Pie once again saves what would be a complete disaster of an episode. I know I was supposed to be giddy and happy about Shining Armor in his new old room, but that scene didn't work for me. At all. I don't know why.

Rating: 5 baby ponies out of Ten.

Okay, I'm running out of time and breath (yes, I know I'm only typing, not talking!), so I'll leave the rest for the next post. This wall's big enough as it is.

there's no such thing as an objective review

Yes, there is. An objective review is judging something's quality not by how much you personally enjoyed it, but by how well-made it is or how other people might like it. It's why Citizen Kane keeps on being praised as the greatest film ever even though barely anyone actually enjoys watching it. It's why we have the concept of Guilty Pleasures.
