Katie's Summer Diary #4

Good morning, diary!

After everything that happened yesterday, Whisper says I should get the Youkai Watch upgraded so I can find stronger Youkai! Sounds like a good idea and I didn't have any better plans for today, so it's off to find this watch shop that'll soup up my crazy watch!

This watch shop is in the older, hillier part of the city across the river.

The old watchmaker...is a Youkai in human form! Wow! There sure are a lot of strange things in this town!

Anyway, he says he can upgrade my watch, but he needs "special parts"--a cog, a screw, and a spring.

Wow. Real special parts there...and wouldn't you know it, I hafta wander allllll over town to find 'em...

Two of the parts are easy to find. A couple of friends of the watchmaker are just waiting to hand them to me. The third part, though...it's hidden somewhere inside this big, creepy house full of trick doors and Youkai.

I wandered around in the creepy old mansion until I found the key that'd unlock the big door right in the middle. Inside, there was a sleeping Youkai named Baku, the dream eater. Ironically, the dream eater was having a nightmare. We woke him up, and he woke up grouchy and attacked us. After the fight, he realized he wasn't dreaming and we weren't monsters. He also said my face looks tasty.

Umm...okay...

Anyway, he gave me his Youkai Medal and said he wants to eat my dreams. That's...super creepy, but so long as he promises not to eat my face, I guess it's okay? Anyway, he also gave me the last part I need to get my Youkai Watch upgraded. So now it's back to the old watchmaker's shop!

But when I get there with all the parts, he says he's not in the mood to work because he's lost his lucky undies. He wants me to get them for him.

Umm...EW? Dude. Even if you ARE a Youkai, isn't it just a little bit creepy for an old dude to ask a grade-school girl to look for his undies? And GROSS! I explain to him that there are a number of reasons this is incredibly wrong. He says if Baku were around, it'd be a different matter.

Wow, looks like Baku's already going to save me from a nightmare!

...except it turns out the only reason Baku's going to be helpful is that it can make me not-sleepy and turn into a copy of me so it'll look like I'm asleep in my own bed. So it didn't save me from the nightmare of having to find a creepy old man's underpants AT ALL.

As soon as I head outside, things start to get...weird. The streets turn all spooky, this really bad feeling fills the air, and this GIANT FREAKING RED MONSTER THING SHOWS UP! Whisper says it's an Oni, and that I have to run, fast!

I can't get to the Hot Springs for some reason, so I backtrack to the school, where that Youkai that saved me before shows up and creates a sliding door at the school gate! Once I step through it, everything goes back to normal!

Once we're safe, Whisper tells me that what we just went through is called "Terror Time", and it's a special kind of nightmare kids have. The Oni can't actually kill me or anything, but apparently there's like, dream treasure I can find if I make it out of Terror Time without getting caught?

Anyway, speaking of nightmares, now that we're safe from the Oni, it's time to go back to hunting for the underwear.

At the bathhouse where the watchmaker lost his undies, the hostess says there's nothing in the lost and found, but tells me I can check around. Whisper says he feels a strong Youkai aura coming from the men's side of the baths. Gee, I never wanted to look over there like, ever...

There's a Youkai alright. It's a giant pig that takes up the entire tub! He's wearing the old man's underwear. We try to ask nicely for him to return them, but he's a total jerk about it and attacks!

It's a tough fight, but my Youkai friends are just barely able to beat the big pig and take back the undies! I can't get back to Timers & More fast enough with these things. I'm gonna wash my hands until they bleed after this!

FINALLY, I get the watch upgraded! Now I can go home, kick Baku out of my bed, and sleep...

...as soon as I wash my hands...eww...

Moth's Thoughts:

Everything about the watchmaker's undies fetch quest creeped me out. It'd have been bad enough if I was playing as Nate, but I'm playing as Katie.

Katie's reactions to the entire thing were hilarious and priceless, though.

I forgot to mention this, by the way, but the "Bugs Collected" and "Youkai Medals" sections of the weekly blog apply only to what I collected in each chapter of the game, not overall.

One thing I like about Youkai Watch is that all the "Request" and "Favor" sidequests are marked on the touchscreen minimap with blue and orange flags (respectively), so you'll know if you're near someone who has a request for you.
