Dragon Courtship and Mating · 12:05am Nov 25th, 2015
Courtship:
Dragon Courtship involves six stages:
Stage 1: The Dance
Every dragon relationship begins with the dance, whether it be platonic or romantic, between two males, two females, a male and a female, a female and a hermaphrodite, or a male and a hermaphrodite. The dance is simply two dragons getting to know each other through combat, stopping when one dragon clearly pins down the other. What sets apart courtship from a platonic Dance is the presence of a flame “kiss” to the neck of the defeated partner.
Stage 2: Flirting
Dragon flirting involves quite a bit of roughhousing and physical contact, with various touches and strokes to various body parts signalling various responses. Curiously enough, the patterns of these touches tend to go in the same order when it comes to the most overtly sexual movements.
Stage 3: Courtship
Courtship begins proper with courtship gifts, usually involving either a fresh kill or, should one of the pair have a hoard, a good amount of gems or other edibles. The submissive partner brings the gifts to the dominant, and depending on the type of relationship, the dominant partner may or may not choose to share the gift with their partner. For mating purposes only, the dominant keeps the gift to themselves, adding it to their hoard or simply eating it entirely. For a longterm relationship, the dominant shares with the submissive.
Stage 4: Consummation
Consummation does not refer to the human usage of the word in regards to a relationship, but rather refers to the ritual in which a courtship is sealed and the two partners become more or less bonded for life. While most dragonesses prefer to simply halt a courtship at stage three and then mate for a scant few weeks, those that move to stage 4 stay with their partners for life, even going so far as to die within days of their partner.
Stage 5: Copulation
Stage 5 occurs anywhere from a minimum of two days to a month of stage 4, depending on the preferences of the dragoness and/or the dominant partner. The more delay between Consummation and Copulation usually denotes either time spent to get to know the partner via words or the search for a permanent home. Shorter times usually come to partners who already know each other well and have their own homes, any delay simply coming from the time it takes to settle from the emotional high of the “wedding”.
Stage 6: Child Rearing
Stage 6 is by far the simplest stage, with both parents simply content to raise their children until such an age as they are able to join the Migration and leave the nest permanently. And thus, the cycle continues.
Dragon Reproduction:
Dragons are capable of mating all year around, though many choose the winter months simply from the fact that the act of mating generates a lot of fire.
Dragonesses typically ovulate around two weeks per month.
The average dragon pregnancy lasts about thirteen months, with seven eggs per clutch.
Dragon eggs take approximately eight months to hatch.
The infant survival rate of most dragons is actually rather high, with an average of five per clutch surviving past their first migration. The unlucky two are normally killed due to the actions of easily enraged adults.
Dragons reach breeding age when they hit 29 years old, and remain fertile for their entire lives.
Birthing dragon eggs is painful, as the birth canals on dragons are paradoxically small and the eggs do not come with any sort of lubrication and are, in fact, rather bumpy and sharp in some places. Birthing takes approximately a week, and during that time the females normally roar loudly enough to echo for hundreds of miles and fire massive gouts of flame out of sheer agony.
Care of Eggs:
Dragon eggs must be bathed in flame daily in order to aid the development of the young. Additionally, during the second month, the eggs must be exposed daily to a certain amount of various stimuli in order to properly form a specific type of breath weapon.
