According to the newly released map of Equestria, this is "Arimaspi Territory". Apparently the Arimaspi was the creature that stole the Griffon King's... thingamajig. Back in the Gilda Gets Redeemed episode earlier this season.

It might just be the angle, but it looks like a one eyed skull with horns. Like the arimaspi that stole the gryphon relic, only much bigger.
