Episode Discussion » S5E23 - The Hooffields and McColts · 11:18am Nov 15th, 2015

Princess Twilight and Fluttershy are called by the map to settle a dispute between two feuding families who can't even remember why they are fighting.

This is what I get for having a messed up sleep cycle....apologies! I thought I was getting better at this :(

I thought it was a good episode. Honestly yes it was a bit cliche but I was expecting that when I saw the title. I loved how Twilight was in this episode. Her adorkableness really showed.

Fluttershy is so adorable in this episode! :rainbowkiss:

Besides being really magically powerful she didn't actually do much that helped solve the problem, though, did she? :unsuresweetie:

At least someone finally noticed that she was an alicorn, and that that was somewhat peculiar :ajsleepy:

5.5/10. Meh. Not good, but not bad. The Hatfield/McCoy plot was plain and straightforward, with no subversion to keep it fresh. Considering how often it's been done, they really needed to take it in a new direction to keep it interesting. They missed a grand opportunity for worldbuilding by only showing a valley and two hills instead of a whole town or region. The characterization and character design of the hicks was good, but the resolution felt lacking. Decades of conflict, bitterness, and pride all fixed by a few cute bunnies in five minutes. 22 minutes or not, I think they could have thought up something better than that.

Twilight's characterization also seemed a little concerning. It's like flanderization's starting to creep in a little. Bookhorse is supposed to be a parody name, not her entire character. It does help the "Twilight tries to fix a problem with science/etc. and fails" plot's been used since Pinkie Keen.

Probably one of the better Fluttershy episodes; she didn't cower away as she normally does when faced with conflict, and I think this is one of the few times where they really showed the concept of her drawing strength from animals and using it to good effect.

It was too easy to catch on when I found that the Hooffields weren't good at building but good at crops and vice versa for the McColts. Of course the one thing that got me hooked is that the setting was in "The Smoking Mountains" which was also a common location in The Land Before Time franchise. Obviously the mountains here weren't volcanoes but still solidifies my headcanon between the two universes.

Come on Knighty, don't start pulling the bullshit linked image thing, too! It's so fucking annoying when it drags me out of my feed, and makes me lose my place.

Am I the only one who got a real Loony Tunes vibe from this one? I hope not. :duck:

This was a very solid episode. The humor was tight, the moral was resonant, and we seriously need more of Fluttershy playing peacemaker. There's honestly not much to dislike about this one. :yay:

On a side note, I am very glad that Twilight not getting summoned by the map didn't turn into a running joke. She needs some time out of the castle.

LINK PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was somewhere between Hillbilly Hare and, well, the Gravel Wars. What I saw was RED versus BLU using insane ammo for a stupid reason so, yeah, we could well have seen some idiot with an eyepatch blubbering that everypony thought he was a one-eyed bloody monster.

3543745 I think you're asking lot of a children's show. How many 8 year olds even know who the Hatfield's and McCoy's were, let alone that Trojan Horse gag. This version of MLP is very pun based and driven. Also, it teaches lessons that can be used on the playground. Minus the magic elements of Unicorns, the writers succeed well at that goal.
I kinda liked the carrot cake twist, for me that was a nice throw back to cartoons from over 15 years ago did.
As for the speed, Lets look at the traditional mold: tiny bit of exposition, problem gets introduced, we see results of problem, initial comical attempts to solve problem fail, pushed to last resort the problem gets solved, happy resolution with time unexplained time jumps/warps.

The conversation between Twilight and Fluttershy was just glorious. :rainbowlaugh:

'Snacks, books, blankets, books!'

'You said books twice.'

'There are a lot of books.'

That "And... and I'm here, too" at the gates. *implodes*

Fluttershy has so much faith in Twilight, and the adorable way she looks up to Twilight is just so HER.

The opening was so strong. I've been avoiding spoilers forever. Until I saw a still of them hovering over two points with houses... Instant Sonic Underground raccoon hillbilly feuds came to mind. God I wish I had been terribly wrong. Still, hoped for something new. But it played it straight and narrow. Had they not added the "Save the animals" thing I doubt we would have even seen Fluttershy get to do anything. =(

How do you open up so strong and a nice premise of having Twilight become frustrated with her role of being a "Princess of Friendship" and questioning herself and her ability to live up to it, somehow get tied up into such a "Southerners Are Savage Ignorant Creatures" episode?

I suppose because it's the easiest of all to write for I suppose. No effort was put into this, hell the story boarder and animators didn't really give us anything that stood out beyond just Fluttershy having traumatic flashbacks of Rarity's tail slapping. I could have settled for just watching Fluttershy discuss her books in the book club with her animals for 22 minutes and have been a more entertaining episode.

Actually...

Actually, yeah. Why doesn't she invite Twilig_ oh right, because Twilight's the PRINCESS of HIKIKOMORIES! :facehoof:
Damn shut-in needs to go out to hang with her friends. She's missing all these great bookclub moments with her animals! (also, that's TWO FOR TWO on that Nightmare Night episode. Fluttershy's tail phobia, and Fluttershy's love of reading with her animal friends!)

I wish this was more directly tied into a more obvious love of nature and such like they were building it up to me, which I guess it was somewhat consistent if you really want to accept the minimalist writing and somehow these animals knowing and remembering the ponies neither families can remember. Then again animals passing own nightmarish stories of the destruction of their habitat could be possible. But come on. =/

Also, incoming yandere fics with those triplets and their saw, buzzsaw, and hand-saw cutie marks... *shudder* Inb4 somepony in a hollow tree gets sawed through.

Overall I was wanting to love this episode since it finally brings Fluttershy and Twilight together in what could have been a fantastic adventure. But instead of showing a different side to this overdone trope, they just decide to do what every show ever has done and just toss ponies into it.

Well, it was a much, much, much needed episode after the last two "train wreck" episodes and I liked it.

Zecora's sysnopsis on the episode:

It's like TF2,
RED warring against BLU;

The episode was....okay I guess. "What about Discord?" was better IMO. The episode took a predictive route and it wasn't all that interesting. I did enjoy seeing Fluttershy and Twilight interact with one another though. I wish Spike went alone with them though.

When I said last week that I was hoping for a shootout-- this isn't what I had in mind.

3543754 I thought they were saying Smoky Mountains. IRL they are called the Great Smoky Mountains because the fog in the morning looks like smoke.

3543745 I completely agree. Personally, I think fans tend to overuse the word "Flanderized," but I'm starting to think it fits Twilight this season. They've definitely been overplaying her obsession with books for her past few focus episodes.

I enjoyed this episode, actually. Sure, we've seen the "Hatfield and McCoy" Trope done several times in the past, but often with little success (I'm looking at you, Great Divide), but I feel this one was done well. I enjoyed the designs of both the Hoofield and McColt families (especially Big Papa McColt, I want a ten-gallon hat), and Twilight once again has proven to be an adorkable gem. Sure it had a few slow moments, such as that word Twilight used that made me think of another certain mad scientist we won't see for another year, right Morty? All in all, I give this episode a 7/10, and I'd probably watch it again. Y'all come back now, ya hear?!

I swear to Celestia I thought it was gonna be a Romeo and Juliet recreation

This episode is like a very, very, very tame version of the feud between the Palestinians and the Israelis. I wonder if that was on purpose?

3543883 Well, it does work with pretty much any war I guess. The animals are parallels to the civilians caught in the middle it seems.

3543851 yeah. the bulk of this whole season has felt off. We know the show has good writers but there A game is just not here this season, besides a handful of good Episodes. In my mind this is the weakest season to date.

3543851

I don't think it was supposed to be about the books. I think what the writers were going for was that she was got to see all her friends go on friendship missions while she was left behind. When her time to go finally came, she wanted to live up to her title of Princess of Friendship and prove her worth to the point that she was overcompensating with BOOK! When in doubt, go with what you know. Being passed over by the Fri(end) Table so many times made her a little manic.

It was a decent episode but man, Fluttershy just failed to make any impression on me whatsoever in this episode, she's one of the main characters but it was just the same usual "I am shy, I am quiet, I am cute" shtick with her until the very end, ultimately despite being the one with the solution I felt Twilight completely overshadowed Fluttershy, who just was not entertaining and offered nothing new, She's had a rough season, not so much that she's been portrayed in a negative light but in that she's hardly had any pressence at all, if this was my first season I think I wouldn't even recognize her as a main character Im starting to feel like her character is just spent. Twilight was far funnier, had many more interesting moments with her attempts to mend things and just generally felt great, especially compared to the boring lecturer Twilight that was so often present in S4, she did the "Im going to tell you all about FREINDSHIP!" thing here too but it was written in a way that Twilight remained endearing instead of just incredibly dull.

The Plot of course, Hatfields and McCoy's inspired stuff is a very stock cartoon plot. But i'll commend MLP for not totally falling flat on it's face like quite a few other shows that have done this kind of plot. Not much else to say there.

Overall id say like a 6 or a 7 not sure which id give it just yet.

3543745

I disagree strongly with this point on Twilight though, if anything THIS and last week is the Twilight I want MORE of. The Neroutic, easily excited and over reactive horse who was once one of my favorite characters. The Twilight that's actually fun to watch and easy to relate and connect with. Id take Twilight written the way she was in this episode and the last 100 times before id take a single other episode of Friendship Lecturer Twilight "I know more about this than all of you, time look at me lord my perfection" that was everywhere in Season 4. That Twilight went rocketing down from my top 3 to my 5th spot, she's boring and very difficult to connect with. If anything this is just righting the ship when it comes to Twilight.

3543735

I think it's better that a character get to be entertaining and do interesting things in an episode than be the one with the solution. Twilight might not have had the solution in this episode but she sure stood out to me a lot more than Fluttershy regardless.

Glad the show reminds me that it's TV-Y.

3543849 It feels refreshing to me that they didn't make a horse pun out of a real location for once. Granted, taking away one word is still kinda facepalm-y, but still, it's refreshing.

3543896 I don't think it's the weakest season, but I agree that sometimes it feels off. I blame the new writers. Now, don't get me wrong, new writers are not always bad, but often it feels like they don't know the show or characters as well. I've noticed this with other shows too. *coughOnceUponaTime*

3543896

I think this is very wrong, I actually think this is the most consistent season since the first. This was a weaker episode sure, but every season has had those and this season to me has had as many great ones as any. But I think it's weakest have been well above the weakest of Seasons 2, 3 and especially 4, 4 had lots of great episodes but it's worst episodes were easily the weakest of them all. Like id take Princess Spike over Somepony to Watch Over Me every day of the week.

3543939 This season has more meh episodes then any other season for me. and of Course Friendship Games was a major disappointment to me. Even the vetrans have not shown their A game much this season. I'm getting more out of this site then the show.

S'alright in messing up your scheduled, nothing new was really introduced in the episode. Just the mediocre plot of the stereotypical clan feuding; complete with the common two hills, unknown reasoning of fighting, stubborn grudges with tricks all around, and a dash of a Trojan horse pony gimmick mixed with an internet meme about fooling others with the promising of cake.

3543944 it's more number of episodes. Granted each season had some weak or terrible ones but they were few. This season is the opposite for me. So many terrible moves or wasted potential this season.

War....war never changes.

I think it is a great season and we have had lots of wonderful episodes. Remember we had the 100th episode, Make New Friends but Keep Discord, the Moondancer Episode, the Luna one, the one about Applebloom's dreams and the cutie marks. This show has not his the epic fail part yet. Why I would say it's still going on pretty strong. We have just had two boring episodes

There was some pretty bad dialogue, particularly Twilight's "I'm feeling very unprepared" (show don't tell). However, I laughed pretty consistently and found it to be one of the show's funnier episodes, which kept the predictability from bothering me too much. It was a fun episode and I actually liked it more than the last four. 7/10

I'd say the last episode I've REALLY liked was Crusaders of the Lost Mark, but it's been much longer since I've straight up disliked an episode either. I'd say a lot of season 5 has been very middle of the road for the series, like season 3. Season 1 had the episodes that were the most all over the place. My very favorite and very least favorite episodes are from that season. Maybe because it was all still new and left a bigger impact. By this point I'm less impressed with the good and more easily able to shrug off the bad.

I can see why people feel that the narrative wasn't quite up to snuff, but I still enjoyed watching it just for the entertaining shenanigans.

In regards to how well this season holds up compared to the others, I think it's been on kind of a wavering streak. When it's good, it's really good, but it hasn't managed to stay consistently at that level, making for some quite noticeable low points. It's definitely not as weak as season 3, but it suffers from those drops in the long run.

Hilarity when Big Papa McColt ordered them to form "Delta Force Formation" and they assumed the triangle form, which is an upper-case delta symbol. >D

Come to think of it, who the heck were they marrying to keep the clan going and why was everypony pretty much the same colour, just different shades? Must be hard to be brought into a family feud out in the middle of nowhere. (Maybe they're distantly related to Limestone)

3543735 She did what she needed too in the episodes. What I was referencing though was that she showed up with a whole book on how to solve the problems and eventually realized that her preconceived notions about how to go about it were wrong. Her adorkableness at the end when they were heading back was just Twilight being herself.

Pumpkins. So many pumpkins :pinkiecrazy:

3543792 Hehe! I lol'd at that scene :rainbowlaugh:

In my top 10 of best.

Seriously unimpressed. The majority of Twilight's character growth over the course of the show was completely thrown out for the sake of humor in this episode.

It wasn't a bad episode, but it's probably the weakest cutie mark map episode. The story behind the feud is lousy and makes no sense. The families were boring and had no real characters to them. The plot is more or less predictable. It had some golden moments like the interaction between Fluttershy and Twilight, but it wasn't much to save this episode. 7 out of 10 for me.

Not a very good episode IMO, but it was still pretty enjoyable to watch.

Also, Twilight Sparkle and Fluttershy look super adorable when they were looking up and trying to talk with the McColts.

Reading the description of the episode and then watching it reminds me of that festival that takes place in this Greek town.

Rouketopolemos (Greek Рουκετοπόλεμος, literally Rocket-War) is the name of a local traditional event held annually at Easter in the town of Vrontados (Βροντάδος) on the Greek island of Chios. As a variation of the Greek habit of throwing fireworks during the celebration of the service at midnight before Easter Sunday, two rival church congregations in the town perform a "Rocket War" by firing tens of thousands of home-made rockets across town, with the objective of hitting the bell tower of the church of the other side. The rockets are wooden sticks loaded with an explosive mixture containing gunpowder and launched from grooved platforms.
