Skallagrim went ahead and tested the same leather type (same piece even) with ranged weapons. You can see here that quality leather will stop or deflect crossbow bolts.
You can also see that this leather will resist birdshot, from a modern shotgun, using modern smokeless powder, at a close range. Meaning at long range this stuff might resist buckshot from the same weapons, and would except at very close range almost certainly deflect, stop, or reduce the injury from a blackpowder era firearm.
Awesome.
Jesus, that stuff is tough! I really didn't expect it to resist bodkin points, but I suppose the flex of the material defeats the otherwise-armor-piercing point. Even with the cutting edge of the hunting quarrel, though, you'd just be bleeding your target.
I had always known that leather armors were highly effective, and they were not that thick, but still....
3515310 With padding under the leather it may not actually pierce enough to do more then make a flesh wound.
3515311 That's why I pointed out 'just bleeding'. With the padding you would be wearing under treated leather, it wouldn't even score deep enough to cause any real muscle damage.
jeez... I was hoping it could take the buckshot, but even then, I'm impressed.
with mail underneath, the piercing arrow likely wouldn't get far at all
3520792 Even with simple cloth padding beneath it wouldn't do more than poke through your skin. Three layers of canvice is pretty stab resistant. A thick carhart jacket has been known to catch .22.38 and 9mm rounds from time to time (But then again there are documented cases of a human head deflecting 9mm soooo)
3520897 but then again, arrowheads have been known to go through kevlar easily
3521072 THat's becuase kevlar is not made to resist piercing, but bludgeoning. Bullts do not puncture, they smash. If you layered thick canvice in two layers and put a kevlar coating over them you would have a bullet resistant fabric that was also knife resistant. This is sold in a lot of places even. I can get it at my local outfitters... if I had the like 30 bucks a squair yard.
3521098 30 bucks? not great, but not horrible if you were looking for good armor
3521497 Eh... Passable armor. I'd rather pay 2 grand for a set of custom fullplate.
3521508 what armor would you prefer if you had to face guys with guns and/or swords?
personally, I'd find a way to carry esapi/ar500 under scalemail coated leather
3521520 With guns involved, I wouldn't take any armor. Mostly because the armor is pretty much useless. I would however take a full size SWAT breaching shield. It will stop a hunting rifle many many times, and there isn't a damn thing a melee tool can do to it. Additionally I am trained in shield and blade, it would maximize my chances.
3521530 those things are basically modern scutums, but better...
even then, a flak vest might help, in the event of a ricochet, or some other flying debris
(safety goggle/glasses as well, if nothing else)
3521554 VIsion impairment is not advised. Even a clear lense is dangerous as it can be obstructed necessitating you to whip them clean and thus taking a hand off a weapon. THe flack vest may help, but the shield is your best friend, and quite heavy. YOu do not want to over encumber yourself.
3521568 we could argue forever about weight vs protection, and benefits vs risks of safety protection for your eyes, but I'd risk the goggles (maybe glasses since those can come off 200% faster)
but I would definitely consider armor reduction (like maybe a leather jacket even)
it's all very subjective, depends on the scenario
3521588 Quite true. Unless powerarmor is an option. Then take the power armor.
3521719 unless of you somehow already have something better.... ehh, take it anyways, you might need it
