M2B reviews Choices by Fret · 7:26am Oct 31st, 2015
Spoilers... (Well Duh)
Read Story Here
To start off let’s look at the title; Choice.
Choices are something we all make, whether the choice we make is good or bad time will tell. The word by itself can literally mean a lot of things.
Also, looking at the tags for characters Celestia and Discord are the main characters so initially a Good VS Evil story was what I thought the story would be about.
As it turns out, looking at the short description, that’s not the case. (Also on a side note, there is an OC Character as well? Okay…wonder who he or she is? )
From the description of the story it is a Discord x Celestia ship story somewhat. The story is tagged as Tragedy and the story itself certainly works up to that tag. But reading the story overall I can definitely agree it also can’t be entirely tagged as Romance as well despite the story being a story involved with a Dislestia ship. Would I tag this story as dark, I have no idea ask PresentPerfect, he’s the expert not me.
Reading the beginning of the story I had no idea what was going on in the beginning. That was the first problem with this story, the very lack of context that creates a good setting. It would have definitely been nice if there was more of a back-story to it. Sadly, the short description of the story did not help either on my confusion.
There's three of us, and only room for two, I need to pick someone... who would that be?
What I can make out of this story is that it is around the time of the canon MLP series since you mention The Mane Six. And apparently Discord and Celestia had a child but Celestia died giving birth.
(Wait… Celestia’s dead? Isn’t she immortal or something? Okay now I’m even more confused.
And this is Discord’s POV.
... I guess that make sense, because where’s the fun in making sense. )
Discord sacrifices the child to save Celestia. This may sound dark but I don’t feel any sorrow for the death of the child frankly because I don’t even know his or her name since there is no description of the child at all in any way. The child becomes merely a plot device for this Tragic Story.
Anyways, Discord, regretting his decision upon seeing Celestia, sacrifices himself to save the child. This short ending sounds really dark but I do like the idea of Discord learning the value of Sacrifice.
The story definitely had an interesting concept and I would definitely tag this as a Tragedy despite the loose ends of the plot.
Maybe Fret planned the story to be vague that way so us readers can come to that realisation later of what’s happening but it kind of left me confused. Perhaps others will feel the same. Usually good stories has proper exposition explaining the story to help readers understand.
[Also, Fun Fact: Fret took about an hour to write this. Maybe that’s why the story is like this.]
Overall, Choices is a story riddled with confusion initially but has a stunning realisation and conclusion at the end. The story definitely deserved better. Perhaps Fret could write a prequel or sequel or a side story to tie the loose ends of this story.
So does this Story truly show the quality of Fret as a writer?
NO! Her other works are quite good.
Every writer has ups and downs in their writing. That’s how we improve. Here’s to hoping better works from Fret as a writer.
And Happy Halloween my dear followers. Trick Or Treat.
This is MixMassBasher signing out.
Yay! Thank you so for doing this. I had fun reading it ^-^.
And I agree that the story is riddled with confusion. I guess that's what happens when you get bored and write something in an hour
I'll be sure to link my watchers to this~
