    Coming Soon, Really

I've been a bit under the weather since Trotcon, but feeling better now.

This weekend I need to work on putting together some poni stuff for my niece (she's up here for her birthday), and my inability to do basic things makes that a bit difficult. So I may be delayed a few days on the Trotcon retro and the other long post I still really really want to share with y'all.

Twilight's Enigmatic Clarification (AI ≠ LLM GAI)

To head off any possible confusion, I've added a clarification to TEEE's story page and a note at the top of the chapter explaining that TEEE was not written using LLM generative AI (the story actually predates this technology by several years).

I will be at Trotcon. Still alive.

I remain alive, and as of June 13th am now the number of symmetries in a cube.

    I will be at Trotcon.

Please contact me if you're there! (Or even if not, that's okay too.) :pinkiesad2:

I might do an author party. I'll announce it with another post. Signal boost would be useful.

I am still alive and also at AnthrOhio

Sorry for disappearing. Ironically the thing I wanna talk about is the thing that keeps me from being here at FF or getting anything done. :facehoof:

You Have *Terrible* Taste in Literature · 4:52pm Oct 15th, 2015

Against the advice of my lawyer, I'd like to take a moment to directly insult my fans for reading my stories. :trollestia:

Oh, I'm going there.

I've been here on Fimfiction for getting close to a year now, and I have some stats to show for it. First, here are links to the eleven stories I have not (yet) deleted and burned:

Twilight's Secret Journal
The Sound of One Hoof Clopping
The Element of Surprise
Back to Normal
The Laughter I Choose to Be
The Clarity of Darkness
Polyphileos
The Price of a Smile
The Knight and the Knave
Flash in the Pan (immolation still pending)
Girl Talk

Here are two graphs showing my follower bumps (top) and story views (bottom), annotated with which stories are most likely responsible:

Looking first at the bottom graph, it's pretty obvious I've had a lot of love for TSJ, EoS, BtN, Laughter, and more recently, The Knight and the Knave and Girl Talk. The two stories I think are seriously underrated are The Clarity of Darkness and The Price of a Smile. Darkness is shipping, and that tends to be dangerous terrain on Fimfiction. Smile has won a couple of awards now (although I've removed all mention of them), but it didn't resonate with readers. My best guess is that it's too weird in the beginning and readers don't trust where it's headed enough to dedicate time to an eight-chapter fic; but your guess is likely as good as mine.

For the record, I'm not surprised that EoS and Laughter are near the top of the pack. I've waffled on how much I like Laughter, but it's grown on me and I think it's first-tier among my works: the way I hid the twist throughout the story was clever and it fit perfectly. I think EoS, Laughter, Darkness, and Smile are easily my best stories, though EoS needs to be rewritten. Honestly, everything I wrote prior to Laughter needs a rewrite because I learned a ton in the first four months of writing stories here. I'm planning to rewrite EoS entirely soon, along with portions of TSJ, BtN, and OHC.

TSJ is almost top-tier, but it has a few issues: its length, the meta-shenanigans are turned up a little too high, the author-tract feel in places, and the early writing isn't as good (as I mentioned). But Back to Normal is definitely not top-tier, and that's where this gets weird. I now direct your attention to the top graph. This is probably the better measure of success because it illustrates when ponies began following me.

While EoS and Laughter brought in some followers, a lot of the followers who joined around those times were actually watching me for TSJ and BtN. Actually, it's quite possible most of my followers are from those two stories alone. And this doesn't make any sense at all. :derpytongue2:

Now, I can understand Twilight's Secret Journal to an extent, because it's a mystery with a lot of complex layers, and it has managed to drag in readers who hate the content but can't stop themselves from reading further (a fact which I admittedly enjoy way too much). It would make more sense if it were porn, though, and it largely isn't. Granted, we're at the turning point in the story where it's starting to become highly sexual, but the first actual sex doesn't appear until the 27th chapter. So it'd have to be the subtle promise of sex, which seems very doubtful. And the really weird part is that the number of followers from TSJ is steadily growing each time I post an update, even though the story is beyond novel-length at this point which presents an obvious barrier to entry.

But Back to Normal? Are you foaling me? :rainbowhuh: Seriously. Back to Normal. Not only is it not that good of a story, it is by far the most hated thing I have ever written. TSJ clocks in second, but BtN still wins by leaps and bounds. It's unlikely you grasp just how upset this story has made about half of its readers. Just to give you an idea of how much hate I've recieved over BtN, most of the comments in the "Trick's Critics" section on my user page are from BtN (they're all from BtN or TSJ, except the last one of course). Ponies have literally threatened to downthumb all my stories because of the content in BtN. I'm actually fairly certain at least a couple of followers who joined from BtN did so in order to see when I post new stories just so they can downthumb them; but still, that can't be more than a hoofful of ponies. None of this explains why I have such a tremendous following from that story. It defies all logic.

Why everypony would follow me for those two stories is anypony's guess. All I can say with certitude is that if you're reading this right now, you have terrible taste in literature. :facehoof:

I've been planning a sequel to BtN for a long time (not until I rewrite it, though), and now I'm starting to feel guilty about the slim possibility of giving my readers what they actually want. You're weird, followers.

I love your stories! And you too!

Shh. Not so loud, silly.

I'm not saying I'm a terrible writer; I'm saying it's odd that out of all the stories I've written, those are the two that have brought me followers. I'm not sure why that is.

Just so you know, Smile is what got me watching you. (And I'd love to see more from that universe!)

That is the other story for which a sequel is in the works.

reading this journal was worth it for that gif

I think I'm a member of the rarest breed imaginable...

I followed you for Flash in the Pan.

I actually loved back to normal, and Twilgiht's (Dusk's?) decision and reasoning is just truly heartbreaking.
I wanted to see more horse feels and TSJ delivered on that and so did Clarity of Darkness.
I still need to read Price of a Smile though.

I'm pretty sure you'll like The Price of a Smile. It's loaded with mystery, feels, and difficult situations.

3473547 Oh yeah, now I'm even more convinced to read it!
That sounds like everything I love!
