AShadowOfCygnus reads "Elpis" · 1:01am Oct 10th, 2015
AShadowOfCygnus recently did a fantastic reading of "Elpis".
This was really interesting for me to listen to, because it let me enjoy the story for the first time.
By the time I've finished a story, I know every word, and I can't see it as anything except words and phrases that I hammered together, maybe against their will. Maybe I can't see the seams, but I remember where they are.
Also, I feel awkward later when I write a story like "Elpis" that has no humility, that tries to fly near the sun. It's bad form. A real writer is supposed to write about middle-class suburban divorcees pondering their disappointing mid-lives.
Enough time has passed now that hearing someone else read it, and read it this well, made it new for me. And what do you know? I like it! It's not a bad little story after all.
I thought real writers were supposed to write about writers having insurmountable dilemmas that are a poorly-disguised stand-in for writers bock. Or possibly about young women discovering sexuality, as a poorly-disguised stand-in for young men discover sexuality...
Or something.
I liked Elpis. It was emotive. (also youtu.be links don't work with the youtube embed thing, just fyi)

See, I have this feeling about stuff I edited for others sometimes, but for stuff I write, it is always the bee's knees :V
Well, often anyway.
