Some musings on life · 11:33am Oct 5th, 2015
Life truly is miraculous.
Even if you set aside the idea of a God(which is an idea I subscribe to, but not everyone does so whatevs), our bodies are comprised of around seven billion billion billion atoms, all of which collectively generate the illusion of solidity. The idea that the grouping of these lifeless pieces of matter produces consciousness, produces awareness, that's amazing.
The interaction of the various sub-atomic particles produces feelings, many of which can't be explained sufficiently by evolution. That same insane drive that causes people to sacrifice themselves for people they don't even know, to start wars on the basis of some principle or another, that drive is proof-positive that the human experience is something more.
We are the only species that tell ourselves stories. We don't just teach survival tips to our young, we make up whole worlds to amuse ourselves and to instill morals.
Some people dismiss morality as artificial, something we should discard as superficial. That is exactly why it's so important. We, as human beings, have come together and decided that life in more than just what we see, hear, touch, smell, and taste. That life is more than just subjective. That there is objective good and objective bad, and that we should hold ourselves to a higher ideal. Successive generations learning empathy and compassion, each trying to be better than the one before.
We may fail sometimes, but screw Yoda. The trying is what's really important.
