Random Thoughts on Writing #1 · 4:22am Sep 29th, 2015
I don't know if this will be a series of thoughts I have on writing as I re-write my story, but, might as well number it.
So, today I sat down and wrote what I feel is a proper ending to the first chapter of Fallout: Equestria - The Ranger of Seamane and I realized something. I had always pushed in the past to get near ten thousand words per chapter, but, honestly there is no need for that. I know within the FO:E community that 10k is the accepted chapter size, but, having read works of Isaac Asimov and Larry Niven I have learned, more isn't really better. Taking this to heart I have really decided on making my word choice more precise and less verbose trying to find the word I want to use. I also have realized I have come a long way from two years ago when I first started writing for myself, and nearing the two year anniversary of when I first put FO:E The Ranger of Seamane up on Fimfiction.
So I honestly feel that I have learned a lot in the past few years of writing. I have learned a bit on grammar, I have learned how to use an and were, and I have learned more or less that more words isn't better, in fact, I feel having a story that is rather long, but has a bunch of small chapters is likely less frightening. I also have realized that what I want to write isn't really one story, but, a series. This revelation also adds a new tool to my arsenal for writing. I can just focus on writing one complete story and seed the arching ideas, places, and sense of time through out it. Another bonus to breaking the story up is I will, hopefully, be able to make it so someone can read any of the 'books' in the series and get a good read out of it.
So what about the return of Moonlight, The Ranger of Seamane? Well, I don't know when I will put the story back up, I think I am going to work on getting a significant amount of it up and try my best to work out the kinks as heavily as possible before it up with the rewritten chapters. Will stuff from the old story show up? Yeah, it will, because I disliked the execution I didn't like kind of ditching Seamane because I was afraid to really sit down and develop it and went to familiar places with visiting other places that other authors had written. I want this to be a more enclosed story nestled in my own corner of Equestria. This of course means there are some rather large changes to some events, but, hey, I feel this is the way for me to do myself and my ideas justice.
Well thanks for listening to my rambling.
Best of luck in this endeavor, I'll be here when its ready to come back.
