Discussion Post - Equestria Girls Series? · 5:11am Sep 28th, 2015
Since Rainbow Rocks we've been hearing the rumors of Equestria Academy, and then Legends of Everfree. The former didn't pan out, we'll see for the latter. After Friendship Games, I feel like the movies can end. They did three, two of them were very good, the third movie had a lot of thematic parallels to the first. The third movie feels like a good way to cap it as a trilogy.
However, I think there's more stories that can be told in this alternate world. What happened to the Sirens? Did any other beings from Equestria cross through the portal over the years? What will happen to Crystal Prep after Friendship Games, particularly the Shadowbolts and Cinch? How will Sunset and Twilight continue to evolve and grow as people? What if some of the other prime universe ponies came over for some reason? Where are the human counterparts of the villains? And of course, the possibility of a human counterpart to Sunset Shimmer being out there somewhere.
Any one of these could serve as the basis for a movie. But that's just it. I rattled off some ideas and a half-dozen movie ideas came of it. So there's two options - explore some of these ideas one film at a time, constricting the plotlines to that three-act 80 minute structure that isn't suiting to all of those ideas anyway.
Or... what if they really did so a full spin-off series in the Equestria Girls universe?
I truly think it could work. There are stories in the Equestria Girls world that should be told, and could probably be told better in 22 minutes each than 80. A series would also allow the human characters to be developed and explored in a different way than their counterparts. Let's face it, most of the cast outside Sunset, Sci Twi, and Flash, are "just like their pony version, but as a human." No, screw that, they can be different. Rainbow Dash the human does not need to be a carbon copy of Rainbow Dash the pony. Like the rebooted Star Trek films, let's be familiar but different and explore these characters in new ways.
I wanna get some real discussion going in the comments, so come and join in - like the idea, hate it, have plot ideas, have plot demands. Let's chat about this.
I'd absolutely love it, but probably for a different reason than most. I feel like for people who don't like EqG, one of the biggest reasons is that they don't like the cliched high school setting, and wish the series could be more original. I'm the exact opposite--do you know how hard I'd mark out for slice-of-life stories about the MLP cast going to high school? I'd be watching that shit morning and night.
Well, if they made an EG series, I'd be out of a job.
But I think it'd be fun, as long as every episode isn't some high school drama....
Again, I'd be out of a job.
I honestly would love more Equestria Girls. But the barrier I see is making decent plot lines besides the ones you mention. And because magic is a thing, (and tuned up to 11 three times so far), I could see minor magical incidents happening causing the main cast to go out and find a solution. This would probably push the boundaries of acceptability, but other than a "buck it, just go with it," it's the only thing I can see that would create an interesting conflict. Because think about it, a typical slice of life wouldn't cut it. We've had 5 seasons of "learning about friendship," and most other Western Animations did a spin (Ben 10, Totally Spies, Kim Possible, Danny Phantom ect), to stay interesting.
3426510 Yeah, I would prefer an EqG series to be more serialized in its storytelling, so we can have proper story arcs. The first season could cover other magical disturbances popping up and the girls trying to contain them. Maybe human Sunset Shimmer is an arc villain for the season researching the magic like Twilight was, her actions bring magic to the attention of the world, and then the later seasons deal with the consequences.
I remember a Rainbow Rocks trailer showed Trixie doing her smoke bomb trick as the narration implied magic was manifesting in the human world. That would be an excellent plotline to explore - humans spontaneously gaining magical powers as a result of the chaos caused by the films releasing magic into the world at large.
I've been craving a slice-of-life/high-school hijinks Equestria Girls series since the first movie. There's real opportunity there and a real market for it.
Oh, and it could do all that other magic and story arcs stuff too. But mostly I'd want it to feel more like Azumanga Daioh.
I'd be all over it at this point. It would help to make the hiatuses between seasons of MLP FiM go faster, and Sunset Shimmer would make for an excellent main character, probably even more interesting than Twilight.
3426861 I think, if they wanted to, they could definitely go full magical girl. FiM has always had elements of that, but never gone all the way.
So, we're basically talking about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, right? But with the Equestrian Portal/other Equestrian exiles replacing a Hellmouth/Demons? That could work.
Giles Sunset
Buffy Rainbow
Willow Fluttershy
Oz Applejack
Cordelia Rarity
Harmony Pinkie
Xander Flash
