Episode Discussion » Equestria Girls - Friendship Games · 2:27pm Sep 27th, 2015

I think this ought to have an episode discussion post, no?

A fun and kinda sweet mmovie poor twilight through.

I was expecting more that the Crystal Prep will look a bit more of sore loser.

But has the Principal did that job is sort of fine to me. So I'm good with this movie.

Indeed. I enjoyed human Twilight and genuinely hated the Crystal Prep Principal.

I really loved Sunset in this movie. She's certainly come a long way since EG1. Wonder what the future holds for the EG universe?

has anyone shipped human world twilight with pony world human twilight, this should be a thing.

The feels at the end were TOO real! Although, I was oddly expecting to see Sci-Twi mKe friends with the other 5 from CP, but moving to CHS works too.:yay:

Also, possible hints to Alicorn Sunset and maybe even her Element.

Bon Bon and Lyra confirmed to be sleeping together.

A specific point I liked in this movie - the villain's defeat. The show is called "Friendship is Magic," yet every major villain so far has been defeated with violence of some sort, usually the Rainbow Friendship Cannon. But finally, we have a villain that's defeated by talking them down. Yes, violence plays a part in the climax, but just to buy time for that talk. I think it demonstrates the show's morals and themes stronger by having a villain who isn't straight evil, just misguided, and their defeat is to reason with them and make them stop.

I, for one, welcome our new Angelic Overlord of Friendship.

3424004 I motion that Sunset Phoenix and Midnight Sparkle come to Equestria and depose Celestia and Luna.

Final boss made me feel like an anime which is a good feeling.

Anyone gonna talk about the after ending ending? Cause.....the foreshadowing there......it's real.

A really great film! I felt the feels, cheered the action scenes (especially the fantastic 'flagship' triathalon) and shed liquid pride when Sunset set aside her suspicion, frustration, anger and, maybe, her subconscious desire to defeat and humiliate Twilight as totally as Twilight's cross-dimensional counterpart had defeated and humiliated her. Instead, she offered a hand of friendship and saved the day. In the process, perhaps, she proved that she finally learnt the lessons Celestia tried to teach her years ago; maybe, at last, she is finally ready.

Indeed, it is notable that the real power on display always was shown in the expression of the Elements of Harmony rather than superior force.

Principal Cinch is a foul harpy; an expression of everything that is malignant in the psychology of human leadership figures from commerce, politics, religion and, yes, education. The realisation, at the end: that she had been beaten and that, for all the influence she boasted of before Twilight, she was helpless before the unity of the Wondercolts and Shadowbolts was a bitter one indeed. I couldn't help an evil chuckle. She's finished, of course; the Shadowbolts will spread the word of her failure and mistakes and no student at Crystal Prep will ever respect her again.

Then we have the end with Twilight transferring to Canterlot High and becoming the newest member of the Equestria Girls.

If you can, get the uncut Canadian Family Channel version of the film. The full end titles sequence and song is lovely and funny in all the right places.

This is not the end, nor is it the beginning of the end. It is, instead, the end of the beginning. Magic is unlocked, and its mysteries unveiled, the Seven have been gathered and now the future and Destiny await them.

I still haven't watched it yet (I'm gonna watch it a few minutes later), but do you guys think there's going to be a 4th EG movie? I don't want the franchise to end that quickly :fluttershysad:

Yes, no?

*checks internet* I probably won't be able to see it for another week or so.

3424034 I think that it should have human Sunset.

3424038 Indeed. But when should we expect it to be announced? When was Rainbow Rocks or the Friendship Games announced after their prequel?

3424003 "The best way to defeat an enemy is to make them your friend" ~Sensei Wu, from Ninjago.

Loved the movie. The animation was crazy good.

3424019 Not Midnight Twinkle?

3424058 Official name is Midnight Sparkle, from the merch.

3423990 I think someone said something about a spinoff show called "Equestria Academy" that focuses on this world.

3424045 about six to nine months.

That 'Unleash the Magic' song had me wide eyed in terror. Holy shit that was creepy.

I think this ought to have an episode discussion post, no?

I thought so, too. Thank you!

3424070 It was also catchy as all hell, though. As any good villain song ought to be.

That was amazingly epic. I cannot believe how good that movie actually was. It was fantastic and I'm actually sorry I missed five minutes of the second event the first time I watched it. It was the first EG movie that I actually felt mad that I missed even a sliver of the action. And don't even get me started on that epic climax.

The interesting thing is that Abacus Cinch is a major villain -- she suffers a setback but is not decisively defeated -- who knew that magic was possible even BEFORE she had any direct on-screen evidence. Who is she? What does she really want? And note: she has no (obvious) analogue in Equestria, nor does she seem to be working for one. Though, given where she is, and who she is able to manipulate, there are two obvious possibilities.

It was pretty damn good. I'm not sure if I'd say I like it better than Rainbow Rocks, but I definitely enjoyed it a lot.

But I'm reeeaally curious about the time loop ordeal that Pony!Twilight apparently got stuck in. It was probably a throwaway gag, but I'd still like to see it. :twilightsheepish:

The movie was nice, but I seriously hope that the version shown on TV was "cut down" in some way, meaning that there are a few extra (perhaps needed) scenes in the full version. The climax was a little rushed, the HuMane 5’s expressing of their Element powers was almost as forced as the pilot part 2 at times (looking at you, AJ), Spike starting (and continuing) to talk was glossed over about as much as Olaf apparently being alive in Frozen (“You’re alive?” “Uh, I think so?”), and it’s honestly giving the first movie a run for its money for number of things that weren’t explained or made no sense, though at least this time those were mostly in reference to an inanimate object as opposed to an actual character, so that’s sort of an improvement. All in all, I still like Rainbow Rocks better, but I will withhold final judgment until I know if there is a "full version" that explains stuff better.

And now on to the stuff I did like:
-Sci/tech licks magic in this world! Take that!
-Motorcycle races? Let’s Go, Kamen Riders!
-That pendant of Human Twilight’s is a neat idea, too bad we never learned much about it or how it works.
-Most to all of the songs were great.
-We finally get a decent idea of who knows how much about all this magic stuff: Canterlot High is an isolated oasis of knowing about it in the rest of the city’s desert of...not knowing about it.
-That scene where everyone tells Principal Cinch to “yes, go and tell the school board, they’d love to hear about all of the magic students with wings, portals to other dimensions, and talking dogs”.

Did anyone miss it? Don't worry; I gotcha covered!

It was a great way to (in my opinion) end this trilogy of controversy. It definitely offered a ton of closure that settled issues with the first two, and finished Sunset's character arc pretty nicely. I especially liked the teacher-student aspect Sunset and Human Twilight now have.

3424087 Likely, that's from the Season 5 finale.

My favorite bits:

—Flash Sentry tries so hard, you guys. Sorry buddy, no main character status for you.

—Evil Twilight! All she wanted was knowledge, is that so wrong? (Not unlike a certain dwarf from a certain anime)

—The blue girl who kept explicitly telling Twilight how terrible she was at life.

—The transformations of Twilight and Sunset. The anthro-ness actually looked really cool for once.

3424070
I'm especially attracted by that chanting chorus.

Good movie. Songs are better from the first two. Plus Didn't that portal get closed to Equestria? So does that mean Equastria Twilight is stuck there? Needs answers. Overall nice movie.

You think that's good? In the uncut credits (shown in the Canadian première), there is a shot of the three alicorn Principals pigging out on cake! They look kind of shocked that Photo Finish is there and it looks so much like the classic 'cake-eating Celestia' fan-art that it has to be a 'Slice of Life'-style shout-out to the fandom!

3424129 basically.

I only had two real issues.

I don't think Cinch got quite enough karmic payback for her actions. Also, I think that a certain male character was criminally underused, as usual.

Said male character being Shining Armor.

3424117

Thought it was just Sunset's magical ability to go to Equestia. At the end everyone got their magic back? Thank you btw. Now have an excuse to watch the movie again. (Confirming plotline, or ignoring plotline as necessary)

3424122
How come you Canadians get all the good stuff?

3424140 Yw i need to watch again too:twilightsmile:
