    What's On The Palette

If I lapse occasionally or even frequently into bouts of site-wide silence, it's because I'm working. Or, at least, trying to. Time slips by so quickly these days, that I'll sometimes feel like I am working, only to look up and realize I haven't actually made as much progress as I thought.

    The Thing Is

Every now and then, I get to stick my head up and realize - it isn't so bad out here, doing what I do, or more accurately, believing I am doing what I said I'd do.

Every now and then that voice that taunts and jeers, that tells me that this won't mean anything or pan out the way I want it to, has to harrumph and look away.

Writing is an Act of Faith

TLDR: in which I do some somewhat philosophical ramblings about writing, because it's late, it's been a tough week, and I just need to get some words out. The power of the stream-of-consciousness essay should not be understated, even if it's completely counter to the premise of an essay.

I've long held that writing is an act of faith, if not the product of it.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Writing - A Small Update

(At this point, maybe every blog will have a title referencing some literary work, for funsies)

Hi, everyone! I thought I'd drop by with a quick update as to what I've been working on. Nothing too fancy - I'm not good at making a blog look like that - but I figure this might interest some of you.

My Thoughts on Equestria Girls: The Friendship Games · 12:29pm Sep 27th, 2015

Well, that was an interesting experience, to say the least.

As this is a high school kind of trope, I had to look to this film as such. I am not a big fan of high school kind of movies, as I have felt that they can become cliche, but I can stomach watching them from time to time.

So, then, how did EQG:TFG stand out to me?

Well, to put it simply...

Yep, I think this did a great job as a movie. Though it just barely surpasses Rainbow Rocks, it had a fairly decent storyline and pretty good songs that rivaled the second installment. This movie certainly improved Sunset Shimmer's character as well, which was probably one of my favorite parts of this film—and perhaps series. Her character arc was completed beautifully! Instead of being the "get-all-the-sympathy" kind of character in RR, she's now an independent, able, willing, and strong character all on her own! She still has to contend with old feelings of guilt; but she makes up for it with her willingness to do better.

Twilight Sparkle of the human world was just as interesting. We knew she was going to Crystal Prep, and that the school was pretty douchbag material, and I couldn't help but feel bad for her throughout the film. Cadance and Shining Armor were introduced, though they don't seem like a couple; and Shining did come off as kind of a dick. But poor Twilight; succumbing to peer pressure, from her fellow students and her bitch of a principal, she nearly became EQG1's Sunset Shimmer during the end; turned bitter and power/knowledge hungry.

It could be argued that this Twilight, and Sunset, were what Equestria's Twilight could have been, had no intervention occurred. She might have sought power, or knowledge, under Celestia, had Friendship not been introduced. This contrast and parallel is something that I have grown to love in these mediums.

And that ending! Oh man, that ending. Sunset went from misguided villain, to tentative pupil, to teacher to Human Twilight! This kind of character transformation is something that I think is absolutely amazing. Sunset has Human Twilight's experience and feelings, so she'd make a great teacher when it comes to Friendship.

Pacing felt a little off at points, but it was quickly remedied. Though I did feel that we could have seen more of the Games, but the lack of them didn't detract from the overall movie.

Also, it was great to see Flash Sentry get spurred by Human Twilight. Though I am not an Anti-Flash, it was still funny to see him get all confused. It's a shame that they didn't give it some closure; but oh well.

So let's give it an overall grade (I guess because why not?):

Story: (in high school tropes) 8
Characters: 8.5
Animation: 9
Pacing: 7.8

Overall: 8.3/10

In short, a decent movie. I suggest all of you to check it out. You may find that you somewhat enjoyed it after all.

AND THAT END CREDITS SCENE THOUGH! Holy hell, looks like we've got a glimpse to Season 5's finale (as I've suspected). Time travel is gonna happen, guys. I guarantee it.

(Of course, that would make EQG canon to the show, but unnecessary to the overarching plot. But that's not a bad thing: I love these crossovers within canon!)

I seriously hope that EQG will not get canon. It must stay something of his own.

3424808 I'm afraid that Miss McCarthy has confirmed that it is canon.

BUT WAIT

"Canon," but not in conventional terms. Canon implies that it is part of a necessary viewing. You don't need to watch EQG to understand the main MLP:FIM universe. As it is technically an alternate universe, it is not necessary to be a part of that universe to understand this one. Rest assured, then, that it is not Canon in terms of what we define as "canon."

Personally, I feel that the EQG is over. The third movie provided enough closure to keep me satisfied, so I'm fine with only three. Knowing Hasbro, though, they'll likely milk it for everything. Oh, well. Curse of the Consumer.

By the way, did you get my last PM?

3424860 She said many contradicting stuff of EQG, passing by being not canon to be canon to be what the viewer to decide. To me EQG is not canon and I beg for everyone up there to keep it that way.
Yes, Hasbro will milk it, at cost of sacrifcing the main show.
Can you tell me that there is no FlashLight in this movie?
Yes, I've readed it.

3424936 No FlashLight. He gets burned pretty badly by Human Twilight. On my soul, I promise.

3424961 Well, that's one big pros that I will give to this movie... and the only one.
