    Episode Re-Review: Triple Threat

Now it's back to FiM, and back to Season 7. Season 7 finally seemed to find its footing at the very end of its first half, with the back to back successes of "Discordant Harmony" and "The Perfect Pear". The same could not be said for Equestria Girls, which debuted three specials meant to be combined into a full length movie, but only one of which ("Movie Magic") was any good. Still, Hasbro bit

Special Re-Review: Equestria Girls: Mirror Magic (Magical Movie Night, Part 3)

So it is that we come to the third and final act of this special, and what at the very least counts as the black sheep of the lot in the form of "Mirror Magic". Compared to the two previous specials, this one directly focuses on its villain, albeit one we've seen before. But hey, Queen Chrysalis' big return in "To Where and Back Again" seemed to be received quite well all things considered. And

Special Re-Review: Equestria Girls: Movie Magic (Magical Movie Night, Part 2)

Despite this and "Dance Magic" and "Mirror Magic" being made part of the same story, different writers penned all three specials. This one was written by Noelle Benvenuti, who had been absent from the writing scene since the lackluster "Made in Manehattan" that we now know was changed from its original planned story involving Flim and Flam. A shame, rather. But more likely, real world problems

Special Re-Review: Equestria Girls: Dance Magic (Magical Movie Night, Part 1)

I'm going by release date for the specials I didn't cover during my initial re-reviews back in 2021, even though we now know when some of the specials are actually supposed to take place. In any case, this special is one of three that, when combined together, equals the total run time of a full length Equestria Girls movie. From here on out, Hasbro would not greenlight another movie, but after

Made in Manehattan Review · 6:17pm Sep 26th, 2015

So, we've got our third and final Rarity episode for the month, and this time she's getting paired up with Applejack once again. With Noelle Benventui, the writer of "Maud Pie" in the driver's seat, did Rarity manage to pull out another smash hit like "Rarity Investigates" or a more meh episode like "Canterlot Boutique"?

Well, let's find out.

We begin with a first for our loveable egghead, Twilight. She's bored, of reading!

She's broken out of her bordem when Rarity and Applejack reveal that they've been summoned by the map, but Twilight is unhappy when she is once again left out. She reassures Rarity and Applejack that they can handle the friendship problem, and steals Spike's comic book so it looks like she has something to do. Of course, we all know how she really feels.

After a comment about how they'll have to miss the Sisterhooves Social (setting up for next week's episode) Rarity and Applejack travel to Manehattan, and we find out why Applejack's time with the Oranges was so brief. She's just not cut out for the hustle and bustle of city life. Especially when it involves the sterotypical big city jerks, which I have to say, we had our fill of them in "Rarity Takes Manehattan", and by now that sterotype has been beaten into the ground with a lead pipe.

Rarity and Applejack try their best, but it seems they can't find a friendship problem. Rarity actually takes a page from Lucy's notebook, and sets up a stand offering help with friendship problems, it doesn't work.

Just as they're about to give up, however, the two intercept a flyer from Coco Pommel. She's trying to resurrect an old theater production to get the neighborhood acting friendly again, but she needs volunteers. Luckly, Applejack and Rarity quickly agree to help. And we all know how much Coco Pommel could use some helping hooves.

Rarity works with Coco on the costumes for the performers, while Applejack tries to fix up the park where the play will be held. But despite her best efforts, she only ends up fixing a few things, and damaging her hat in the process. It seems like Rarity and Applejack are in over their heads, and that the map was mistaken in sending them alone, as the stage collapses. Fortunately, no one is hurt.

After a bit of moping around, Rarity and Applejack decide to try again. This time, they set up a performance on a street corner, attracting a huge crowd. By the time the play is over, everyone is acting much more friendly, and they agree to pitch in and do small things to fix up their community. A really mature moral, both for the target audience, and for older fans. Sometimes, you've got to approach a problem practically. Instead of trying to fix everything at once, focus on small projects, and use them as a stepping stone.

Rarity and Applejack prepare to head home (after Rarity throws out Applejack's old hat and gets her a new one), but Rarity gets distracted stopping somepony from buying an ugly hat. And Applejack just smiles.

And that's the story, so what do I think of the episode? Well, it tried, really it did. It just didn't try hard enough. It relayed mainly on the New Yorker sterotype, which is a very bland sterotype in today's world because of how much it's been used. Rarity, though still in character, was a bit more distracted, getting carried away with small details that ultimately didn't help (though she still managed to help Coco with the costumes). Applejack worked well when she could play off of Rarity's antics, but on her own she just wasn't compelling enough to hold together scenes. Thankfully, those scenes were few. I'm assuming Noelle thought that the return of Coco would cover up this episode's faults, perhaps because she was writing this while her mother was sick, and thus distracted. But this doesn't really have the same emotional appeal that "Maud Pie" had. In terms of Rarijack episodes, it doesn't hit the comedic high of "Simple Ways", or the emotional high of "Sisterhooves Social", but it also doesn't hit the annoying lows of "Look Before You Sleep" and the RariJack plot of "Trade Ya". It's a par for the course RariJack episode, that just doesn't have enough to make it stand out. In the end, I give it an A, putting it above "Tanks for The Memories", but below "Canterlot Boutique" which had more to offer, and a stronger ending. This Rarity triology in terms of airdates, was alright, but it probably wouldn't have hurt to spread them out a bit. Still, for the first character to get three episodes in a row, Rarity did pretty good.

Next week should be interesting, we've got "Brotherhooves Social", in which Big Macintosh competes in the Sisterhooves Social with Apple Bloom. But first, we've got the upcoming "Friendship Games" coming on tonight at 8. Sadly, I have to work, and I doubt I'll get off in time to see it. So I have it DVRing, and should be able to get the review out either tomorrow or Monday. I can only hope that "Equestria Girls" is finally ready to stand on its own legs.

The experience I had with this episode was amongst the most negative I've ever encountered with an episode of the program. This had one of the most promising premises: buddies going to the namesake of where my father works as an accountant and where I was born. Unfortunately, like most mass media targeted at female children these days, the last thing it wants to fully understand is...NEW YORK!

Oh, well, I've had the pleasure of seeing many films about New York and its residents over the years. A lot of them understood New Yorkers better. Their films knew that New York was anything BUT all Broadway-obsessed or all Fashion-obsessed all jerk-laden. If my father saw the thing (and he's 80!) he'd feel insulted and would be enraged at the fact that the children's entertainment industry, regarding portrayals of New York, has still learned nothing from filmmakers like Woody Allen or Martin Scorsese (probably because they don't think their movies are for kids, which is slightly ridiculous; hell, try to name a single Woody Allen movie that's been rated R. He's done precious few R-rated films, and little girls aren't allowed to see those, right?)

In fact, the message presented, while buried in these stereotypes, is the only redeeming quality of an otherwise dreadful episode.

This one definitely calls for a re-write which I can work with you on; it's in desperate need of one.

3421535 Eh, I don't think it warrants a rewrite. The sterotypes weren't bad, they were just bland and overdone.

Well it was really cool to see Coco again. :raritystarry:

Whilst not exactly an amazing episode, it wasn't horrible either. It's decent enough, but I don't think I would watch it again regularly.

Eh, this was just an okay episode.
I definitely think it was the weakest episode of the trilogy (with last week's being the strongest, mostly by virtue of having Rainbow there for Rarity to bounce off of).
Heck, I don't think it was one of the better episodes of the season so far.

And I still think having three Rarity episodes in a row was too much. Heck, even if it had been three RD episodes in a row, I'd say it would have been too much.
The only character that I think deserves three episodes in a row is Scootaloo, and that's because we don't know all that much about her.

3421883 I do agree, that they probably should've saved this episode for a week or two. Maybe swap it around with "Brotherhooves Social". The only reason "Rarity Investigates" aired after "Canterlot Boutique" was because "Scare Master" was a Halloween episode.

3422945 Honestly, I don't think even a week's separation from episode to episode would have been enough.
Two or three maybe.

3423292 They probably could've bumped up "What About Discord?", "Crusaders of The Lost Mark", or "The One Where Pinkie Knows", all of them sound more interesting.

3423295 Definitely.
The one I'm most excited about is "Crusaders of the Lost Mark", since it seems like we'll finally get some actual development for DT. And after 5 seasons (although this season had a surprising lack of her (and I'm not counting the one from Bloom and Gloom, since that wasn't even the real her)... and that seems odd), it's about time.
Heck, maybe she'll actually become likable.
