When noncanon comics give you ideas.... · 3:06am Sep 23rd, 2015
I've now acquired my third volume of the spin-off comics of MLP:FiM. My latest acquisition is the omnibus of the "Fiendship is Magic" comics covering the antagonists Sombra, Tirek, The Sirens, Nightmare Moon, and Chrysalis. Some of the stories I like more than others. But if you want a thorough review of the stories, I know there are better ones out there than I can come up with.
No. Right now, I have to spit out the idea that latched on as I read the first story which is about Sombra. On one page, we have the young Sombra and his only friend, Radiant Hope, seeking to the Crystal Palace to view the Crystal Heart. Upon viewing themselves in the Crystal they see their future selves: Radiant Hope as a Princess and Sombra as a shadowy nothing.
Sombra did end up becoming what he feared. Radiant Hope was not trapped in the Crystal Empire. What if she really did go to Canterlot and complete her training under the princess(es) and did become a princess herself?
Why can't Prince Blueblood be Radiant Hope's descendant?

A slightly different track but people comment about Princess Amore's treatment of Sombra. Well, has anyone else thought of the fact that Twilight and Cadance are reading his diary and people tend to be very biased when they write in something that personal? There was no way that he was going to be impartial in his own diary. I'd love to see a story that is a "historical" account of what happened.
It was a great series. It was fun back in April getting a new issue every week!
The Sombra issue offered a lot of fanfic fodder. If you've got an idea, go for it!
(The Tirek story was kind of... pointless though, right?)

The Sombra story helped flesh out a character that needed it. I never hated or disliked him like a lot of people that watched those episodes. The Sirens' story was somewhat interesting but I found it far too silly (and annoying) how Starswirl kept trying to fight them on a ground that they clearly favor rather than going about it with his own skill set. *rolls eyes* Nightmare Moon was interesting because it showed she was still active even after her banishment but I didn't really care about the Nyx. But I did find that story a little boring. Aside from the sheer size of the Idiot Ball Twilight held at the end of the Chrysalis story, I like the one featuring the Changling Queen. Seriously, Twilight? You could've done half a dozen different things to get her a book without leaving. Put a short term spell on it that reduces it's size, ordered a guard to go buy another book, etc.
The Tirek story is more subtle than the rest. It shows a person that has always had his own ambition and goals and doesn't care who he hurts to achieve them. But it did leave a lot of loose ends and things that should've been covered.
