...or Rarity Holmes: The Adorably Chic Private Detective.
This was a fun episode that I really enjoyed. It seems the writers are stepping up their game!
And Rarity was so adorable in this episode.
Spoilers!
First: Rarity is freaking adorable in this. It's about time we got to see her in more of her outfits. Keep the costumes coming!
Did I mention she was adorable in this?
Anyway, this episode was really predictable, and I'm sure most of us knew how it would end pretty early on. But they did a good job on the details of the crime. The Devil is in the details. But it went freaking noir on us, complete with the character's internal monologue (most of the time), and it worked. Rarity comes across as a classy 1940s dame, and the black and white shots are artsy but simply amazing animation.
There's also some great character development I have to thank the writers for too. In earlier seasons, I feel Rarity would've sooner suspected Rainbow Dash or been very suspicious of her, seeing as Rainbow had motive and opportunity, and it just seems like something she'd do. However, in this episode it's not even a question for her: Rainbow Dash was innocent, and Rarity went out of her way to prove it.
This was a very fun and cute episode, perhaps leaning a little closer to style over substance; however, as I mentioned above, there's some depth to be found.
And now some of Rarity's cutest moments:
She's so cute with that giant hat. Wait a minute... I see what they did there.
This ship could work after this episode.
That face! That face! That dangerous face!
I love this shot right here.
Darling!
She could charm the armor right off him.
I'm a fan of the black and white, but she looks good in color. Rainbow's face says it all.
This!
And this!
Wow, I uploaded a lot more cute Rarity than I had originally planned. I hope no one died of a heart-attack while scrolling through the screenshots.
I loved the silhouetted shot of B&W Rares too. To quote the greater deity of making really awesome games, "It just works." Seriously I'm amazed that the animators were able to make something so beautiful and artistic.
Spitfire's mom looks like a dude... a little bit...
I loved the constant costume updates too. Rares doesn't always make really good clothes, but when she does, she needs to wear them more. I was concerned a little at first from a second Rarity episode in a row, but I'm now really excited to see the rest of season five-point-five.
3407384 I want more Noir Rarity!
Yeah well I want more Distressed Damsel Dashie.
3407709 Then it's decided! We shall write a Rarity P.I. noir series similar to that one noir Captain Picard likes to visit in the holodeck.
3407741 "The Dame was trouble. I knew better than ta get mixed up with a pony like her, but somethin about the look in her eyes kept me from keepin a level head.... that or it was her fabulous mane! I mean can you imagine coordinating an outfit with a six colored mane?"
Applejack let out a heavy sigh, she was loyal to the core for her employer, but sometimes that filly just ended up talking nonsense. "Ah don't rightly know, Boss, but maybe we can skip yer, um... 'internal' monologue while our client is standin right here."
Because Detective Rarity will definitely need muscle so she gets A.J. I can also see Pinkie as a snitch, Twilight as Rarity's old partner from the police force, and Fluttershy as the evil mastermind... if it ends up being comedy anyway. Oh and if we humanized things then Spike can be Rarities faithful hound that she borrowed(stole) from Twilight.
