The Hump That Every Fanfic Writer Reaches · 1:08pm Sep 20th, 2015

It's nice to reach that point where I don't have to constantly post a story to get random likes, favs and the occasional comment asking why don't I update. I've been enjoying a fifteen-minute retirement these last couple of days.

Logging in, "Oh, somebody read X and faved. That's nice."

Logging out, "Now I know how my favorite authors, who don't update or post a new story, feel. Content."

Logging back in, "I might post something today."

Logging back out, "Ehh, this is as good as I'm gonna be. Might as well leave it as is."

I don't consider Tomorrow is Another Day as a new story because I wrote it in a brain-flushing slump. Also to reintroduce myself to writing Applejack. The only reason why it isn't a one-shot is because I couldn't come up with a finishing emotional beat to wrap up the story. I might come up with it. I might not.

I do have some fanfic ideas I want to write out but I can't imagine them being very good. And I know that. I'm usually cool with that. But it's like I've never written a story before. I got some stage fright in my fingers.

This is my hump.

Here's a motivation pic to make me feel better.

Sure, that's exactly what's happening here.

But it's all struggle. The more you improve, the more aware of the mistakes you make.

There's this wave of nausea that hits when you even think of writing or posting anything else because you know that it's not 'good'. Then you can't even trust your ideal of 'greatness' because what is that. It shifts as you get better.

So then, that's your hump. In order to get to Nirvana, you must fall to your depravity in general fandom bullcrap.

You must.
