... Destiny was a gem covered in shit until now. Interesting world and gameplay marred by the near none existent in-game narrative, bizarre leveling system (remember the "forever 29" thing?), an extreme lack of content, horribly unbalanced and unrewarding PvP, etc. TTK reverses all that: interesting onscreen narrative, characters you actually invest in (without breaking into the grimoire), lots and lots of content (the new quest system in particular), a complete overhaul of the leveling system, and a newly rebalanced PvP. The only thing they didn't fix was the lack of reward for PvP (long-term that is; short term there is the new PvP Quests, but that won't last long), and that was a bit of an accident (Bungie wanted to stop people from burning through all the content, so Crucible doesn't reward Legendary Marks so they can't be hyper farmed that way, when they really should have just lowered how many were rewarded compared to the old Crucible Marks).

While I'm happy for this, I'm also pissed. Year One was basically a payed beta test. We're only getting a great game now because we payed them so we could do their job.

3398214 Year One was heavily streamlined from the original vision. They had a good thing going, but it suffocated horribly from executive hubris as the heads began cutting more and more content over concerns that the game might be too complex. In the ensuing drama, the head writer left, and from there it was a mad scramble to throw everything together and make it presentable in time for deadlines, including a complete overhaul of the story -- they completely rewrote it into something more generic that didn't require as many cinematics or environmental set-pieces, and thus was easier to develop for. The internal builds in 2013 were bigger, more cohesive, and more fully-featured than the game we got at release, but we won't ever go back to them -- too many of the underlying gameplay systems have been irrevocably changed, and it would mean retconning tons of the new stuff to reinstate the old ways.

To use MLP as an analogy: pre-release was S1/S2, Year One was S3/S4, and TTK is S5. Similar to MLP, while TTK is doing a lot to redeem the catastrophe that was Year One, it will never be the same as it was pre-release. Joe Staten was their Lauren Faust, and when he left, everything fell apart.

Putting aside the fact that I think Season 1 is a touch overrated (it suffered from a lot of boring setup and Early Installment Weirdness), I agree with this analogy overall. To further it, I'd say Season 3 represents Vanilla/The Dark Below. That is, crap aside from a scant few gems (the Raids for Destiny, episodes like Sleepless in Ponyville for S3). Season 4 then is House of Wolves. That is, lots of good ideas mired by crap (loved the new bounty system and the fact that there were actually characters for once, but dear Lord did the Endgame suck, and Season 4 had great episodes like Pinkies Pride alongside what may be the single worst FiM episode ever produced: Rainbow Falls).

Though, based on cutscenes and gameplay that I've seen online, it looks pretty wicked.

Heh, the story changes drastically once you get into the Grimoire. My friend occasionally just starts reading them aloud at me.

Taken King was a lot of fun, though since certain quests seem made for fireteam play, I struggle at times due to not having Taken King compatriots on PS4.

I'm personally excited to see where they continue to take it, but I'm glad I didn't by it off the shelf Day One.
