Northwest of Canterlot, perched high in the boughs of an ancient oak tree, there is a city of soaring towers and deep shadows.

Illya Leonov Reads One of My Stories! · 6:32pm Sep 14th, 2015

Y'all remember how I wrote a tribute to Cold in Gardez's "Lost Cities" a couple weeks back[1]? And if you follow Illya Leonov's fanfic readings on YouTube, you may be aware that he also did a series of readings for the original.

Well, shortly after I published "Keskiyönnon", the stentorian Mr. Leonov approached me about doing an audio reading on that as well. I was, of course, quite pleased by this! He's got a wonderful voice—some people describe Scotch whiskey as liquid gold, both of which seem like good synesthetic descriptors of how it feels to listen to him read—and he's covered a number of stories by some of my favorite authors. We talked a little bit about pronunciation and lingual bases for made-up words, and then he ran off to do his thing.

And then[2] this morning I received a PM wherein Mr. Leonov informed me that his recording is now live! So I figured I ought to share it with you all, since I know some of you quite enjoy hearing descriptive prose read in a way that evokes old aristocrats sitting around in wood-paneled rooms, smoking cigars. I have to admit, I kind of fancy that myself.

So here you go, have an audio recording of one of my stories! I hardly ever get these, and let's just say I'm pretty excited by this!

"Keskiyönnon" – as read by Illya Leonov.

[1] Or more than a couple weeks, if you count the writeoff version.

[2] After, I'll admit it, checking his YouTube page more than is perhaps seemly, thinking "Isitupyet? Isitupyet!?"

That man is a community treasure to be sure.

Someone needs to buy him the quality of microphone he deserves. I'm not remotely an audiophile, but when that kind of voice is interrupted by the realization that I can tell his microphone is lowish quality... it's a tragedy!

One does what one can with what one has. I think I get a reasonably good sound with my equipment. The authors seem satisfied with my work and taking care to make the writer's words sound as they wish them to is my foremost aim.

And it's for exactly these reasons I think it'd be amazing if you somehow got better equipment! Considering what you can already do with what you have, imagine if you had even better! Anyway, my words were intended to be primarily sympathetic and supportive, truly only the most constructive of "criticism."

And of course authors are satisfied with your work: your voice is quite awesome, a true resource.

I appreciate your kind words.
