Something comes to mind after watching the 'Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep' episode. This idea has been in my head for a while now and I'm glad to take this time to talk about it.
Can an earth pony ascend to alicornhood?
The answer is yes.
The proof is Cadance's small background in the Twilight and the Crystal Heart Spell book. I won't go into great detail because of spoilers. All I can say is Cadance was a Pegasus before ascending to alicornhood. I find this fascinating because it shows that non-unicorn ponies have the potential to create new magic. If a Pegasus like Cadance can achieve this, then why not an earth pony?
A earth pony turned alicorn would be great to see or hinted in the show because it would make the earth ponies more favorable towards the fans and complete the harmony of the three races. With that in mind, what new magic can an earth pony create?
