    Darkening Summary

As I promised, here is a brief summary of The Darkening for anyone who would like to continue the story but would rather not spend the time reading the 69k word story again. Now if you haven't read the story, then please don't read this summary, it is going to cover all of the plot points very quickly, and you will get nothing from it but confusion and whiplash. You can catch the summary just

    The Darkening is Back!

I told you it wasn't dead! Yeah, I saw it when those of you placed it in your "dead" and "graveyard" bookshelves, and I gotta say, each one of those hurt my heart a bit, but I get it. I haven't updated the story since April 2019!

The Darkening isn't Dead, I Swear!

So, I know I haven't really done anything here in nearly two years, but I just wanted to tell anyone who may still care that I haven't given up on The Darkening yet. The truth is, I've been in a bit of a funk since before posting chapter 7. My depression came back, harder than it has in over a decade, and with it came the old feelings of failure. Every time I sat down to write, this little

    The Darkening: Chapter 7

Finally, it's done! This chapter gave me a lot of grief. I wrote the Twilight section over a dozen times easily, and honestly, I nearly gave up at one point. But I didn't, and thanks to a comment from my newer pre-reader, Zodiacspear, it turned out even better than I'd hoped. So look for chapter 7 to be posted next Wednesday around

    The Darkening: Chapter 6

Chapter 6 is ready to go and will be posted next Wednesday. Chapter 7 has really given me a lot of trouble, but I think I've finally just about worked it out, and I'm hoping the next portion of it will come along much quicker. Anyway, I hope you all had a wonderful time over the holidays, and I also hope you'll look forward to chapter 6 after checking out the excerpt after the page break.

Story Excerpt · 5:04pm Aug 26th, 2015

Alright guys, I'm very sorry for how long it is taking me to get another chapter of Better than the Best out. I've spent so much time away from the story that now I'm having difficulty finding the same flow as I write, which is causing me to write and delete scenes over and over again. However, I feel that I have finally gotten back on track, and with my oldest daughter back in school, I have a lot more writing time. Since you've all gone so long without any new material, I've decided to give you a small excerpt from the chapter (which will simply be titled Event Two), so that you can get a bit of an idea of how Rainbow is doing, as well as a look at a slightly reformed Gilda. You'll find it after the break.

"Well, think about it," Nasir advised. Suddenly he grinned and began to wave. "There they are."

Twilight turned to see Krystle and Rainbow on the ground. As they drew near, Krystle began hopping up and down.

"Guess what, guess what!" Krystle cried. "I beat Rainbow! I won!"

"You did?!" Nasir replied with exaggerated enthusiasm. "But she's so fast! That's amazing!"

Without warning, Krystle jetted into the air and began to zigzag wildly as she recounted the intense race. As Nasir oohed and aahed at the most thrilling parts of her tale, Twilight trotted over to Rainbow.

"You definitely made her day." Twilight smiled. "It was nice of you to let her win."

Rainbow scratched her head and turned away. "Yeah, well, the kid is fast, and she had such a look of determination on her face, you know? It kinda reminded me of Scoots when she attempts one of her jumps, and I didn't want to see her lose."

"Yo, Dash," cried a voice from directly above. Glancing up, they found Lightning Dust smirking down at them. "Did I hear that Griffon right? Did you seriously lose to that little pipsqueak?" She snickered. "I knew you weren't anything special."

Rainbow's ears flattened. "No. I didn't—" Hastily, Twilight smacked Rainbow in the back of the head with her wing. "Ow, Twilight, what the hay?"

Wordlessly, Twilight gestured with her head at Krystle, who was still hovering above and staring at them.

"Um...I mean...yeah, Krystle beat me," Rainbow said. "She's an incredible flier."

"Whatever." Lightning rolled her eyes. "You're pathetic."

Just as Rainbow was opening her mouth to speak, Gilda swooped in beside Lightning. Looking at the two of them, she asked, "What's up?"

Lightning snorted. "Rainbow here just lost a race to that little Griffon."

"Really?" Gilda said with obvious surprise. She glanced down at Rainbow and saw her grinding her teeth. "Uh, Light? Don't you think that maybe Rainbow didn't..."

Twilight caught Gilda's eye and quickly shook her head, then pointed at Krystle while pretending to scratch her ear.

"Uh, she...didn't expect her to be such a great flier," Gilda quickly corrected. "It's easy to underestimate someone so small, you know?"

A dark look passed over Lightning's face. "Why are you suddenly making up excuses for her?"

"She's not, Lightning," Rainbow retorted. "She's just pointing out the obvious. That's plain to everypony here, except for you." Her eyes narrowed. "That's why you'd never make a good Wonderbolt."

"And you would?" Lightning clenched her jaw. "At least I didn't lose to a six year old!"

"Hey!" Krystle interjected indignantly. "I'm eight!"

"Krystle has awesome skills," Rainbow said, "and I'd bet every bit I've got that she's gonna kick your tail in this competition."

Lightning laughed. "You're kidding, right? There's no way I'd ever lose to that stinking little brat!"

Twilight stepped forward and glared at Lightning. "You need to stop this. Now." She indicated Krystle, who had landed and was hugging her father's foreleg. "You're upsetting her."

"So?"

"Light, quit being an idiot," Gilda suddenly interrupted. "She's a princess, and you're belittling a kid right in front of her."

This seemed to give Lightning pause. She gazed at Twilight, and then Krystle before returning her attention to Gilda. Finally, she turned away and mumbled, "Let's go."

As Lightning flew away, Gilda cast a quick glance at all of them. "Sorry," she said, rubbing the back of her neck and smiling sheepishly, and then she hastily followed Lightning to the other side of the field.

Ooh! Can't wait! On my phone so I can't link the video clip, so I'll just say it.
