Muffins at the End of the Universe, a writer's companion volume one · 4:15pm Aug 20th, 2015
So what is Muffins at the End of the Universe? It is a series, which came about because of a number of ideas converging, as is often the case. First of all I wanted to write a comedy involving Twilight Sparkle in which the princess of friendship is taken away from her friends, and cut off and isolated somewhere where her status as a princess means nothing. I was just curious to see how she would react (and I guess I'm kind of evil that way).
I needed somepony for her to bounce her frustrations off, so enter Trixie, who is in many ways the perfect foil for Twilight. I interpret her as being like Twilight, except she is the Twilight who failed. Instead of becoming the element of magic and the princess of friendship, she ended up travelling round as a struggling magician with very few or no real friends. Because of that, she both idolises and envies Twilight. She also takes refuge in her delusions of being an exceptionally talented unicorn, loved and respected by all her peers because the truth is too painful for her to acknowledge (that sounds really depressing now I put it like that, but that is how I see read her character). All of this is examined a lot in Trixie Times Two.
On top of that I wanted to bring in elements of fantasy/sci-fi/time travel etc. which led to the inclusion of the Doctor and Derpy. Although I was asked to add the crossover tag, it is only a crossover in the sense that it has Doctor Whooves in it. His personality is inspired by his depiction in the episode Slice of Life, and there is no reference to him having a TARDIS or anything like that. His eccentric inventions will hopefully keep life interesting for Trixie and Twi, since there is little else to occupy them millions of years away from civilisation, for the moment at least.
