    TerraForming: Day 7

Wrote ~2500 words, completed a chapter, but I'm not completely happy about it. I'm going to take another day to figure out why it makes me unhappy. I lost about 800 words to a stupid mistake on my part and the chapter diverged slightly from what I had originally written, so my unhappiness probably lies there.

    TerraForming: Day 6

I went to a baseball game which lasted far longer than it had any right to, so I wasn't able to write anything today. As per my promise, I'll spend tomorrow updating a story. However, in order to appease the gods, I've dug into my plethora of unfinished stories and found one to share for those who wish to read it.

    Terraforming: Day 5

I've got an hour and a half to write this out. Would have started earlier, but Critical Role streams on Thursdays and I am a sucker for Dungeons and Dragons.

    Prompt: Firsts (suggested by Auramane)

    Terraforming: Day 3

No short story today, but I managed to write 1300 words of a new chapter, so I hope to update in another day or two. Just an update to keep track of what I'm doing. I don't know. Ask me something if you want. Or don't. Seriously, why are you even reading this, it's barely 50 words long.

Side goal to add to main goal of writing more: Write earlier in the day.

Prompt: Discord and Celestia/Discord's Origin (suggested by Kapuchu)

[Tragedy?] [Slice of Life?] [Thank God I Don't Actually Have to Tag This]

There are many things somepony could call me. Handsome is one. Beautiful, of course. Powerful, mighty, wise, forgiving, but only on Wednesdays. I've heard mad more than a few times. Heartless, cruel, the usual things you hear when you place an entire world at the mercy of your admittedly nonsensical whims, but let it never be said that Discord Draconequus is an ungracious host. I mean, I flattened an entire mountain range when I heard that Celestia herself was coming to visit me. She would have never had to cross that mountain range, but it's the thought that counts. In any case, there are an infinite number of things I could have done to deter Celestia on her travels; forests I could have raised, chasms I could have carved, endless paths or paintings on mountainsides. Again, there were no mountains that she had to cross, but, you know, the thought. I didn't do any of that! I just sat at my throne and waited. I waited for, oh, a decade or so, if we go by the number of times I juggled the sun and moon across the sky. Might have actually been a few hours, I'm not sure. I've never been very good with time.

Anyway, I sit at my throne and wait, juggling to pass the time, occasionally eating a passing cloud or a wandering waterfall, and she appears, calmly walking over the crest of the hill, a scuff here, a bruise there, but her head held as high as ever.

"Celestia," I said, "all alone today?"

"My sister is elsewhere," she responds.

"Too busy to see me?" I ask, rightfully offended.

"Luna is in the Everfree Forest," she says. "This is your last chance, Discord, there's no going back after this."

I laugh at that. "You think I'm afraid of some trees? Turn around, Celestia, go back to your gardening."

"You know what's in the Everfree, Discord," she says. "We've found it; Luna's attuning herself to the Elements as we speak and I'll be forced to do the same unless you return everything to the way it was."

I gave her Sneer #562, you know the one. "Should've thought of that before, Princess. Bring your Elements, I'll roll out the red carpet." I snapped my fingers and the chessboard patterned grass beneath her turned a deep red.

Celestia looks desperate now, like she's pleading with me. "Discord, please, don't make me do this."

"You see, Celestia," I say, and I think I was grinning then, "I told you this was the only way it was going to go. You should have done something when I asked you to, when you would have actually been able to do something."

She shakes her head. She might have been crying. I didn't bother checking. "I didn't want. Don't want to. Not unless there's something else that can be done."

"There's nothing," I respond. And that was true.

"Please, Starswirl." She was definitely crying then, now that I think about it.

"I didn't want this. Never wanted anything like it. I asked you to take care of it after I banished those sirens, when my magic first began to go out of control."

"Is there nothing I can do?" she asks.

"You can join Luna and do what you should have done." Honestly, I spent most of the good years of my life teaching her and I have to do the same during my unlife.

She wants to argue, I can see it in her eyes, but she doesn't. Celestia sets her jaw firmly, and wakes back down the hill with every ounce of regality she'd built up in her long life. Infinitely long. As mine would be, if not for the relief the Elements could provide.

That was a few days ago. I've heard that Celestia is returning, this time accompanied by Luna, both of them wearing regalia that seem to banish my chaos as they encounter it. What fantastic news. I hope they arrive quickly, while I still have a shred of my consciousness within this amalgamation of magic encroaching on my mind. Already, I can feel some other force at work, speaking of seeds that could weaken the Elements before they can be used. At least, I think they would. I've always had a terrible sense of time.

Arrive quickly Princesses, so I may prepare for the end. I'll welcome it with open arms. I am, after all, nothing if not a gracious host.

I consider Dearest Fluttershy the best of the stories I've written thus far, though I enjoy rereading In Vino Veritas, a short abstract story I wrote in one of my blogs every once in a while. Writing this reminded me of writing Dearest Fluttershy, and made me realize that I never wrote that follow-up blog I'd been meaning to write.

I love writing Discord. I have many unfinished one-shots centered around him. I've always had a fascination with immortal characters that could exist outside of the whole 'Everyone Around Me is Dying and that Makes Me Sad' thing. Discord in Dearest Fluttershy is an exception because it's his first real encounter with death. I believe that by the end of that story, he's grown to accept death and won't tear his hair and beat his chest at every death thereafter. He'll still be sad, but he has a better grasp on death and what it means for an immortal being. That Discord also has an equally immortal Twilight to lean on, so that helps too.

This story also echoes Dearest Fluttershy in Discord's concept of time. I love scenes where an ultra-powerful being does years of work in the span of a few seconds (see the ending of Lev Grossman's The Magician's Land for reference) and part of the fun of immortals and ultra-powerful beings, for me at least, was messing with the concept of time. What sparked the idea to use that in Dearest Fluttershy was the season four premiere, where Discord thinks that the seeds he plants will take effect within a minute and then it takes over a millennium to even begin showing their effect. It's possible that he didn't know the Tree of Harmony would have enough residual power to resist the seeds, but that doesn't quite fit with my image of Discord. Also, there's the whole laughing even as he's being encased in stone thing.

That's it for this day of TerraForming. Feel free to leave a prompt or anything you'd like for me to address in the comments.

Hmm... not exactly what I had thought it would turn out like, but it's nice nonetheless

Though I'm not a fan of the whole "Starswirl is Discord!" theory, I think you pulled it off rather well here. It's no grand revelation or anything like that, and it does play on the... things? ideas? intentions? I had with the idea I threw your way.

Also, on a final note, I'm both surprised and happy that my idea was picked. Never woulda expected it :derpytongue2:

Prompt: It's not like I like you.....baka

mahahaha surly your limits will be tested.

Very good, I really enjoyed that.

As for a prompt, maybe something more lighthearted to offset the seriousness of this one?

Luna's first experience of club music after she returns from her banishment. I've always loved the idea of Luna abeing a big figure in the arts and stuff in the past, and I'm always curious about how artists of the past would take contemporary art like dance music or abstract paintings and stuff. It could work with any medium, but I think music is something you're comfortable enough writing about at this poit, so I thought that would be good.

Another idea is just a character preparing to do the thing they're sort of 'famous' for for the first time. Octavia's first cello concert, Vinyl's first set, the first time Rarity showed off her dresses publicly, anything like that. I'm a sucker for short nervous stories like that, don't really know why. Anyway, good luck with all of this, and good to see you tryingt o get back into this.
