Windows 10: Justifiable Concerns and Advice to Wait · 11:20am Aug 6th, 2015

This morning, I received the notification.

I can haz upgrade. The files are on my computer. One click and I'm on Windows 10.

I'm not upgrading yet.

After I backed up my essential, critical files to prepare in case I did decide to upgrade today, I did some quick research online. Specifically, I'm paying attention to what Forbes has to say about the whole thing, and their tech coverage on the Windows 10 rollout is EXTENSIVE.

The bottom line?

All recommendations say "wait until October." In October, the first MAJOR version update to Windows 10 will roll out. It's probable that the update files will be patched to all non-upgraded upgrade kits automatically, and if not, well...it'll update as soon as you install Windows 10 anyway.

So I'm cooling my heels on this upgrade, because we have an entire year to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, and I'd honestly rather wait to make sure Microsoft has all its ducks in a row and the upgrade experience will be completely smooth, with all the things people are complaining most heavily about nailed down and ironed out. Especially the "deal with the devil" aspects of this upgrade.

So if you haven't upgraded already, my advice: wait until October.

We do offer a free uprgade at my work (Staples)-- had an order today, but got sidetracked, so I didn't finish it beyond back up her files, so I haven't actually done one for any customers yet, tho we have done them for our demo computers, from 8 to 10 (and still haven't heard an answer as to what/why 9 was skipped).

Have also heard 10's got a lot of privacy leaks.

I got it using the manual media upgrade, and I have to say this:

There is no reason to upgrade. Windows 10 adds nothing of any use to PC users that Windows 8 does not already provide, It just installs a bunch of annoyingly useless metro apps all over again, simply causing you a bunch of effort. Things like Cortana are not even helpful, and are so heavily geared to use on phones that it may as well not exist on PC.
It's less optimized than 8, too.

Bottom line- it's not worse. But, it's not worth the effort of installing a new OS.
Perhaps with the next windows, they'll make it for fucking PCs and not tablets and phones. And, they'll charge full price like they did with 7 and 8. One more mediocre product like this and I'll move to Linux.

3299648 With respect, I don't think you fully understand what Windows 10 is.

Windows 10 is intended to be the final full version of Windows. From now on, all updates will be to Windows 10, which in about 10 years will just be called "Windows".

Windows 10 is intended to be "one OS to rule them all", for use across ALL Windows devices-PCs, tablets, and phones.

All the tech rags say that when Windows 10 is finished, it will be the most amazing and ambitious OS ever conceived.

WHEN it's ready.

They also pretty much universally agree that Microsoft rolled it out too soon.

Give it a few months, then see what you think once they've worked out the kinks.

Me, I'll wait until October or November to upgrade. By then they SHOULD have it mostly ready.

If you do upgrade to Windows 10, you have up to one month to go back to your previous version. I know because mines is running just fine. That is not to say I won't downgrade and wait for October.

Good to know. Haven't gotten the message yet, but I'll wait for a bit once I do.

Supposedly it would've run into conflict issues with Windows 95 and 98 because nobody thought about it when those two engines were created. Supposedly. I'm not at all certain.

I had 10, but re installed 8, because of one MAJOR flaw. NOTHING is compatible with 10 yet. no game, program, or otherwise, that I use on a daily basis worked. Listen to Wise Moth-sama, for he has approximate knowledge of most things.

NOTHING is compatible with 10 yet.

*quirks eyebrow* Come again? I've had zero problems on that front. What programs do you use? It's probably something related to your system.

3299964 I was using LoL, my GIMP, and even Steam had too many problems.

You play Pokémon Shuffle right?

3300132 Yeah. I do a weekly blog post about that and Pokemon X on Mondays.

3300143 Have one of them reach MAX level?

3300172 One? Dude, I've got at least twenty maxed out Pokemon in Shuffle.

I can completely agree with getting the upgrade in October. I got the upgrade at two in the morning TODAY, and I've been dealing with a huge problem. When you upgrade to Windows 10, It automaticly changes your Microsoft account to being a child instead of an adult. This causes you to be on restricted mode every single time you use a website owned by Google. I.e, Youtube. There's only one way to fix it that I can see, and that involves logging back onto your Microsoft account, and changing it back to you being an adult. So yeah. Wait until October for sure.

3300042 I'm using the beta builds of Steam but I haven't had any issues with it since upgrading.

3299648 My only problem with Metro UI apps in Windows 8/8.1 was that they were only able to run in full screen which semi-regularly caused issues with windowed programs made pre-Metro. With Windows 10 that issue is no longer a problem because Metro UI apps function in windows by default now.

3300332 I may be mistaken but based on my experience with Windows 10 (having upgraded ~1 week ago) I believe that may be unrelated. Either that or it's related to the blue e, they might have changed it's official name but I'm still not going to click on the blue e.

I suppose it could be that Cortana thing too, I haven't activated that yet.

Hm, the only things I'm noticing that I have problems with is some of the apps like e-mail crashing and not properly syncing, and also the desktop version of skype messing up bad, not connecting to group calls, when a call is stopped it's impossible for me to call other people, etc.

Well that's actually a surprise to me. And a disappointment.
Forgive me for sounding old-fashioned, but jack of all trades, master of none. Windows 10, no matter how good it may become, will never be a good OS for PCs if it's constantly trying to also pander to phones and tablets.

Also, where is Microsoft going to get it's money from? They used to charge hard for their OSs.

3300555 The Blue E is the new browser, Microsoft Edge. In my opinion, It's just like Google Chrome, but you can draw on the webpage without taking a screenshot of it. That's the only difference that I found after messing with it for an hour. And the Google site problem effects all browsers. It's saved to automatically enter restricted mode whenever you enter your browser and open a Google site. It's definitely a problem with your Microsoft Account.

3301645 We're in a world where tablets, laptops, and phones are more important and present than PCs. It's a fact of life.

Microsoft's money will come from where it's always come from: the royalties for sales of new PCs with Windows installed, as well as the sale of premium software, subscriptions to freemium apps, and so forth.

3302111 I guess the world will have to endure a step back in time, for a while at least.

With every passing day, Windows seems like it's becoming more and more like OSX. I've never used an Apple product long-term. I don't think I ever will.

Why does Windows try to make their OS work for all the different devices?
This is the problem we have here. They're pandering to the lesser races. Microsoft is pandering to all the phone and tablet users, in the process, greatly sacrificing the abilities of PCs.
And, no matter how much you may disagree with me, PCs are the master race. Laptop, or not.

I'll stand by and patiently wait for Windows 10 to be ridden of the useless baggage that it tows.
Actually, you know something that could make Windows 10 great? Cortana.
If windows spent enough money on it/her, and got her to work well (and properly) then that would far make up for all the problems in Windows 10. As of now, she has very limited ability. She can search the web, and she can open certain applications. What really gets me (and this comes back to the problem of things being dumbed down like Apple) is that you cannot create any custom macros for voice commands. For instance, record a phrase you say, and link that to doing a certain task. Also, if you could dictate speech to it during typing... say a story, then that would be absolutely brilliant. Problem is, for that, you would need a fast PC. And tablets and phones are not fast. So, that'll never happen.

Ugh, at this point, I'm ranting so hard that I amaze even myself.
I'm just.... disappointed.

3302125

Why does Windows try to make their OS work for all the different devices?

This is the problem we have here. They're pandering to the lesser races.

Wow.

You really DO have your head in the sand.

Let me spell it out for you:

PHONE AND TABLET USE HAS OUTSTRIPPED PC USE BY A MASSIVE AMOUNT.

We're in a mobile world now. PCs are NOT the preferred platform for most Windows users now.

I'm a PC user and always will be, but at least I've accepted the reality of today's world.

3302141
No, that's not what I meant. Why can't Microsoft make two different OSs, one for PC and one for tablets and phones? That's what I'm asking. Also, at the same time, Windows on phones may as well not exist, as android is far better optimized.

Also, can we please keep the insults to a minimum? I like to keep respect for as many people as possible.

3302154 Microsoft is attempting to do something that actually makes sense. They're thinking ahead to phones, tablets, and PCs that all run on the same processors, all have the same memory capacity, and all have the same level of storage capabilities.

Which is coming sooner than you think. And which is why what they're doing with Windows 10 is actually a good idea. "One OS to rule them all" makes a LOT more sense when you realize that we're reaching a point where the only real difference between all these devices is how and where you use them.

Microsoft wants everyone to run the same OS on all their devices so that Microsoft has to do less to do more. If Windows 10 is running evenly across PC, tablet, and phone platforms, and people can just migrate a session from one device to another without interruption, that's a convenience a lot of people want in today's world. That's what Microsoft is going for.

Also, given the--and here I'm pointing out one of the things Microsoft is most heavily criticized for--tendency Microsoft has to want to know where you are and what you're doing, Windows 10 and its cross-device compatibility makes it easier for Microsoft to know when you leave the office, when you leave the house, when you're roaming around IN the house, etc. etc. so even though that's a really CREEPY reason for it, that's also part of the consideration that went into Windows 10.

But mostly? They're trying to do what Apple does. Which isn't really anything new. Apple does something cool, Microsoft catches up to them and does it better.

You remember my PM that I sent you earlier this week. Do you think that the issue I had will be fixed by that time too?

3302434 Good, because I'd like to be able to upgrade to Windows 10 at some point.

3302436 I imagine by November-ish, they'll have most if not all of the major bugs, software support issues, and security holes fixed, as well as figured out which features are pissing people off the most and dealing with it one way or another.

3301976 I know what The Blue E is, though apparently IE is still a thing even on Windows 10. I also realize that your Microsoft Account problem probably is an issue with your Microsoft Account. I'm just saying that it was probably caused by one of the new features/programs of Windows 10 that I haven't used yet as I haven't had any such problem. Hells, it might even just be user error by you or an admin on the computer in question.

phones, tablets, and PCs that all run on the same processors, all have the same memory capacity, and all have the same level of storage capabilities.

I... don't know of many phones or tablets out there with an i7 processor, a GTX 770 graphics card, 16gb of ram, and 3 tb of HDD space.... or even anything in the future.

They're trying to do what Apple does.... Microsoft catches up to them and does it better.

I must disagree with you on that one. The reason I use PC is because they don't (or didn't) do what Apple does. Apple dumbs everything down and lowers the capability of everything, and then resells those capabilities with jumped-up price and hype.
