Rambling, updates for stories, and happenings at the current moment · 3:41pm Aug 2nd, 2015
So, bit of an update for myself, and for my two current stories that are unfinished.
I had a bit of an epiphany the other day when I went to see Ant Man. Normally, I don't go to movies, as there aren't many I care to see. But that will change once the new Star Wars films are released. As a fan of Star Wars, I'm obligated to go see them at the very least. I'm not particularly fond of comics, and their stories, but the MCU has been an interesting ride so far. Not to mention it spawning one of the best television shows since The Wire.... Daredevil
But see, the MCU is partly geared toward me, specifically. That is to say, someone who hasn't read the comics, but still might want to see a good/fun movie. Comics as a medium interest me, but I don't care for it more than the concept. So watching it in a more palatable form (movies) is something interesting. Then... I actually saw it.
The film itself was pretty good, but walking out and driving home... I realized something.
Film and Cinema are garbage.
A bold statement, I'm aware. But I'm prepared to hash out why I think this.
I'll start out by saying this: Comedian Doug Stanhope has a great line: "If marriage didn't exist, would you invent it?"
I think this is a bit leading in certain areas, but it's applicable in many others. So let me ask you a question. If the cinema system didn't exist, would you invent it? Suppose films just came about yesterday. Let's examine, bit by bit, what is actually happening when you go to a cinema.
- The movie itself is presented in only this format for months before it's released to the general public, thus limiting the way they can experience it
Why? What reason could there possibly be in this Internet age to shackle a piece of media to a system so archaic. Well, the answer is simple: old Hollywood money. Theaters have been around for a long time, and they're utterly set in their ways. The cinemas get the movies, so they can make their precious money before anyone else can. Well you know what? Fuck cinemas. I'm an obnoxious entitled millennial twat, and in an age where I can increasingly satisfy my needs by shopping and doing things independently online, the more you force me into your draconic policies, the more you can go fuck yourself.
I don't like going to cinemas. In fact I rather detest it. I've worked with the general public a lot in my life, and it's reached it's nadir. The more I can avoid situations where I have to be faced with them, the better. I'm not a recluse, but one of the key things about millennials - if I'm to be so broad with my generalizations - is that the technology we embrace almost always guarantees one thing: convenience
Let me outline to you what happens when I go to the cinema.
> arrive at the cinema, walk inside. Hope the seats and floor isn't gross or sticky (from anything... food or otherwise)
> sit through advertisements for local businesses and restaurants I'll never go to.
> sit through ads for crappy basic cable TV shows I'll never watch
> sit through coming attractions for movies 97% of which I'll never watch
> finally watch the movie
> pray that there aren't a bunch of annoying simps anywhere around you
> pray that the single mom left her wailing child at a daycare, or with a relative
> hope you don't for some reason have to use the facilities and miss part of the film
> wonder why I'm not watching this at home on my nice 1080p monitor at 60fps.
This is an outdated and, at this point, frankly embarassing business model. One that expects me to sit in a room full of strangers and earn my way to entertainment that I payed for.
There's something insecure about a medium that forces you to watch something in that sort of environment, where it's blasted at you through almost all forms of sensory overload. What are they trying to hide? Surely any medium of merit can allow customers to buy the movie and watch it how they'd like, yes? If it wasn't for a few choice things coming out soon, I'd swear off movies entirely.
Now, on to the stories.
Unfortunately I'm going to have to put CotM on hiatus. I might make another post where I tag it, or tag it here. I don't know. I didn't want to do it, but recent research has drained my mind completely. I'm utterly exhausted each time I get home from work/school. However there is good news here, too. I have written at least five or so chapters for it. They are done, but I'm not going to release them until the rest is finished. Once that's done, it'll be a load off my shoulders, and I can concentrate on getting pt2 off the ground. Won't be long.
Moonlit Sonata is coming along, and I new chapter should be out soon.
A new story is taking form and involving Luna. The same one that I mentioned in the previous blog. I'm happy with it, and it should be released within a few weeks. It's an adventure with more canon characters than I've ever worked with before. It's darker, and more melancholic, dealing with issues from the past, and how they can effect the larger scope of a world. It will feature Luna, because of course. More than that, I won't say.
Anyway, that's the update.
Cheers
