IDW Friendship is Magic #32... · 9:43pm Jul 29th, 2015

I...I just give up.

The latest issue of the main series is overwhelmingly stupid and the story reads like a bad fanfic full of plotholes and inconsistencies and just plain fails at anything remotely resembling logic.

It's been a good run, but...I think I'm done with the IDW comics now. They've just...become unbearable.

You know what's funny? Some shows like G.I Joe get good comics yet bad movies. While shows that are good like MLP later get bad comics. It's like some kind of curse or something.

Yeah, IDW is apparently so lazy they've resorted to ripping off a parody of B-Movies, and they're trying to cash in on Flutterbat's success. I don't forsee them getting better until they get a better editior, and change their stance on criticism (which likely won't happen until their comic sales start to slide, or Hasbro decides to find a better publisher)

How bad is it? I know the earlier ones were good, how bad it this puppy?

3280255 Current arc is a parody of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, in which all the apples at Sweet Apple Acres have gained sentience and declared war on ponykind. Somehow they've enslaved the Apples, despite being, you know...tiny apples without appendages who can't do anything but bounce around and be hard. And then they enslave all of Ponyville, also despite all of the above. And only Flutterbat can save them.

3280278 Yep, that's fanfiction.

3280278 Sounds like a parody of cheesy B-Movies. Though, apples smashing at a high velocity against your head could so some serious cranial damage

Oh boy. I gotta catch up on it, I'll get back to ya once I do.

I made that decision some time ago; the idiocy with the "Holiday Special" and the Cattle Rustlers arc (and Bobby Curnow's excuses when problems with it were pointed out) confirmed the wisdom of that course of action. Oh, and I think this explains part of the problem:

Suggestion: take a break for now, but come back when the "Siege of the Crystal Empire" arc starts in September. THAT should be interesting.

Until next time...

3280308 Oh my GOD what a fucking JERK. Nothing exists without writers! NOTHING!

Okay, I just finished it. My god, it was so dumb! Not to mention there were tons of jumpcuts and plotholes all over that it was just... bad. I don't blame anyone for leaving this series at this state.

3280399 It's not especially surprising, though. Care to see the aforementioned excuses he made for the Cattle Rustlers arc?

3280399 If words alone could sell a book, why bother putting pictures on the dustjacket.

3280421 I think I'll pass. I don't need anger tonight.

3280422 ...your point being? Underneath the cover, it's still a book. That someone wrote. Who wrote it? A WRITER.

Who writes movies? Writers.

Who writes the story in a comic book? WRITERS.

Who writes TV shows? WRITERS.

Nothing exists without writers.

3280421 I don't dare to imagine the excuses he's offered for not making any effort to hold his writers to better standards and prevent disasters like the Cattle Rustlers arc, the Elk arc, and the feuding Ponyville arc. As far as I'm concerned, IDW isn't going to improve as long as this guy's in charge of the comics. He clearly doesn't understand what makes a good comic.

3280388 If they screw that up, it will be the final nail in the coffin for the main series. Friends Forever isn't looking too hot right now either, they had a political rant in #14 that no one asked for, #16 was completely pointless, #18 had a bad artist and a plot that we've all seen a million times in the show by now, and #19's preview seems to cement Rarity as the character that everyone refuses to write well.

So, this comic arc gives us a millennial magic space rock, which imparts an ENTIRE ORCHARD's worth of apples with natural magic resistance, knowledge of medieval technology, and basic military strategy?

Well, given this IS magic, and in a world where Smooze can be a classy party guest, I'm inclined to let the basic plot slide given it's canon that ponies have anything from a decent to poor attention span.

The finer plot details are sort of bungled garbage--the apple lock and cage in general that seems highly meltable to dragonfire, the apples' inexplicable ability to wield spears, and the meaningless sideplot of keeping things on the down-low when Princess Luna of Canterlot friggin knows about it, which pretty much ensures Tia will know one way or another--but everything else seems feasible enough to me.

3280278

Oh MY GOD, that is THE stupidest thing I've EVER heard! I'm glad I've never read any of the comics.

...both because of all the bad talk about them and because I don't know where to find them.

3280495 True, but the average reader isn't drawn in by words. Without an artist or illustrator, Not nearly as many people would take notice of it. The writer is there to keep readers or viewers there once they're drawn in.
Existing is one thing. Having your existence being acknowledged by others is something else entirely.

3280912 Eh, the comics WERE good...for a while. It's only in the last six or seven issues or so of both lines that they've started to tank badly.

3281064 Sorry, I'm going to have to completely disagree with you on that one.

3281306 Just as an example, try hitting the feature box without any cover art. With a good enough summary, it's possible.

As for the comics, I bought a bunch of them digitally, but haven't read past the Big Mac issue. Should get back to it at some point.

3280912

They're comics. They're sold in comic book stores.

I haven't read the comics in ages, and in fact I only like a few of the stories. I don't think any of the plots are strongly written, and I don't think the artwork is all that great (if only because they have ugly art or a style that feels too plain or threadbare).

The B-Movie plot actually sounds like it could be good. But the thing about these authors is that they took good ideas and then waste their potential with ass pull after ass pull, pointless subplots, and OOC moments out the ass.

3281740

I'm aware they're comics. "Comics" is in the name. However, all of the comic book stores I've been to do not carry them.

3282512

Don't have Amazon. But whatever. I'm going to stop talking now, because I don't think it is making MythrilMoth too happy that I'm taking up all this comment space for a silly conversation.

3282690

Don't have Amazon.

Uh...

The entire world has Amazon. It's a website. If you're talking about Amazon Prime, Prime has nothing to do with that.

And you can buy the comics in paperback or Kindle no matter where in the world you are.

3282712

Don't you have to have an account on Amazon? ...Whatever. I meant I don't use Amazon.

3282915 You don't HAVE to, no. And it's not like it costs anything to create an Amazon account in the first place.

3282946

I'm sorry. Please pardon my stupidity. I will stop talking now.
