The Windows 10 Rollout! · 1:51pm Jul 29th, 2015

So, as you probably know, today's the day.

Beginning today, the free upgrade to Windows 10 will be made available to Windows 7/8.1 users.

However!

According to sources I've been checking, not everyone is going to get the upgrade today. Windows is rolling out this upgrade in waves, and starting slow, building and scaling up the rollout as they confirm successful installs and viability of the first public release of Windows 10.

In all likelihood, most of us won't get the upgrade until tomorrow or Friday.

I'll just leave this blog post here for anyone interested in discussing Windows 10 to talk about it, including letting us know if you've already received the upgrade.

I'm waiting till it's been in the public hands for a while. I want to know whether it'll mess up all my games or other stuff I do before I decide if I want it on my PC.

It seems like a good thing so far but the most we know about it is Microsoft's advertising. So I say wait before you get it.

That's today?? I totally forgot... Then again I haven't booted my computer in roughly a month cause my phone is a mini CPU.

I reserved it but I probably won't install until next month. I can't afford for it to delete all my stuff if something goes wrong, I've got way too much "important" shit on my machine.

Its exciting though!

At least Windows 10 won't mess with Ponies. We could give it to Twilight to experiment with but then she would never leave the castle.:facehoof:

3279194 According to everyone who had the beta... it should be fine.

I let you know when I get it. If I don't, then I fear this will be the Icon thing all over again.

Also, did you get two emails or just one about the Windows 10.

Haven't gotten my free upgrade yet, so I most likely won't get it until much later.

Zef

3279211 Twilight was never really comfortable with Windows 8. Tiles were cold and the new "desktop" didn't feel like home. So her friends shooed her out of her PC for a day and tried to make it feel just as homey as her old Windows 7 PC had been.

But, turns out, all Twilight really needed was a piece of her old home --the classic desktop.

I got it today. It started downloading at about 3:00 AM (12:00 AM at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond) then I installed it once I got up. I've been customizing stuff since then.

3279579 You know what? I LOVE you.

3279428 I haven't gotten an e-mail about Windows 10 other than the confirmation of my reservation, months ago.

3279578 Probably not a good idea, dude. Windows 10 = updates and support forever, and all the good stuff about Windows 7 with none of the stuff people hate about Windows 8.1 (for whatever reason). Also, Cortana and the XBox app. Anyway, you have a year to decide.

3279886 How did you get the notification?

3279918 I haven't gotten the notification yet, and I'm honestly not even expecting it today. Believe me, you'll KNOW when you get the notification, because it'll take up the bottom right quarter of your screen.

3280156 They might be breaking it up based on location.

3280163 There's that and also the first people getting it are the insiders/beta testers. And, of course, it's by time zone too, so New Zealand got it first...North America would get it last, and I'm not exactly sure HOW the rollout breakdown works. In any case, it's known by now that a lot of users won't get it today.

It's worth noting that Windows 10 is (arguably) somewhat invasive of one's privacy. (See here and here.) If you're worried about that you can opt out of the data collection (as I have), but it means you forfeit some of the OS's snazzier features. Not to punish you or anything, it's just that the said features (like Cortana, for example) need that data in order to function.

Best part of Windows 10: Cortana.

Finally. A digital girlfriend assistant on your desktop.

If I can, I think I'll customize her to behave like that AI from Her.

Agreeing with Orcaon on this one. Going to wait a bit and see how it pans out. I'm in no hurry. Win 7 ultimate is getting along fine with my writing software, and my World of Warcraft, so I'll coast a bit and see how well 10 is received.

3280795 Did you get an email confirmation?

3280980
I did three hours ago. --Why?

3280982 Wanted to make sure. I think I got it.

3280982 Did it lead you to a program that would download Windows 10?

3280990
Hold on, I'll check. . . .

3280990
No, it doesn't. I think we actually get it in early August.

3280997 Weird. The email I got is different.

3280997 Does it say Windows Insider?

3281005
It's from Windows. Not Windows Insider.

3281004 It starts with Hello Windows Insider.

3281009
No, mine starts with "Congratulations on reserving Windows 10."

Either I have the wrong e-mail, or you do.

3281013 I have that one from when I reserved it.

3281015
Then I have the wrong one.

Damn. Guess I'll still be waiting for my copy.

3281017 Then I guess I did get it. It gave me a link.

3281028
It works here in California. Eat it, Microsoft!

Windows 7 is good.
Windows 8 sucks.
Windows 9 has been erased from reality with a time paradox, but probably would have been good.
So, Windows 10 probably sucks.

3281005
3281006 Guys guys...look.

If you're a "Windows Insider", that means you get Windows 10 before everyone else.

The rest of us have to wait a day or three.

That's all it means.

Oops, I haven't even made the reservation yet. I don't know if I can be bothered for a new update to be honest. Will it set everything to default afterwards? I can't be asked to customize it for about the 3rd time. Plus last time I updated anything on my computer...it crashed. Windows will probably force the update sooner or later, so lets get this over with. Here's hoping to a good update for all. :yay:

3281454 By all accounts, if your machine is running Win7 or Win8.1 smoothly, the upgrade should be a painless process, you shouldn't lose any data or settings, and anything you DO have to reconfigure shouldn't take too long (except setting anything other than Edge as your default browser, apparently they've made that a pain in the ass).

3281613
That doesn't sound too bad then. Thanks for the info :)

3281304 It says to let friends and family know about Windows 10. All I am doing is what it says.

3281613
But that does mean Opera will still be installed, right?

3281807 Windows 10 will not REMOVE any software from your computer except obsolete Microsoft stuff.

3281815
Okay, cool. Thanks.

3281815 This makes me happy because I had to reboot my computer. I am suffering right now.

I don't hate it, but I don't care for it. I got so used to windows 8.1 that this one feels a bit off, but all I need to do is give it time.
