The Dresden TV Show - My thoughts - 01, Birds Of A Feather · 12:44am Jul 28th, 2015

SO, I just saw the first episode of the Dresden TV-series. ‘Birds Of A Feather.’

My thoughts beyond the cut.

Written in no particular order while watching, so spoilers and a bit jumbled.

Very, very different, but not bad. If it weren’t for the names I’d pegged it as one of those shameless ‘inspired by X, but we don’t want to actually pay the fees’ type deals.

Dresden felt a bit too soave, but not bad. Not sure why they felt a need to have him inherit his mother’s shield-bracelet instead of her pentacle, but not bad at all.

Bob? I actually liked. Felt dangerous in a good way. Like a slightly more sane Evil-Bob. Clearly trying to lead Dresden down ‘warlock’ hood, but with more of a plan and the type of skills Dresden simply can’t ignore.

I did however like the flashes of genuine concern. Made him feel human, and distinct from ‘the’ Bob in a good way.

Murphy was… a brunette. Since one of my personal hang-ups is that for some reason I keep imagining her that way instead of blond it felt weird, but as such I can’t attest to the rage button that detail apparently was for many.

I don’t like the daughter bit, though. Talk about a ‘kidnap me for extra drama’ plot-device writ large.

The skinwalker’s crows true form was la~ame! Talk about a special effects failure. All that buildup, for a man in a black feather coat? They could have done more with that even on a TV budget, especially for the make-or-break it starting episode.

I actually liked the bit about ‘the raven clan.’ Bit generic, but cool concept. Could be explored quite a few ways if they are the ‘mercenaries’ of the skinwalkers. If they’re the morally grey, what does that mean for the saints or sinners of the ‘group?’

The Doom Box was really damn clever, though. Talk about poisoned monster cat-nip, filling a tiny box with enough dark magic to fry any monster non-clever enough to just open something like that. As a bonus that limitation on only working on stupid monsters and the risk of collateral damage does give it a few clear drawbacks that stops it from being an anti-monster multi-tool.

So, yeah, again. Really different but not bad. Not bad at all. The first episode at least felt as if somebody wanted to do their own thing but still vastly respected the source material.

And… well, I can relate to that as a fan-fiction writer. :twistnerd:

Quite a few good actors as well as a bonus, with even the kid being quite good!

I do wish there had been some more outright magic, though. For a pilot episode about a wizard-for-hire it felt a bit lacking in that department with only a few interesting effects.

Still, it did the most important thing it could have done, and that is make me want to watch the rest of the series.

So far I’m liking the show and intend to continue this, so no spoilers please.

There's a dresden files TV show? My gawd... must go watch

Especially since its endorsed by the fanfic author who convinced me to finally read the damn series.

I personally wasn't a big fan of the show... But, I will give it a few things. They did get the personalities of the characters, if not the world over all, more or less right.

Dresden files TV show I remember watching that on Netflix a few years ago the show was canceled after one season.
and if I remember right season one is based on the first book.

Wait until you get to the episode they made of Storm Front. Coming from a bit of a diehard Dresdenite, I hate the show. However, it is not without its props (pun may or may not be intended). Not to mention! They changed Murph's name to Connie. I hate the new name for everybody's favorite aunt badass as well as her brown-hairedness and tallerishness.

As for Hrothbert of Bainbridge, I like the character, and they gave him the ability to holograph himself because the test they did with just the skull didn't turn out quite as well as they'd hoped.

Now, onto Morgan: he's black in the show, whereas he's a grumpy old white guy in the books. I would have at least saved the actor himself for Sanya's role, eh. And then there's Ancient Mai...Oh deary me, it was byad.

ANYWAY, I could go on, but I'll let you finish watching the half season that is the series before saying much else.

The first episode was based on the first book. After that, it took its own path (that I know of, I haven't finished all of the books yet).

The other day I walked in on my roommate watching Arrow on Netflix. The scene had Paul Blackthorne in the middle of the screen and I said, "Wait a minute, I don't remember this episode of Dresden!"

I mean, his character in Arrow looks almost identical to his role as Harry. It was eerie.

3274940 Curb your expectations. It doesn't even approach the level of the books, though the first episode and a few others were decent by the standards of television. More like an homage to Dresden than a true Dresden TV show. I suspect I'd have liked it more if it wasn't trying to fill the shoes of something I enjoy as much as The Dresden Files.

Of course, I can't quite forgive the show for teasing us with the blue beetle seen in the background of a mechanic shop he visits, while Harry drives some stupid, vaguely military surplus jeep type thing. Even worse they made Murphy Brunette and normalish height, gasp!

Oddly, I rather liked the show's version of Morgan, even if he looked nothing like the book's version, for some reason I always pictured Morgan as a black man even before the show, and the actor did a good job. (It wasn't until I saw the Dresden graphic novel that I changed my mental picture of him to a white guy with a graying pony tail!)

I watched the TV show after I had only read the first 3 books, and ever since then I imagine Murphy and Morgan looking like their counterparts on the show. Harry is shown on almost every cover, but I still imagine him with Paul Blackthorne's earnest voice. And I really love that Bob from the Dresden Files had the same voice as Oberon from Gargoyles.

I did try to watch it and got almost to the last episode of season 1. Honestly speaking Bob was the only good thing in the show, the rest was pretty much garbage.
