Anyone recognize this? It's been about a year since the last main story chapter was published, and these are the stats Rainbow Dash chose to upgrade in Chapter 11 Part 5, and I'm here to talk about them.

To sum this up: I feel that I want to shorten how much information is shown in the Level Up Stats, mostly the numbers. So as some of you may know, I've taken the concept of Pip's RPG progression and molded it for Equestrian Earth's uses, but I think I may have gone a little much with it. Including the stats and numbers and the details that went into the ability descriptions and their power was great, but they didn't exactly add more to the story other. More or less, the numbers don't mean much I guess, and it takes quite a bit of time and effort to think carefully about how I want to 'balance' the abilities and stuff. But the thing is that I'm not making a video game, so there's really no point to showing how an ability's damage scales. Showing the damage progression of [Some Attack Name] as 50/120/160/255/330 Physical DMG, to me, is just the same as saying it deals tons of damage. I'm better off leaving those numbers off so I can concentrate on providing the base explanation of the abilities and skill attacks. It'll save me a lot of time and thinking, and I'm pretty sure people didn't really care for that. I think.
In fact, there's a comment before from somebody that said the numbers broke the immersion, so I might as well leave that out.

As for the Attributes, I don't know if I want to keep them either. I might as well just go back to saying which attributes were upgraded without showing the numbers, or maybe simplify the whole system of attributes and provide only 3 Attribute points per level instead of 10. But that means I'll have to do math again for the story... fuck.

I don't know, I think I'm a little whiny about this but I'd rather focus on the story rather than game stats and numbers. What do you guys think? Okay with me simplifying the Level Up Statistics?

Your call. I'm a huge nerd and love these stats, but more effort going into the story rather than fabricating them is good too. I know I'm not helping the decision process, but I'll stand behind your decision happily either way!

I think what the skills are don't matter so much as how the characters react to them. Rainbow Dash wouldn't care as long as she saw they eventually did a lot of damage, whereas Twilight would watch her stats carefully to the single digits because that's the kind of mare she is. While I myself always read the numbers, I didn't find them a huge part of the story, but I did appreciate it as this IS an MMO. But it could be nice to see every character react to the game in different ways (I mean more than they already do) in there seperate PoV chapters.

Of course I remember awhile back when you posted a similar blog about HP and Mana, and how you where going to change mentions of it because they where to specific, so rather than 57/100 it'd just be Yellow. I believe this would be the same situation as EXP, Stats, anything really. Even just items characters find. But that's only my two cents and I haven't tried to write anything (on this site at least) for three years.

You have a good point about character's reactions to their stats. In fact Rainbow would actually just put all her points into Strength and Dexterity and not care about Luck (which is actually changed to something else).
