    The Knife’s Edge

The other day I got a message from ZanarNaryon telling me they had created a TVTropes page for To Serve In Hell. Now, TVTropes can be a dangerous place to start reading, unless you have a few hours to spend getting lost in it. But if you want to check it out, please

Not with a bang, but a whimper

    Hey friends.

I didn’t used to believe in writer’s block as such. I always thought the phenomenon was a manifestation of something else in a person’s life. I also thought the cure for it was just to sit down and write any garbage you can. Editing should never mix with drafting, and if you can get yourself to stop editing, you’ll achieve more and better drafting—which can then be edited.

Ping 2: Live and In Person

Almost exactly 2.5 years ago, my family and I bought tickets to Whinny City Pony Con 2020. Of course there was no such con, at least not in a physical capacity. But good egg that he is, Charlie Worthley (con organizer extraordinaire) has made it effortless to transfer our tickets from that long-ago time to right now, despite all that’s transpired between.

    Ping

    I live.

    Time's gotten away from me.

2020 got weird. My 2021 started with an honest effort to get back to normal. But after I started getting treated for depression, I began to see more and more ways to improve things in my daily and family life that hadn't fit together very well in years. Including some of the core issues that had pointed me in the direction of MLP in the first place.

    Artistic Expression

It's been too long. Things are great. Really, really great. Not so much for writing, but for different modes of expression and life.

Right now I'm feeling the weird (kinda-) opposite of writer's block, like several partial ideas are all trying to escape my head at the same time and are just stuck flailing limply at each other.

Can I just throw some ideas out there and ask which ones you think deserve a hand getting through that door?

1) [Sad/slice of life] Continue my Derpy series. As Derpy and Berry grow to be closer friends, somepony starts spreading the rumor that they're in a relationship. Show the disruption that this brings to their lives.

2) [Adventure/comedy] Daring Do and Secret Agent Sweetie Drops are both transporting items of significance aboard a train. Dr. Caballeron hijacks it, takes the items, and causes havoc for the passengers.

3) [Comedy/human] A thousand years ago, the Sirens nearly conquered Equestria. Star Swirl reaches across space and time to summon a specific MTV-era rock band to help defeat them.

4) [Romance/comedy] Finally, finally, write a Derpy x Troubleshoes shipfic.

5) [Dark/Tragedy] Attempt to resurrect certain aspects of my Seduction of Princess Cadance project (though at this point I would probably scrap the actual attempt to seduce Cadance, and find other bad things for the all-OC cast to get up to).

6) [Dark/Tragedy] Shakespeare wrote many plays. I would like to ponify one of them. Granny Smith would end up going mad and sparking all kinds of conflict. And in the end, everypony dies.

Dark/Tragedy all day every day. There may be a rule against ponifying existing works of literature, though. Maybe it only applies to switching out names. If it's a new retelling with ponies, I'm sure you're in the clear.

Idea #6 would involve a complete new retelling. I'll slot this in as a "definitely eventually" project. I still have a copy of the play from my school days, and I've purchased the Cliff's Notes to make sure my understanding of its themes is solid; now I just need to sit down and read/re-read those...

Sounds like it could be a lot of fun. I'd be happy to help when the time comes.
