My Thought on "Party Pooped" · 6:47pm Jun 27th, 2015
Nobody asked, but here ya go My thoughts on this week's episode, Party Pooped.
Spoilers. You've been warned.
So, still recovering from the drek that was Princess Spike, I was a bit afraid of this episode. At first, I thought said fears ere confirmed, because the Yaks from Yakyakistan (I'm not making that up, by the way. I wish I was that clever) were the worst. They were annoying, and horribly overdone in the world of cartoons. They're your typical "barbarian, we break what we don't like, we speak like the Incredible Hulk" characters. They're so boring that I don't even remember their names.
But, omitting the Yaks, the other characters were pretty fun to watch. The most entertaining versions of Twilight, to me, are Panicked Twilight (a la Lesson Zero) and Crunch Time Twilight (as seen in Twilight's Kingdom). This episode has the best Panicked Twilight I think I've ever seen, mostly because her panic is super justified. Her first actual diplomatic meeting is a decent reason to be a bit nervous.
This episode was rocky at the start, but as soon as focus shifted away from the Yakyakistani and shifted towards Pinkie, it became gold. First off, let's look at Pinkie's plan for a second. She intended to go from Ponyville to the Crystal Empire, go all the way to the other side of said Crystal Empire, climb a literal mountain, then trek for Celestia knows how long until she reaches a kingdom that is "so far north, that nopony has ever even been", then make a return trip to Ponyville in time to plan, set up, and throw a party scheduled for that very afternoon. She then gets on a train, ends up in Appleloosa somehow, and then tries anyway, as if it is still totally possible. Like, when you need to leave the house by 3 P.M., and you check your watch and it turns out that it is currently 6:45 P.M., and you say to yourself "I still have time".
She runs into Cherry Jubilee, which is-. Wait, what? Cherry Jubilee? Holy Moses, haven't seen her in a while. Anyway, Cherry Jubilee gets her to Manehattan, where Pinkie forms, joins, and disbands the Beetles (again, totally serious) and somehow makes it to the Crystal Empire to ask Cadance to help her over the mountain. Ms. Pie eventually makes it to Yakyakistan, but falls on a sled and ends up sliding all the way from there to Ponyville. Across snow, dirt, and yes, concrete.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Six are in Pinkie's basement. It's pitch black, and nopony can see. Fluttershy says "I can't tell if my eyes are open or closed", which really made me laugh for some reason. They get the lights, turns out Pinkie has a secret basement (DANGER, DANGER, WARNING, WARNING) where she plans and organizes parties for years to come. She planned out up to her parents' 500th anniversary, which leads me to believe that Pinkie genuinely believes that you live forever. As I thought on that, I realized that's probably not true, but I continued working it out in my head, and I've decided that Pinkie's parents are already dead. They talk about Mamma Pie (still don't know her name, too lazy to search wiki) a lot now, but we haven't seen her but the once. It's starting to feel like classic "the lady doth protest too much".
That basement scene was really funny to me for whatever reason. Specifically, I enjoyed Pinkie's list of things Twilight enjoys at parties. She likes vanilla ice cream (which I'd always sensed in her), red balloons, and dancing (Ha!). That was good enough, but the list continued with "But is afraid of quesadillas". My enjoyment of that bit was from equal parts Fluttershy's delivery, the absurdity of the comment, and the thought of all the fanwork that this could spawn. I myself have a story in conception centered around that line.
Overall, I rate this episode at a solid 6 out of 10. It wasn't perfect. It wasn't even good, really. It was watchable, it had some good moments, and it was damn sure better than last week.
Got thoughts of your own? I'm sure you do, so feel free to share them in the comments, and I'll see you next week with my thoughts on the episode Amending Fences.
