Bronycon, panels and panelists · 12:26am Jun 11th, 2015

As things cool down from the Midwest Brony Fest, I've had a chance to speak with some other friends regarding my experiences and what I thought of the whole ordeal. One thing that is consistently asked is why don't I attend as a panelist?

The short answer is the best answer: I didn't know that was an option. >_> Had I known, I would have done some poking around to see what I could do!

Unfortunately, from what I'm also hearing, it may be too late to enter myself as a panelist for Bronycon this year. Is this accurate? Did I miss the best time to volunteer or is there still time, or could I submit myself as a panelist that participates with others? (More than one of the panels in MWBF had multiple people coordinating together.)

This is all kinda new to me, and not just in the sense of conventions. Prior to MWBF, the last time I had spoken in front of a group of people was in college, and the thought of doing so again was something that conjured feelings of dread and anxiety. I always did well during those classes but I was always the person who gave a speech about something noone cared about.

Now, though, I have people approaching me and who are legitimately interested in what I have to say. That alone is empowering for me, and I feel like I'd really be missing out on a personal opportunity if I didn't at least -try-.

TL;DR? Con Panels, how do?

:Arad: Welcome to the Advanced Marketing Panel, today I will tell you how I infiltrated your fandom years ago to stir up grass roots hype about the upcoming XCOM 2, roll the trailer please.

Unfortunately, from what I'm also hearing, it may be too late to enter myself as a panelist for Bronycon this year. Is this accurate? Did I miss the best time to volunteer or is there still time, or could I submit myself as a panelist that participates with others? As a Bronycon panelist:
The panel list is finished, but people still have a little bit of time to finalise who gets to be on them (up to six per panel, with the con providing up to four free entrance tickets).

So I'm afraid you can't start an XCOM panel, unfortunately, but if you know someone who's running a panel you're interested in joining, there should still be time

After attending several writing panels last year I keep thinking, "I could be on one! I know all the answers!"

And then I remember that I'm pretty shy.

Thanks for the info! :D

...I know noone who is running any panels! D:

Heh. Well, I know ABagOfVicodin is running a Crossover panel at Bronycon, but they've already got their six people sorted, so unless someone bails...

Sorry, man. There's always next year, I guess? :twilightblush:

Seems that way. : (

Would it be possible for you to figure out who's running different panels, and then asj around a few that interest you if they're not already filled up? I imagine there's some sort of resource for finding a panel to work with.

Usually there's someone in charge of panels you can talk to. You can also ask panel moderators if that isn't an option. As long as you're polite, courteous, and know what you're talking about (this last one is actually not a requirement, just advice), most panels will welcome an extra.

If you would like to create a panel, it's really easy. I'll break down how I did it:

1. Find a con that interests you.
2. Visit said con's web page.
3. Look for the link to "events" or "panel applications".
4. Fill out application and await response.

Actually took a gander at the bronycon page and saw that, but apparently the panels are set at the moment.

Panels? We don't need no stinkin' panels!
Quills and Sofas is a designated hangout for all sorts, and there were lots of FimFic folks hanging out there last year. If you can't find a spot on a writing panel, just set a time when you'll be there.

I had actually spoken with Wanderer D about this earlier tonight. I'm thinking about something akin to a 'Panel Lite' during specific times there when I'm not in other panels. I won't be on the official schedule but at least I can chat with folks!

3138160 You know me, man! We may not be going to Bronycon, but we are going to try to get our panel at at least one more con this year (our sights are set on Nightmare Nights in Dallas, Texas coming in October, hopefully) If you would be up to it, we will likely need people to run it since Nightingale and Quillamore will more than likely not be coming to that one. We also plan to go back to MWBF next year, so we could almost definitely have you sit in then.

3138630 Do that. Quills and Sofas has been my primary hangout for two years of BC and it's never been boring.

Thirding Quills And Sofas. It's a great spot to relax and hang out, talk to folks (I'll be there!), play some cards and BS...

Don't worry, Commander, we've got your back in the field.

I'm afraid my resources for this year are pretty well tapped with my current convention schedule. Next year I'm hoping to hit more, though!
