Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Neighator Pony has started a reading of Aquaman’s Plural Possessive! That's all I have to talk about! Check below for reviews of RarityEQM's The Magic Between Us, The Regular by Ruirik, and three other stories!

H: 1 R: 0 C: 4 V: 0 N: 0

A Dress for Princess Twilight by CowgirlVK
Reading by Dr. Wolf
Genre: Slice of Life
Applejack gets roped into helping Rarity make Twilight’s coronation gown.
The tags do this story no justice; even listening to it, I was expecting something a little more comedic, but instead got an understated piece about the mane six coping with the events of the season three finale that didn’t amount to much. I just expected something more from it, I guess, and it never delivered. As SoL, it’s okay.

The Magic Between Us by RarityEQM
Reading by Goombasa
Genre: Shipping
Twilight gets ready to pop the question to Trixie.
Man, I kinda miss Twixie, nobody writes it anymore. :B Anyway, this will have zero appeal to non-shippers, but I kinda loved it, if only for the method by which Twilight actually pops the question. And after psyching herself up with elaborate plans, no less. It takes a lot for granted and is somewhat overwritten, but I dunno, I liked it. I must be getting sappy.

The Regular by Ruirik
Reading by ChaoticSeven
Genre: Literary
Donut Joe remembers his first regular.
This is the best Donut/Pony Joe fic since A Cup of Joe. The style is excellent, the pacing perfect, and it tells a story of meetings, friendship, and a little bit of the culture that can crop up around coffee shops and the like. The titular regular says very little about himself, but insinuates so much by what he does and doesn’t say. The final scene is an interesting juxtaposition that implies a lot about the show characters. This is a really great read, don’t pass it up.
Highly Recommended

How to Preen Your Chicken by Drakkith
Reading by TheLostNarrator, Emogak and Edward James
Reading by WhoLandon
Reading by BigAshRandomVids
Genre: Scootalove
Rainbow Dash gives Scootaloo a hard time about preening.
I read this once upon a time and downvoted it (I’ve been running into stories like that a lot), and I can see why I did, though I never left a comment: this is really slice of life, along with being sappy as fuck. In an effort to make as happy an ending for the characters as possible, this goes full cheese, and it’s honestly kind of embarrassing. That said, on a reread, I can see what people like about it, and I can’t say it’s a bad story, just one without conflict or pretty much anything other than “feels”. It’ll scratch your Scootalove itch, though. (For the record, I reversed my vote.)

So Many Different Ways to Prey by Loganberry
Reading by Loganberry
Genre: Poem
A rhyming Nightmare Night tale about the horrors of Newborn Cuties.
I don’t even this fic. Normally, I would have been analyzing the metrics while listening to the reading, but it’s a Newborn Cuties crossover about how terrible they were. And goddammit, I just don’t. I will note that I was kind of irritated by the frequent “asides for the sake of making a rhyme”. Things like “In terror at these creatures – that's what I/Will call them, for... oh, hello, Pinkie Pie!/That turtle outfit suits you very well./Oh, sorry, tortoise; thank you, Sweetie Belle.” Admittedly, that one I have to give the author credit for, it was amusing and clever, but it happens far too often (from the outset, even) and really broke the flow. Still.
I Don’t Even

I've finally just read A Cup of Joe, which I really liked, so that recommendation is very well timed.

I was kind of irritated by the frequent “asides for the sake of making a rhyme”

That was a deliberate decision, actually: I wanted to put the asides in from the start. They were more "rhymes for the sake of making an aside" -- I'm just not a good enough writer of poetry to nail that style. (And I certainly wasn't three years ago.) I'll happily take a C for this!
