    old plans, part the end

Somebody pm'd me to ask me how this was going to end and I realized I did in fact have it in me to post this. Sure wish I'd managed it six years ago! Things in parentheses are the bits that'd take too much time to handle in this format.

    regarding fanfanfics

To reiterate, A New Sun is dead. It's so dead that I'm having trouble forcing myself to summarize the ending. But I know a lot of people still care, because they've told me so. More to the point, someone just asked me for permission to do a sort of rework of ANS.

    old plans, part 5

I'm busy with school, my hands hurt, and it turns out my dog has pancreatic cancer. So these are going to get shorter, but they have to happen because, I don't know, they just do.

The following is either one or two chapters.

Literally so mad abou · 1:24am Jun 2nd, 2015

t politics right now that I can't do anything productive. It's kind of an embarrassing problem to have, since I'm certainly not solving my problem with the current circumstances by pacing furiously while composing imaginary letters to various officials.

In other news, things our glorious editor won't let me do:
- tell jokes about things that happened on WWE pay-per-view in 2013
- use clunky metaphors about the structure of shadows
- misspell things
- double space at the end of sentences :applecry:

Fascists! Fascists everywhere. And every time my thumbs up/thumbs down rating almost reaches a 20 to 1 ratio, someone gives me another downvote. God dammit I am a genius, I don't need this kind of treatment, do you have any idea how many books I own? I've even read some of them. I'm also totally super buff, in a pudgy sort of way, so I don't know who all these governments and editors and downvoters think they're messing with. Gonna show congress a little thing I like to call the "superplex." Gonna Zangief these downvoters. Gonna... actually Ascendant is cool, we bros, we bros, but these haters can just take a hike (off of something tall).

Wait, I feel better. Why do I feel better? And what am I even doing? I should be working. laterz

So that's why you aren't working in the doc.

yeah well you smell :rainbowwild:

I don't know who all these governments and editors and downvoters think they're messing with.

Used to play College Ball, y'know. Don't fuck with this editor.

I should be working. laterz

Yes, yes you should.

This just in, slave driver and supervillain Arcanist Ascendant continues to ravage the countryside with empty threats and demands for the immediate eradication of smiles and chocolate.

Arcanist fact sheet:
- invented toll roads
- is personally responsible for that time you stubbed your toe
- inferior taste in dogs
- I'm making these up but they're true in spirit
- hates your favorite pony

If it makes you feel any better, people have been frothing mad about politics for at least as long as there have been politics, so you're probably in pretty good company.

Though considering how long we've been frothing thusly, I suppose it doesn't bode all that well for getting PAST that point, does it?

Ah well. I hear they're serving some great panem over at the circenses this month.

I wasn't working on the doc, but I was working on the story (while pulling weeds, which is the thing I was supposed to be doing). I know how this chapter is going to go now.

Used to play College Ball, y'know. Don't fuck with this editor.

What, football? I did that for about a week in high school, but then I had to move, so we're basically on the same level there. On the other hand, sometimes I lift big things for money. Concrete, lumber, things made out of concrete and/or lumber. How about you, m8? What do you lift, when you're earning money? Or wait, do you even? Do you see what I'm getting at, m8?

What kind of savage prevents you from using double spaces at the end of sentences? Beyond you doing that in each previous chapter, that is.

3116762 I know this one! Two reasons. One, it's a relic that lost nearly every practical purpose decades ago when people starting using computers for their writing. Two, and more importantly, it isn't in common usage anymore.
3116678 Not that we aren't better off in many ways now, tbf. I still prefer to believe Schopenhauer was wrong in at least this one respect, that there's an overall trend of improvement in the past few thousand years of human history.
It's still sobering to remember that we've been having all the same problems all this time.

3116889

I'm not a writer by trade or hobby; I'm a programmer. My interest in the double space after sentence comes from the sentence boundary problem issue from automated natural language parsing, in which it signals the unambiguous end of a sentence.

As for writing, I had people who frothed at the mouth in frustration at attempting to read things without a double space after a sentence, claiming the document as an unreadable compacted mess akin to huge paragraph blocks otherwise. As a service to them, I started the practice and haven't really seen much need to abandon it. I can read single or double spacing pretty much the same, so as far as I knew it was just a personal preference, beyond some overeager editing tools like the hemingway editor which will automatically replace double spaced sentence endings with a single space.

3116911 I did say "nearly," but yeah, okay, I didn't know that stuff. I was thinking of government documents.

3116889 All depends on what you mean by 'improvement,' I suspect. One could probably make an equally compelling case for humanity simply trading one set of ugly things for another over time (and I seem to recall Twain being awfully good at presenting that case), but far be it for me to dampen your enthusiasm!

In any event, when in doubt, there's always fiction. And liquor.

3118983 Higher literacy rates than ever, less war than ever, more food for everyone, health care improving for pretty much everybody, arts and sciences both evolving in awesome ways. In exchange, we've got overpopulation, environmental issues, and a bunch of old problems disguised as new ones. I feel optimistic overall. Maybe we can figure all this out, eh? :pinkiesad2:

Fiction and liquor are up there with the finest ideas humanity has ever come up with and their very existence gives me hope. Books and bocks, ladies and gentlemen, books and bocks.

Books and bocks, ladies and gentlemen, books and bocks.

Now there's a battlecry I can get behind. Lead on, commander.
