...
Meh, I like my version better.
Rather than make Gilda a bad egg, she is merely a representative of the over-arching cultural problem that is Griffonstone. They have become dwarves. Dwarves that lack the love of creating new things, and so they dwindle and die. Instead of creation, they have pride as a unifying factor, a trait which is not necessarily good, especially since, in the case of the episode, it was fueled by greed anyway.
Although it does offer a nice irony, their flaw is what makes them great and vise-versa.
Still, I like mine better.
More viking, less magpie.
You forgot to mention something very important about griffons!
They're cool and will always be cool.

But that's just my opinion.

I liked your version of the Griffons as well, though I didn't agree with it. Your version had the griffon fortress as essentially an underground structure, and, as an airborne species, that would probably disagree with their preferences. The show portrayed the capitol as more of a giant tree on top of a mountain, which makes far more sense. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed your story. It's just I felt the Griffons would want to build where it would be advantageous to them, i.e. they would need large, open spaces.

Underground also makes it strong against other airborne fighters, as well as strong against ground-based forces. I specifically said that there were large shutters in the highest tower to defend against airborne attacks. It was designed with a possible civil uprising in mind which follows with the warrior mindset.
The tree, while cool, offers little to no protection from airborne forces, and ground based ones that have the ability to climb. It definitely gets points for awesome, though.
