I've already got my hands full with my magical trio AU, so this is me just talking out loud.

Starlight Glimmer! 
I really liked how competent she was!! And how she rolled her eyes at Twilight's friendship speech! Had I waited a month or three, I'd have four unicorns as Luna's students instead of three. Whelp, guess that's an idea for somepony else to run with!
Just look at that face! She'd be great to bounce off of Sunset and Trixie's ego!
Even better, she could be the clutz of the four of them! I mean, the only reason she got found out was because she got splashed by an immobile object!
Really hope we'll be seeing her again this season.

1) she is a evil unicorn that has the power to steal cutie marks
2) she scoffed the friendship speeches! THE FRIENDSHIP SPEECHES!
3) she got away from the main six in the season premier
If you really want to you could scrap your stories, and start from scratch with four instead of three.

2950641 Oh I for got You could say she was a student who didn't work out in a flashback. She does make a good antagonist.
You know what? As much as I enjoyed Nightmare Moon, Discord, Chrysalis, Sombra, Sunset Shimmer, and Tirek; Starlight Glimmer truly surprised me in the premier.
I seriously hope we get more on her backstory later this season.
My favorite part was when she did what no other villain has done before:
It was when she totally shut down Twilight while she was in the middle of her monologue about friendship. Twilght's face completely matched mine.
I find it interesting how much she looks like Aria Blaze. Restyle her hair and they could be sisters.
1) I really didn't like the episode because there's just too much wasted potential and she was bluntly an incredibly boring villain with no motivation in the end.
2) We have never had a villain return except redemption wise and she certainly isn't as fun as say chrysalis or discord was as a villain.
3) No way in fuck Luna would take on a student whose special talent is making others less special(That's why it's twilight's star ie the symbol of magic dissipating to dust, the destruction of magic.).

I believe Starlight Glimmer is going to be what many thought what Trixie would have been in Season 1. Mainly Twilights antagonist though I don't think she could be seen as a rival. Also is it me or are the Unicorns prone to evil/to the dark side? I mean let's look at all the antagonist the main six had to face so far. (I will give each an rating 0-5 personal rating how evil each one was. 0 Means it was only conflicting ideals/morals and 5 simple means pure evil.)

You may wonder why I ranked Starlight Glimmer a bit lower then Sunset Shimmer. Well that's purely what we have seen so far. Starlight did basically enslaved an entire pony population with her ideals but it wasn't enforced at least not until the main six appeared. It was clear that she had basically charmed every pony to let their cutiemarks be removed willingly. As for Sunset she basically terrorized every human in Canterlot High, she was cruel and enjoyed causing misery to others. But the final nail was actually that she actually transformed them into brainless zombies and had no regard for life of others. She only cared about power and to obtain it. Those are the signs of a true evil person. Yet even those can be redeemed. Power corrupts they say and that was the case for Sunset. She needed to lose every bit of power and hit rock bottom to realize what she was doing.
Back to my observation, it seems to me that the show portrays that Unicorns are more prone to do evil things.

At the time anti-twilight wasn't already a done thing. Furthermore there were a lot of very good hints to Sunset Shimmer's motivations and she had more than being a mwahahaha villain, for instance the pictures, the "I'm not a monster" statement, along with "Do you know what happens when you bring an element of harmony to another world?", along with the ending bombshell of everyone being concerned about Twilight except Celestia.
Starlight glimmer gets literally an anti-motive rant removing her own stated motivation.
To date, I think Starlight Glimmer is my favorite villain. She isn't the most powerful or an Equestrian-wide threat. Yet. I can't help but imagine how far she might have gone. What makes her truly frightening in my mind is that she is the evil that lives next door (so to speak). The one that you don't know about until the cops bust down the door because they finally have evidence pointing them to the culprit.
I decided that her motivation is power and control.
I'm guessing she'll be the star of the Trio-verse Boast Busters episode
