Two and two-half barn-busting stories · 1:23am Mar 6th, 2015

A few weeks ago I posted the opening of a story I began for a write-off, and dared anyone to finish it. Three people did! Four, if you count changelings.

First was equestrian.sen's story outline, which is completing the story idea, so props for that.

Next was FanOfMostEverything with The Perfect Barnstorm.

Applejack makes an early-morning Pinkie Promise, before she's had her coffee, which leads to Apple Bloom supplying the brains and engineering for a mad Pinkie scheme. This begins with (the original) absurd premise, yet feels vaguely like something that could have been expanded into a show, with Pinkie Pie and Apple Bloom being useful to each other.

Then the changeling posted this. All this was within a few hours of my post.

Then Admiral Biscuit published True Love Never Lies.

The title is ironic, because one person in the story keeps lying to seduce the other. In the play that the video that the story was based on was based on, that is, not in the story. Just go with it. The story, I mean. Just go with it.

Pinkie lowered her head, tears welling in her eyes. “But, if I don't party, I won't be me.”
“You'll still be you. Berry Punch didn't stop being herself when she stopped drinking.”
“She turned from a slut into a bitch.”
“She was always a bitch.”

Ding!

“I'm just so lonely. Parties help me get through the day.”
Applejack picked a pear out of the fruit bowl and tossed it out the door. “When did these feelings start?”
“When Berry Punch stopped putting out.”
“Pinkie, you've got to get past that. Ponies change. Why, Ah used to be a stallion.”

If you were trying to use the comment preview within the blog post, it didn't work, I think only because those comments are on another page. (If you were trying to give those people notifications... I guess they'll have to tell us whether it worked.) (ETA: he fixed it.)

Thanks for reassuring me that I didn't miss any published fics from this. I haven't gotten around to "True Love Never Lies" yet, but that gory massacre of a sentence is enough to make me want to read it.

That story is very silly, but I liked it.

And clearly, Horizon needs to stick his short story into his short story collection or something.

I followed my usual "radio drama" method of story planning: I continued the conversation from where you let off, out loud, including an accent for Applejack. Everything followed from there. Somehow.

Glad to see I didn't disappoint.

... Admiral Biscuit's a changeling?

I hadn't even thought about that, but yeah, it would fit in Never The Final Word. I actually have a few chapters queued up for that -- I might be able to release two updates in short succession!

Crap, they're on to me.

My technique was contemplate it all day at work, come up with nothing, re-think genres while taking a shower, and then slave over the keyboard until my masterpiece was done.

Those were both enormously amusing in their own disparate ways  I was particularly fond of "The Perfect Barnstorm." Thanks!
