Ponies and Swearing · 8:46am Feb 20th, 2015
Just an observation as I look over what I have written so far of the next chapter. As time goes on, I seem to be hitting an upward trend in frequency and intensity of ponies swearing (not sanitized pony versions either, Bucking is for trees people). I considered adding a tag for language, but there isn't one. I know some people write stuff into their description for T rated stories, since the sex and gore tags only seem applicable to M stories that are straight up clop or graphic mutilation, and T covers pretty much everything short of that.
Swearing doesn't really bother me, and I assume I'm not exactly alone, but I'm wondering what the general consensus is. Does anyone find ponies dropping f-bombs jarring? Do you think such things should be noted in the description?
depending on the character, the use of the F-bomb can be very jarring, but in a good way. if the character doesn't usually use the word, then them using it at any point get's the point across that they are very emotionally worked up.
Oh, hey. I kind of remember you. How'd the thesis go?

Still in production. Waiting on some data. Though there is plenty more I SHOULD be writing anyway. Part of the reason I'm getting any fic written at all is that I'm procrastinating on that harder.

I've gotten very little fanfic writing done, because I procrastinate on it harder than I do other things!
I finished some school, learned java, learned some Android. I was productive with my life and I feel awful for it. Coffee helps though.
So, assuming you get your data and procrastinate sufficiently less, how much longer til you become a master of lakemud?
What kinds of bitches get pissy over the word "fuck", anyway?
It's a little jarring, I guess--but, at the same time, something must be used as a hard-hitting curse, when "By Celestia!" just isn't powerful enough.
I actually welcome actual swearing, as I grew tired of false swear words like 'buck'. But I know some do not share my mentality when it comes to this. So, to be on the safe side, you should probably mention in the description whether or not you are using actual swears. Though, considering what we put these ponies through, one would think it would take more than colorful language to bother anyone...

Agreed on that, though I think all of the Mane 6 would know a few things, most of them probably wouldn't swear in public for one reason or another unless they're either really hurting or really annoyed.
Actually, of the six, I think Dash is probably the most likely one to swear casually, and that's not by much. AJ and Pinkie would probably have gotten their mouths washed out with soap if they swore, Rarity sees noblemares as being defined elegance and not the type to swear, and Rarity and AJ have little sisters whose ears they wouldn't want to burn or wouldn't want to get bad habits. Fluttershy would only do it softly if at all and Twilight, while probably having the most extensive knowledge of swear words and curses, wouldn't want to say such around Spike or Celestia, Spike 'cause he's a young child and Celestia because she's Twi's teacher/second mother. It's also entirely possible that Twilight got both her and Shining's mouths washed with soap while they were under their parents' roof, or Spike dropped a curse unknowing and caused one or both of them to be punished for teaching him such language.
As long as it's warranted and not done gratuitously, I've never really had a problem with it. It's when people start using swearing as substitutes for adjectives every other word that bother me, with an exception for when is extremely warranted (see the Boondocks Saints hotel f*ck scene for a good example).
I usually have a "rated__ for __"at the bottom of my story description.

Assuming this florida lab gets their act together I plan to have it all wrapped up by the end of march.
So it seems I'm on the same page as everybody else. Swearing is no big deal as long as it's context and character appropriate.
If anyone's curious, the context of this particular upsurge of language involves Twilight and Chrysalis. Here's two mini (not directly connected) sneak peeks.
Chrysalis: "OW! FUCK! Who does that?! Who bites a w-?!"
and
Twilight: "Regarding the former, my answer remains 'go fuck yourself', which, depending on the limits of transformation mass for changeling drones, is likely entirely possible for you."
