I've had a lot of this recently, and though I've regarded it quite a few times, I just need everyone who enjoys my stories enough to follow me to know this.
Yes. I understand how maintaining a population works. Yes. I know it is unrealistic to regard a whole population as gay, especially when it's not the case for us humans. Yes. I realize that some readers do not agree with me.
But, in knowing all these things, am I going to change my headcanon and make Equestria realistic?
Of course not!
I write for myself, not others. Since I ship mostly gay ships (with the exception of the already canon heterosexual married couples because that's too cute to breakup!) then that is what I'm going to write and my Gayquestria will be as gay as I want it to be! 
I, myself, am quite obviously bi-sexual so I don't find anything wrong with heterosexuality at all! It's a great thing, just not my personal shipping preference 
Not only that, but it's fanfiction! Is lesbian technicolor ponies really something to get worked up over? 
So, it's been written, printed and stamped onto the Internet now. If you don't agree, unfollow and don't read my works. It's as simple as that!

It's good to see writers not backing down because of some hate. All you need to do is be happy with what you write and know some others may also like it. Me included. Keep on keeping on!
Eh, I'm not really into the Gayquestria thing that much. I do hardcore ship Cloud Kicker with Blossomforth though... and I do somewhat ship Rarity with Applejack (that ship sails itself, am I right?). But I don't see anything wrong with homosexual shipping though. I don't even see why some people would be against it.

There are stories I've read where literally everyone is in a gay relationship, and I'm okay with that.

It looks like it's getting that way. And that's not even when you consider other sexual preferences, like asexual, demisexual and pansexual.
Technically speaking, the optimal way for relationships to work in the situation that equestrian seems to be in (drastically lower population of males then females), most couples would be two females who would enlist the service of a male in order for them to have a child. This does not preclude males from having relationships gay or straight, it would just require a social understanding of the situation, i.e. sex for procreation is not sex for romance. This system would work pretty well, allowing for a large variance in gene pool as well as letting ponies be happy.
But on topic, why are people giving you crap for this, you aren't running an actual planet, or kingdom or whatever, there are no consequences.
There Is One Valid Point I have to say. There are more Mares than Stallions so it's possible this gay shipping between mares might be possible.
It’s always interesting to me when people get so worked up over the idea of a primarily gay/lesbian population. Gay people have been marrying heterosexually and having children that way due to rampant homophobia, sometimes at threat of exile or execution, for the vast majority of civilization’s history. If a gay man/lesbian can live in a closet their whole life (with biological children to boot!), I’m sure a lesbian couple can find a male to act as a sperm donor, and a gay couple could find a female to act as a surrogate. Many gay and lesbian couples IRL want kids already and do this, so why wouldn’t fictional characters be any different?
But I digress. Personally, I find stories where either the entire cast is gay or the entire cast is straight to both be ridiculously unrealistic. However, that doesn’t stop me from enjoying them, because that’s all down to the author’s headcanon and what ships they like.
Ignore anyone who’s giving you serious flak for it; those who do so are reading some kind of politics into something that isn’t political at all. Some people erroneously interpret a predominance of lesbian couples and homosexual reproduction as an attack on men and heterosexuals. Such people have probably been on tumblr too much and think anyone who wants to write about two mares having an adorable foal (or two stallions having an adorable foal) is a frothing SJW who wants to eliminate the Y chromosome from the gene pool. Ignore ‘em. They’re quite silly.
You don’t have to justify your subject matter to anyone. Your grammar and style, sure, pay attention to constructive criticism there, but if someone basically says, “Stop liking what I don’t like!!11!!” they don’t deserve your acknowledgement.
You’re doing good, so don’t let anyone get you down, and keep on writing!

What's funny is, I actually do ship the canon heterosexuals. Cadence and Shining can't be with anyone else, The Cakes are adorable, Fleur and Fancy were meant to be, and even the mules that Pinkie helped get together are an unstoppable force of d'aww!
I like criticism, but if you can't handle my own canon, then there's no reason to read my work!

Headcanon much? Have you ever heard of the Kinsey scale? It is a widely applied psychological test that grades people's sexuality (i. e. gayness) between 0 and 6, where 0 is strictly heterosexual and 6 is strictly homosexual. There is also the X-grade, which indicates the appliant is asexual. He's done a research with a 50,000-some people of different ages (speaking of ages, it is shown that grades change throughout life). The result?

My personal theory on pony sexuality is that the male population of Equestria is quite small (seriously, what percentage of the ponies you see in the show are male?), so relationships between mares are very common.
Maintaining the population is not a big problem when society has access to magic. There are spells to help two mares conceive.
The initial gender imbalance might have been caused by a historic event, like a war that killed many of the stallions. After that, in most societies the balance between the two genders would even out after a generation or so. However, when two mares have a foal together, the foal is always female. (There is no parent to supply a Y chromosome.) So the gender imbalance continues from one generation to the next.
Obviously this is all in-universe, headcanony stuff. The real reason is that female ponies sell better.

Everyone's already had great points! Aside from the male-to-female ratios, I've noticed that (esp younger) non-heterosexual people tend to congregate together.
I figure when people find out who you're pairing, but keep reading against their will, they're just trying to wiggle their hate into loving spaces. Since no one's getting hurt, I say laugh it off.
