Story Promotions (Round VI) · 2:48am Feb 4th, 2015
Hey guys! I'm a little late on these, but it's time for another round of story promotions! Hope you find something new to read and enjoy here!
Sonata Dusk plays in the park under the watchful eyes of Aria and Adagio.
Majin Syeekoh is an interesting writer. He seems to primarily write short one-shots, between 1K-3K in length, with a few exceptions (some of which are very good). Some of his stories are completely random and silly; others are a bit more serious. He also seems to enjoy writing about the Dazzlings. And since it seems I've fallen in tacos with Sonata, I had to check out this fic.
Without giving too much away, let me just say this... If you're going to read any fic from Majin, read this one. At a little over 1K in length, this story won't take too much of your time... reading it, that is. This story is truly deserving of its Dark tag. The effect pulled off here is subtle but terrifying in the context of Rainbow Rocks and its aftermath. You might find yourself thinking on this one for a while after you've reached the end.
I was not expecting what I found here. Not very many writers can give me chills through something that takes me less than five minutes to read. For that, this one's going on my page for a long time.
Everyone has things they aren't particularly good at, and we all work to make the best of our weaknesses. Sometimes, though, our weaknesses can prove to be tools of our undoing.
This one is a bit of an older story, but the writing is very clean and polished. Silverware is told from the first-person perspective of our protagonist, Ironclad, an Earth pony Royal Guard dating a high-society unicorn stallion, Cottonball. Ironclad's a nice enough pony: down-to-Earth, honest, loyal, and a hard worker. There's only one problem.
It's sitting on the table, mocking him when he takes his stallionfriend out on a nice date.
This story had me rolling with laughter! When you consider the logistics of an Earth pony using silverware (Earth pony magic and dexterity aside, as in this story), it gets pretty hilarious. The romance tag is definitely here for more than the setup as well, but I won't go too much into that. Let's just say you should have some insulin handy.
If you enjoy a nice rom-com, or perhaps another good M/M shipping story (we certainly need more of those on here!), give it a read.
Vinyl Scratch is well known as DJ PON-3 across Equestria. Other than their music career, however, not much is known of the pony’s personal life as they struggle with their identity, music, and coping with the effects of their actions on others.
The gender-neutral pronouns in the description are not typos. This is not an R63 fic, and there is no Record Scrape in this story—only Vinyl Scratch. Where does that leave us? Well, I really don't want to spoil too much here, but I'm sure you guys can read between the lines. Or, you know, read the story.
What I can say is that this is a fic that sets out to explore issues of identity, relationships, and self-actualization and empowerment through a popular pairing. ScratchTavia may be one of the fandom's most prominent ships, and our love for Vinyl Scratch definitely runs very deep. The author uses this to her advantage, exploring a different possibility for these characters, and Vinyl especially.
While it is incomplete (only four chapters released at this time), the writing is solid, the characterizations are excellent (the use of Derpy and Dinky was a good choice), and the pacing is steady. My only complaint is that I feel the chapters are a little short, but it's a minor (and biased!) one.
If you enjoy ScratchTavia, stories about struggling with identity, or a fresh take on a fandom favorite, check this one out!
The Legend Of Falling Rocks, Buffalo Brave
Long ago, before the ponies came to this land, the buffalo roamed free across the hills and plains, and the stampedes could run from mountain to sea without fear.
In those days, a buffalo brave, Falling Rocks, became legend. Come, listen to the tale of how he saved his people.
A story of buffalo mythology.
Styled after Native American myths, concise without being thin, and a nice little slice of world-building on its own, this story jumped out at me once I found it. Its upvote count is abysmal in contrast to the sheer amount of work the author must have put into it. Telling three complete stories in less than 3K words, along with conforming them to a very specific and recognizable style is no easy feat. However, Titanium Dragon pulled it off brilliantly.
While it is short, Falling Rocks is definitely deserving of its Adventure tag. The tales of the Buffalo brave not only follow the origins of the desert, warpaint, and Falling Rocks himself, but also touch on events within the FiM canon. More stories featuring the Buffalo are welcome, and ones that tie into what we already know about the ponies (thus weaving a more interconnected world) are even more so.
On a final note, there is a twist with this story as well, but I will leave that for the readers to find. Let's just say it's something that'll make you slap your forehead a bit when you realize it. Not many stories outside of the Comedy tag make me giggle, but this one sure did when I found that little tidbit...
If you enjoy stories about the Buffalo, Native American-styled myths, or a different perspective of Equestria, be sure to give this story a look.
Well, that's all I have for tonight, guys! Take care, and have another picture of what's slowly destroying my soul and turning it into tacos mush!
Gahhhhhhhhh! Jankrys00 is going to give me the 'beetus... It's going to happen, and I can't help but watch...
I only have one of these on my bookshelves. I need to fix this. :L

Now I just need to write some more.
Edit: Also Silverware seems like a cute fic!
The Legend Of Falling Rocks, Buffalo Brave is an amazing little story, and Ave Sonata was as well. Rocks had that originality I really like in stories, but it was told in a very Native-American-esque way that I couldn't help but love the story. Truly innovative. Ave Sonata is an amazing story that utilizes the 'dark' tag in a very interesting and what I consider to be the best way. Honestly, I hope for a continuation because . . . it's a horrifying idea, one that really digs deep. It would be a shame if you dug the hole and never built anything there.
"Ave Sonata" and "The Legend of Falling Rocks" sounds like two stories I should check out.
N-no p-p-pressure...
New promotion? Just in time. Dang, I really should make some time to watch "Rainbow Rocks". Otherwise it would be useless to read Sonata stories...
Buttersctoch Cream has always been my go-to for M/M romance fics. Just throwin' that out there. :B
I'm glad that Vinyl Scratch fic is well-written, since it's on my tracking shelf. :B I only hope people get excited when I write the same idea. Because that's something I'm going to do. Totally. I will do it. c.c Sure.
Aww, snubbed again.
Ave Sonata was definitely unsettling for what it was. Every time I ask Syeekoh what his newest story is about when he reveals it's sent off, yet he keeps his lid shut... I can't recall if he's ever told me what it was beforehand, other that it stars X or Y. And then Exposed! came out, and... yeah...
Personally, I like its short length. We get given the... mood, if you'd call it that, and it really delivers on it. It's short, yes, but it just somehow works. While it's true it can be expanded on and fit the bill for a truly darker theme, I can't help feeling it captured everything perfectly with its current status and leaves the experience better with its ending. But yes, it's one for the books.
M/M is something I should read more of. There's been a few here and there, but it's one of the areas I haven't checked out as much as others. And I really get annoyed by the M/M hatred that spurs up whenever it does appear (There's pretty much two comments reserved for those kind of remarks on every M/M clopfic). Thanks for sharing one, for I shall dive into it and welcome it with open arms.
Huh. Apparently I missed this post the other day.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed Falling Rocks; it was very interesting to write something in a totally different manner from my usual style. I really need to do that more often; a lot of my experiments with doing weird things have turned out really well.
I'll definitely take a look at Ave Sonata; a thousand word darkfic that works that well is definitely something I'm interested in.
