    March Story Madness

Hey everyone. First up sorry for the extended silence from me, work has been kicking me about and I may have bought XCOM, which I don't regret but man is it harsh on your free time. Remind me to share my pony themed team sometime  Anyway, to get back into the swing of things and to start finally fulfilling a promise to my Patreons I'm going to run a free story raffle. Usually this

Hey everyone! Great news for those of you looking for something of mine to read, one of the biggest groups on the site, Transformation, recently ran a short story contest and I was one of the entrants. Now, voting is ongoing and I'm under anonymity so I can't say which was mine, but they're all worth a look and there's a couple of real gems. Remember to vote for your favourites. :pinkiehappy:

Structure · 9:58pm Jan 28th, 2015

This blog is in reference to the Humans in Equestria Club Chapter 8: Nightmare Night

Huh, it’s been awhile since I did one of these. Ah well, best get on with it, today I want to talk about structure.

So structure is something that I’ve been wanting to write for a while, but we’re only now far enough through for me to have enough fodder to talk without giving out massive spoilers. HiEC doesn’t have a very complicated structure to be honest, I wrote it to be reasonably simple to get me out of a writing funk and into something resembling a groove, so it can be easily divided into three acts: introduction, conflict, resolution. For those wondering, we’re near the end of the conflict arc. There were also only two main plot lines, the A plot, which is the humans in Equestria and the issues with the barrier spell, and the B plot which is Chrysalis’ ongoing attempts to steal the sun. We’ve seen this this chapter that these two have finally unified into one world ending crisis, as all good plotlines should :P.

Within the arcs the structure has also been quite simple and repetitive. Things start off with a problem being solved, we hit a moment's respite and then things build back up for the cliffhanger ending. Even within arcs there's a fair amount of repetition. Odd numbered chapters tend to have things going terribly wrong, even numbered chapters are be breathers where Alex can stabilise. Chapter eight is actually the breaking point for a good few of these themes; both by putting a crisis in what’s normally a breather chapter and breaking the act structure by putting merely a crisis prelude where the finally should be.

Overcomplicated? Maybe, we’ll have to see how things shake out at the end of this thing.
