    Harmony is...

Harmony is 5AM inspiration and me SCREAMING at the side of poor Krickis' sleeping head like some kind of nerd instead of sleeping.
Harmony is feeling bad, unwanted, excluding and... support flowing out. People I've never spoken to, people I want to speak to more, people I wish I could be friends with!

Happy (Belated) Christmas, followers and fam!

I'm chugging away on Path, and the updated re-release of Tales of Fillydelphia. On writing-sprint days I've been averaging about 2-3k words.

I've also been devoting time to a brand spankin new story released just this morning. It's rather flattering to know that I have my own dedicated squad of haters and downvote-brigaders.

Fifty Headcanon Questions meme thing. · 9:59am Jan 28th, 2015

Standing at 82, I see myself as having enough interest from others to put out one of these and expect people to read it.
Without further ado, here's Pinkie's fucked up headcanon.

The Princesses:

1. How old are Celestia and Luna?

I don't really like to state a concrete source for them. They're roughly from the same time as the Battle of Three Armies, so I'll say roughly 1,800 years old.

2. How old is Cadance?

Late twenties.

3. Were Celestia and Luna always alicorns, or did they ascend?

I'll explore that later, but I state that they were furnished to the unified ponies of the newly founded Equestria by the Singers / Mothers. Until I get to it, feel free to interpret that as you will.
I do feel that like Twilight and Cadance, they had this "potential" put inside them by the Singers to guide their three favored races.

4. Are Cadance and Twilight immortal?

I feel like it, yes. Both in that they will not die naturally, and that it is so difficult to kill them as to be considered impossible.

5. Have there been other alicorns in the past?

Not alicorn as in the sense of "nigh-unkillable godlike paragons of the three races", those were created by the Singers. But "pegacorns" or other sub-variations of ponies such as "earthbound pegasi" are uncommon but extant. Pegacorns may or may not be able to use magic like both races expressed (horn + wings) or one or the other may be just for show, but they're weaker for it. Same with Earthbound pegasi- flying comes with more difficulty for their solid bones (as opposed to a normal pegasus' hollow ones) but they may have a propensity for horticulture or animal rearing (Fluttershy). Same with weakly magical / horticulture-based unicorns.

6. How much authority do Celestia and Luna have in Equestria?

Well, we've been shown that cities and towns have some autonomy, so roughly equivalent to that of the President. Sans the other branches, naturally, but one of their mothers literally invented Law, so.
They have final say in whatever the lower strata of their government come up with, but it largely runs without their direct influence. Which isn't to say that nobles don't expect to see a Princess on the throne.

7. Does Shining Armor rule The Crystal Empire along side of Cadance?

No. He's the Prince-Consort, nothing more. I feel like he'd be the head of her personal guard, and/or the head of the Empire's standing army, but sadly zero authority.

8. Other than Twilight, Luna, and Cadance, what relationships have been important to Celestia in her lifetime (students, close friends, lovers, family)?

A soldier said something touching to Oliver about Celestia. Something about her portraying the "perfect mother". She values and cherishes every pony she meets, and loves them all with the single-minded devotion of a mother. Her little ponies are all her children.
Which isn't to say she's perfect, she has Silanxi's wildness and Rhewedig's cruelty tempered and balanced by Selitos' lawful nature.
Especially close to her was Starswirl the Bearded, and Sunset Shimmer. She was crushed by Starswirl's death, but she's not overly disturbed by the passing of her ponies. She has had a long time to come to terms with the fact everyone she meets is a pale candle to her sunfire- unless they make it particularly close to her enough to be favored.

Ponies and Equestrian Culture:

9. Are there still cultural differences between earth ponies, pegasi, and unicorns, or is the culture homogeneous by the time shown in canon? Are there cultural stereotypes (positive or negative)?

Oh God yes.
There are still nations that are predominantly one race or another, and that races are unevenly distributed in cities of Equestria, there's still slight distrust at times. They remember the Battle of Three Armies, but as Equestria is largely unified there's no real organization of hatred or racism. Epithets exist, but aren't often used, and it's largely financials that make a difference between ponies.

10. Are there foods or items native to Cloudsdale that are uncommon on the ground? Are there foods or items on the ground that are uncommon in Cloudsdale?

Mostly building materials and items made from cloudstuff. There's hydroponics practiced and some experimentation with "cloud-seeding", but their largest export is weather and they import a lot of things that can't be made there.

11. Can all unicorns learn all spells, given the time and effort spent practicing them, or is magical talent usually limited in some way?

Yes. Some pick it up more quickly than others, some have a differing ability to move the Mana in their bodies, etc.
All unicorns learn (usually spontaneously) telekinesis and a light spell, and can learn more easily than other spells despite their magical talent spells falling within one particular "school" of study, or having to do with their cutie mark or special talent.

12. Earth pony magic: Does it exist? What is it?

Yes. All races have magic.
With Earth ponies, it might be a special affinity with plants, their magic enhancing yields, etc. Same with other races, it has to do with their Special Talent.
They also tend to be taller and bulkier than the other races, capable of much greater strength.

13. Some pony families we’ve seen seem to have naming conventions (the Apples, Twilight’s family) and others don’t appear to (Rarity’s family, Pinkie’s family), which is more common? Are there reasons for one or the other?

Ponies don't have surnames. Period. They have a naming convention based on their family history. Some ponies change their names when they get their cutie marks, their name translated into a different language if they immigrate, but mostly their Name shapes their destiny.

14. How much formal schooling is an average, middle class pony expected to complete?

Depending upon what their cutie mark is. Compulsory schooling ends with middle school, with most students expected to have achieved their cutie marks during that time (some even sooner), and with the blessing of their parents they may drop school in favor of pursuing a career based upon their special talent or continue schooling in order to be more well-rounded.

I'd like to note that Applejack chose the former, while Big Mac pursued the latter.

15. What’s the average lifespan for a pony? At what age is a pony expected to be independent of their parents?

Depends on the race. Shortest lived are pegasi, around 60-70 years. Unicorns come next at 70-100, with pegacorns falling somewhere between. Earth ponies are by far and large the longest lived. Granny Smith was a young mare when Ponyville was founded, hundreds of years ago. At nearly two hundred and fifty, she's still spry.

16. Are there roughly an equal number of male and female ponies?

It's roughly a 60-40 spread of female to male, allowing for a margin of error from "inbetweeners". Genders outside male or female aren't unknown, but are rare enough to be considered an oddity, with not very much known medically about the condition.

17. How informed are most ponies about things that happen in other parts of Equestria? What about other parts of the world?

I'm back and forth on the existence of the telephone. If it exists, it's probably hardlines only. Radio exists, and I'm unsure about television. But with newspapers and regular radio broadcasts, they're pretty well informed. As to either Equestria or outside it, it depends on the security level of the information, that country's relationship to Equestria, and the truthfulness of the correspondents.

The Main Characters:

18. How old are the Mane Six? Spike? The CMC?

A friend recently counted the candles on RD's birthday cake in "Pinkie Pride", and came up with 21. That's in the fourth year of the show (so four years after Twilight moved there, dig?) which means she's seventeen when it starts. Pinkie is the youngest, judging how Rainbow and Pinkie compete for least mature. Pinkie is sixteen and a half / seventeen, Dash is close to that, and Twilight is seventeen/eighteen. Fluttershy is a year older than Pinkie, so seventeen / eighteen, and Rarity and Applejack are older. I'd say starting the series in her early twenties (Rarity, she seems like she knows how to slug one back, and owns her own business) and roughly twenty (AJ, same reason).

19. Did Fluttershy remain on the ground after getting her cutie mark? Were she and Rainbow Dash friends all along, or did they drift apart for a while?

I think her fear of her parents outweighed her love of the ground. That or some enterprising pony found her.
I don't think very many ponies were ever close to Dash, or considered friends. I see her as having very few close relationships, surrounding herself with acquaintances, and I think she's slowly come to terms with having more friends as time has gone on (being gradually more supportive of Fluttershy, getting over her irritation of Pinkie and becoming her bestie, etc.)

20. Rarity and Applejack both seem to have grown up in Ponyville. What were their interactions like before the show?

I don't really see them as liking each other much before becoming Elements. They're too different.

21. What do Twilight and Spike consider their relationship to be?

Twilight seems to act like an even split between mother and older sister having to raise a younger brother. Spike seems to regard her either as a sister or a mother, depending on the writer.

22. When did Pinkie move in with the Cakes? Is she a worker who rents a room, an apprentice, or is there some other relationship?

Pinkie ran away from home shortly after gaining her cutie mark. She ended up at her grandmother's house, who understood why she left, and set her up to live with relatives- Missus Cake. They're of some relation, so it's more she lives with them and they all run the bakery.

23. Who among the Mane Six had the best parents growing up? The worst parents?

Pinkie's parents are strict to the point of abuse, and Pinkie doesn't belong in their gray world.
Twilight's mum is a Lois. Nothing Twilight or Shining has ever done has been good enough, until now. Not much yelling, but quiet "I'm disappointed in you" speeches and the like.
Rarity and Applejack are tied for best parents, obviously they were very loving and supportive, but Applejack's died when she was very young.
Fluttershy's and Rainbow Dash's are typical pegasus parents. Hooves-off, neglectful. Fluttershy never got the help she needed for trauma earlier in life, and Dash's never paid enough attention to her.

24. Why didn’t the CMC hang out more/know each other before Call of the Cutie?

Because cutie marks didn't seem important to her before that, so they were just another part of the class to her, and she didn't think she needed another friend with Twist.

25. Is Scootaloo an orphan? Will she ever be able to fly?

Yes. Her bedroom looks institutional. We've seen her (weakly, briefly) fly in Flight To The Finish, and I think it'll be shown as she gets stronger.

26. Will Apple Bloom’s cutie mark involve an apple in some way, even if it’s unrelated to farming or baking?

Probably. Ponies seem to have something of a theme naming convention. It'll probably be related to carpentry.

27. How is Sweetie Belle’s relationship with their parents different than Rarity’s was?

I don't think it's very different. I think she loves her parents deeply and they care about her even if neither can really understand the other.

Side and Background Characters:

28. Is Mr. Cake the father of the Cake twins or not?

29. Are Big Mac and Cheerilee an item, romantically?

I think so. Their behavior seemed bemusement at the CMC's antics. They're just not very public with it.

30. How did Prince Blueblood get his title?

Directly descended from Sombra and Princess Platinum.

31. Is Silver Spoon equally as bad as Diamond Tiara?

She strikes me as one of the plastics from Mean Girls. She's only following Diamond because she's the alpha bitch plastic.

32. Is Zecora’s magic common among zebras?

Yes. Zebra shamanism is something they take great pride in, their shamans roughly equivalent to old-school witches where they're the closest thing to a spiritual leader and healer that a village will see on the regular basis.

33. Why does Daring Do publish her stories as fiction?

For the same reason that superheroes have alter-egos. She likes to write, and she needs to protect her anonymity.

34. Do you have a strong headcanon for any non-speaking or one line background ponies that you want to share?

Yes. Keep an eye on Shards Of Utopia.

35. Does Equestria differentiate between speaking and non-speaking species, in terms of respect, rights and legal responsibilities? Is there some other line or scale used? (For example, how are cows classified? Diamond Dogs? A chimera?)

Speaking of cows and sheep, they're not quite intelligent enough to take care of themselves, so they exchange milk, wool, etc in return for being sheltered and taken care of by ponies.
Chickens and pigs and things are for eating. Diamond Dogs are reclusive, and chimaeras live in the Everfree Forest and are considered effing scary murderous beasts.

36. Do other speaking species form their own nations, or are all nations largely integrated, with some having larger populations of a species than others?

Depends on the species. Mules and donkeys live in Equestria. The rest live in their own countries.

37. Are minotaurs related to cows at all?

38. Do all zebras rhyme?

No. Rhyming is the effect of a mental disorder that allows a zebra shaman to talk to spirits.

39. Do zebra cutie marks work the same way as pony cutie marks?

I've never thought about it too much, but I like Bad_Seed's way of looking at it. So yeah, tattoo and shit.
Also like she said, no they're not particularly painful. Provided the area is fleshy. If it's somewhere where there's bone close to the skin, then yes, yes it does.

40. Do any species have types of magic, other than ponies and zebras?
I'd say buffalo, and I dunno.

41. Is the lack of buffalo presence in Equestria cultural, or simply because most pony towns aren’t built to accommodate a full grown buffalo?

Cultural. They're like if American/Native relations had gone more smoothly than they actually did. We're over here, and they're the fuck off elsewhere doing weird native shit.

Headcanon and You:

42. Do you consider official sources other than the show (comics, card game text, movies, novels, etc.) to be canon?

43. Do you have one head canon that you always use, or do you switch depending on projects?

I use the idea of multiverse a lot. So I suppose there's a little bit of a swinging between the two. I also believe in parallelism, the reason the Canterlot Invasion doesn't go so well is going to be more or less exactly the same across wherever I talk about it.

44. Can you easily accept the headcanons of different writers? Do you prefer when stories match your headcanon?

Depends on if it's retarded or not.

45. Is there a part of your headcanon that you wish was more popular among writers?

Well I like Spike just fine and wish more people did things with him. I wish Lightning Dust was more popular, I guess? Just so I don't steal two of Bad_Seed's answers, since my original answer is best served down below.

46. Is there a popular piece of headcanon that other writers use that you dislike?

A couple things. One, the instrument Octavia plays is a fucking contrabass. It looks nothing like a cello, and isn't played like a cello.
Two, Octavia and Vinyl would have a lot of respect for the other. I hate how "She makes Classical, she makes electronic" is the full extent of their characters. Personally I feel she'd like metal and rock and roll because of a strict upbringing and the inherent rebelliousness that comes of that. Professionally, she'd recognize that Vinyl must utilize the same mathematics and knowledge of musical theory to produce a song that she does.

Also, Pinkie isn't stupid, stop writing her like she is. She's naive but extremely intelligent.

47. Have you ever written a story or blog post just to explain some part of your head canon (other than this one)?

Nope! I hoped everyone has followed along with the cheeky cunt this long.

48. Does your head canon influence things like your favorite pony, ship, or episode?

49. Would it bother you if the show proved part of your head canon wrong? Any specific piece that would really bother you to lose?

I'll let you know when it happens.

50. Is there something that wasn't asked about here, but you feel like you need to explain to everyone?
No, it's a pretty well-rounded forty nine questions, and I'm tired of writing. :L

Well, I read it. :P And thank you for pointing out that Pinkie isn't stupid. Canon has proved any number of times that she's no such thing, yet people persist in writing her as though she were an unintelligent child.

I think the "cello" battle is lost, though, like "alicorn" before it. Word of God (Meghan McCarthy) says cello, and WoG beats everything, common sense included. My way round this is to imagine that the Equestrian term for it is "[something] cello" but that the term arose thanks to mistranslation when the instrument was first introduced from another land. Much like, in our world, "cor anglais" isn't a very sensible name.

Yeah.Well. It's not a cello. :L I will stand by the fact it's not a cello forever.
Thanks for reading my silly little headcanons.
